Cutbacks may end GM Canada's documenting service?.

Only rumor so far and it'll be a sad day if it comes true but if anyone has a Canadian delivered/built car or Vin they want documents for, it may be best to play it safe and get it done now...before it's too late?.

I've been told they have most all '77 model year and newer F-Body cars in their files too regardless of where built/shipped new..

If it doesn't make money, I can see them doing it. Only thing is these are the same people who are responsible for the documentation you need when importing a newer GM vehicle into Canada.

Someone who works at the dealer level also mentioned GM Vintage Services takes care of the keying/code systems in Canada..
Lets hope if there's any truth to thoughts of axing the Vintage documenting, the other services they do helps keep things afloat..

I don't think so. Frank and I go back to hanging out and cruising the east end togther in the early 60s. He's out of town right now, but George is taking care of business as usual. Will let you guys know if I hear otherwise.

At one time the build sheet was available for free, why would they cut the service.

I am sure that someone would purchase the business from them to continue the service.
It may not be worth while for GM to continue this service.

Once was looking at a L72 motor and the gentleman had a microfish, and on it there was 3 other COPO Camaro VIN's .

I'm sure that all of us who fortunately own Canadain ordered/sold cars would agree that this paperwpork is worth it's weight in gold.

I for one am pleased to pay for such a product. If this service left the corporate hands of General Motors of Canada, all I could hope for is that somebody picks up the records and continues. Hopefully this will never happen!

But if it does and this information falls into the wrong hands....and we all know who they are.......look out! Somebody could easily scan all the records, hunt down all the good cars or VIN's, grab them all and leave us with you know what. In a perfect world, it should stay with Frank and George at the Vintage Division. They do a super job, their knowledgable, their efficient and most of all, they are honest.

If it did come to a point where a greater cost to run the searches was incurred and had to be passed on, I would gladly pay up.

I am quite sure there are a lot of guys that cannot get Gm documentation for their cars would love too see this service from GM discontinue.It would put the US delivered and sold cars on a more level playing field. That would make things very interesting.This paperwork is worth 10 times the price charged.

I talked to Frank. As some of you guys know we go back to cruising the streets together as teenagers. The deal is that as long as there is a General Motors in Canada the service will continue, no problem. Frank and George remain ready to provide whatever you need.

Where do all these rumours start, we are not going to leave the building, they will bury us here! Frank and I have already picked our plots by reception, so no worries. We will remain in soul if not in body. We never know what the future holds, but business as usual. Keep those options coming. You folks know Frank helps put on Auto fest in Oshawa, ON each year at the end of August, start making your plans now. Sorry about the Fiero thing, I must have had too many beers that day, though it was interesting to drive, did not last long thank goodness ( no offence to the Fiero fans), you only live once and should try as many as you can. Sorry I was away a bit, it is hard following all the sites out there, and when I do get back I look everywhere for my password again! We do have access to US info in general 1977 and newer for all product except Pontiac, Pontiac Historic Services does US Pontiac info to 1986 I believe. I thought it might be good to address one point brought up by a previous poster, over the years we have had folks come up to us at car shows and say that we had the microfilm so we could track down all the good cars ourselves and buy them up. Although tempting, that is the area called credibility, many times I have seen what someone is buying and I said to myself "lucky guy", actually many many times, but we would lose all trust put in us by you folks if we tried to jump in on the sale ahead of you. Each car I document I treat as a new case, I do not in general track which ones I have done before. I do try and add a bit to each package we send out over the years, especially pictures from salesmans guides. We had to initiate a minumum research fee of $15.75 to cover wear and tear and time on the microfilm reader ( $8,000 for the machine and a $1,200 repair/cleaning bill every year), but even then I try and send out the engineering specs to give you something for your money. I try and look at each package as what would I like to receive if it was my car being done. To maintain credibility again I will not discuss someones package with another person, I will only discuss with the person who ordered the package as many people change what I put down on paper and add a line or remove one ( funny how a 307 Camaro becomes a Z/28 )heh heh heh. I will gladly speak with the person who ordered the documentation, but sometimes we get busy and if I appear rushed please understand and be patient, I do not want to snub anyone. BAck in '88, when we got the GM documentation on our COPO Chevelle, we also got the page worth of microfilm. Today they have the selling dealer and some other stuff added to the information. Back then they didn't know what many of the ZXX option codes meant and mine were left out. George is sending us a new, up to date package. People really seem to go for this stuff at shows. some things in life you try to forget.....We ran into a problem with the microfilm and GM Legal said because it contained key code info could no longer send it out in any manner. You can still get the keycodes from a GM dealer parts dept., but you must prove ownership and identity to them face to face.

US keycodes only go back about 10 years in general
