I started a thread on the Chevelle Stuff with this pic. I think we need less talk and more pics in this thread. I'll be the first.

I think there should be a whole section dedicated to Day-2. Darren would be a good guy to head it IMO. Weekly features with people posting some of the vintage parts they find and what they look like installed on their cars. We could start with the Mockingbird Deuce!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

If you were rockin' a set of vintage aftermarket wheels, commonly installed the 2nd day you owned your car- then you'd have it!

I was turned on to the term on this forum when Dave aka whitetop used it. I miss his posts. Day 2 seems to be a catch phrase for historically correct speed equipment fomr the muscle car era.

The Green Early-'70's Camaro pictured above is really one sharp machine! I just love those particular cars with L-88 hoods on them. They just really look natural on those cars. It's a shame that Chevrolet never put any kind of neat fresh-air or scooped-type hood on those 1970-74 Z/28 Camaros. One of the few Musclecars that just had a flat hood no matter what engine came in them. What a downer!

IT was badly dented when William bought the car, the dent actually severed the solder joint on the pick up. Since the inside was like new, we wanted to keep the original tank... so we used some suction cups and air pressure to massage them out a little... next up for DAY II... mid year side pipes...

The bars on the Black car have been on it since the 70's. They are Lakewood's and look very much like the Grumpy design which was featured in the Hot Rod build up of the 69 Z they did back in spring of 69.
The car also had Gabriel Hijackers in the rear and Hurst Drag Shocks in the front, a lakewood scatter shield, Edelbrock intake and M/T Valve covers when it came out of a 30 year hibernation.

The Mr.gasket shocks are dated 9D69, The Hurst shocks were in the original box NOS and dated 1970. The fly-eye is the earlier version with the snap ring. These shocks I redid with a rattle can paint and some sanding and had Dennis Cumby do the decals. The car already has a pair of vintage Gabriel air shocks in the back. To say the least he did another perfect job on them. He is the decal king. May do a set of Thrush header mufflers that I have and a vintage shackle kit. Its fun doing the stuff we did 35 years ago. Its how these cars evolved. Thanks Mike for the help. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I bought this '68 Ram Air 400 automatic Firebird with about 6K miles on it. The original owner had the car done up then fell in love with a new L71 Corvette. The engine was balanced and blueprinted and had the Royal Bobcat kit added along with headers. Trac bars, and shackles were added to give tire clearance. The rear rims were widened for big M/T tires all around. The Camaro spoiler was added and painted in the black paint scheme. The car was done before it ever went on the road. Can't get any closer to Day 1 than that. I kept the 'Bird until a certain COPO car caught my eye. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2583611050101686729SNDbca

Sam and Bill, thanks for the compliments. The car ran great for 1968. Even with the COPO car tuned and headers added, I think it would have had its hands full with the bird. It's hard to tell because automatic cars never seem as strong as a four speed one all things equal. There was a guy around with a '68 4 speed Chevelle that he had a 427 transplanted into. Beat him by about a car length. The weight difference probably made the difference. They were close. Wish I had the car back but after seeing it in September '68 the car just fell off the earth.

You need to picture frame the lace with a red pin stripe, and fuzz the edges in light gold before shooting the red lace. Maybe think about the sail panels running a tapering stripe forward along the edges of the roof too.

I have some pics of one of the super tuned fathom blue Gibb/Harrell Novas done somewhat like that only in cob webs.

Actually, finding good bulk lace is kinda hard anymore. Paisley style was the best. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Lifetime warranty on these limited edition boxes!

My experience with my old 1970's 7A box (not a 7AL) is that it works. All of the old MSD units I've had from the 70's work. There are numerous stories about the 6al boxes failing on people, and I beleive that is why they are using the lifetime warranty spin here. I think the older boxes were built better, at a time when MSD was earning its reputation.

As for the magazine blurb about sending out the old boxes...Well I think MSD as a big advertizer would not have been happy if they promoted the product in a way which would put a negative spin on the current offering.

June 05 feature.

Looks like 14" up front and 15" out back?

I've got a set of 15x6" Cragar wheels dated in late 1969 that I plan to run on my 65 Malibu SS, Plowman's 67 Nova, Eileen's 69 Camaro and Monica's 69 Nova.

You can get 7" wheels to fit out back, but it will be tight. and searching for the right offset can be a challenge. What size tire do you want to run?

I would like to run the biggest tire I can. If I remember correctly the car has 285 60 drag radials on a 8" wheel. I was thinking that a 14" wheel will made the tire look bigger b/c of the increase in sidewall. Just a thought.

PxTx
04-06-2010, 05:26 AM
Might want to start a new thread about Cragar SS wheels on a 69 Camaro. One of the most popular 8" wide Cragar SS wheels that is Camaro friendly has a 4.5" backspace.

I would only consider L60's these days, but I'm not sure what other people have done to fit that size or other radial sized on a 69 Camaro.

Things get more complicated if you want the original Cragars from back-in-the-day. Easier if you would accpet the modern offering, as they will build custom offsets. You will have to accept the different spoke shape, unilugs or modern acorn lug pockets and a center cap with dark blue and a little "R" for registered trade mark. Not as cool as the old ones, but if a big radial tire fitment is #1 priority then this is hardley a compromise.

turbojet427
04-06-2010, 06:40 AM
I don't want to run the drag radials anymore. I am thinking of M&H Racemasters or the L60s. I want a bias ply tire.

Here is my questions. When are 8" wheels justified?

I mean a 255/60/15 isn't really big enough, maybe a 275/60/15 would be. So an L60 would also justify an 8" wheel, but I don't think they are used nearly that often when people put 8" wheels on out back.

Your car looks great John. What tires sizes are you running up front and back? The wider wheel dish is cool.

Here it is with the white wheel wells and Hooker Super-Comp Fender Well headers.

Might be a slight case of the older you get the cheaper things were. This car had a 327, M21 4-speed and a 4.11 posi. Sold for much more than a grand in 1971!

NO vacuum advance needed for this distributor. All curve in by around 2,800 rpm's. Wheels are 15X6 and 15X7's. Vintage L60's in the rear. The Koni shocks are a better choice for drag racing with the adjustment but pale badly in comparison to the Dennis Cumby "Mr. Gasket" shocks I installed. Making those Thrush mufflers into header mufflers and they will probably go on the car also. The car also has an old Hurst CP shifter with a vintage white T-handle. Check out the license plate frame I acquired by twisting GTO DON's arm. Some vintage decals for the 1/4 windows to follow. Have to thank M22Mike again for his posting skills cause mine are non-existent http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

No connection to the valve cover for the fly-eye. Just a GM spark arrestor that I use as a breather. Its a perfect breather if you look in one. No need to hook a fly-eye to the vc? Those spark arrestors that people think are worth $150 and up, that they use on the X-ram Z's can be found on the 1969 chevy pickup trucks and I have found them on the one ton versions also. The traction bars are the older pre 71-72 units. Hard to find, have been looking for years.

I have been trying to find out about those bars. Through researching this, I've come accross a picture Tommy posted with what looks like NMW bars.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v284/68sschevyII/day%202%20parts/ss851576.jpg

Now I would love to see someone speculate since I can't seem to find anyone who knows for sure. What vintage are these bars? I'm in terested becasue my uncle has a set he may not be using. They also have some orange under black paint.

I wonder if the traction bars were an early design which they stopped making since Lakewood seeme to have so much of the market, or if they were made later. The catalog Tommy posted did not list the bars, and I think that was 1973.

If I am not mistaken there is now a day 2 class at the musclecar show in Chicago, am I correct? Threads like this and hopefully a dedicated section for this stuff will help in building a correct day 2 car for people who like that style of build. I learn something everytime someone posts pics and information about what they were building in the 60's, 70's and early 80's.

Very cool indeed. I'll have to figure out how to transfer/download some more of my "super 8" stuff from my time at Lions Drag Strip. Can you help me Bruce??

Joe, You can get the film transferred to CD/DVD a couple of different ways...

Here's one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bKRCD-06-M

and some others that will do it for you (reviews of good and bad)

http://www.donloper.com/product-service-reviews/costco-transfer-8mm-movie-film-dvd.html

and finally. someone that will do it for you and is fairly close to where you live

Hey Bruce, I guess I should rephrase the question. I already have the super 8 stuff on a DVD. Now the question is, how do I post it online?? Does it have to be a certain format or length?? I mean, I don't want to bore anyone, but that short clip you posted for me in my "Member's Rides" segment was from a longer video that somebody might be interested in. Thanks for your help.

These are the Eelco brand Balljoint extensions that used to be on my black 68 Nova. These along with spring rubbers in the bottom pockets really had the front end sitting high http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif. It didn't turn too good but it sure was a fun ride. The extensions are pretty worn out so I pulled them out but may install a new set some day, I really liked it set up the way it was.
