Every story has a beginning, a middle, and an end........I had hoped to start this build in the middle......Let me explain, LOL.......
After driving the 66 Nova on last years Power Tour, it became apparent that the Nova's trunk space and the "Princess's" idea of what is needed to travel for a week did not match.........so......we needed a larger trunk for future travel.......And.....after driving the street rod with the LS drivetrain, it became clear that we needed a big trunk and a LS engine to pull it around......
Finding the engine was the easy part, I ended up buying a low mile LS2 drivetrain out of a 2006 GTO (just like the 37 Ford)....."And"........I wanted to purchase the best survivor 66 Impala Convert I could find.......I basically wanted a car that would be a Rust Free original panel and paint car so I could do the drivetrain/ suspension thing and not mess with going thru the whole car frustration and expense thingy.....

So......The search began, after going thru a bunch of car sites I found a car that got my interest right away.....The car was located on Long Island New York and I contacted a member here to see if they could take a look at it for me........No problem I was told.....so ....I continued looking and found a couple more that were looked at by members here and took passes on them as they weren't what I was looking for........

As I said earlier, I wanted to start this build in the middle part of the story with a perfect car (or pretty close).........After a month of waiting on the member to look at the New York car, I kept thinking that was the car for me as the pictures and description seemed to be exactly what I wanted.........I called the owner and he assured me the car was "Perfect" as described......"NOW....This is not a Whiney Woe is me situation"......."I JUST WANT OTHERS NOT TO MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS I DID IN THE FUTURE" .......Again.......Do not "EVER" buy a car without someone looking at it..........

So.....here's where it starts.........Here's the ad and pic's

Looks good in the pic's and described as just what I am looking for............I called the owner and asked for a honest assessment as to the condition of the car and was assured it was about as perfect as they get..............I decided to roll the dice after missing out on another car the day before........Doesn't look too bad in the pic's and with the owners assurance about the condition......"I was Hooked"..............LOL.......The seller was upset with me because I didn't have it shipped in an enclosed trailer......In reality, I wire transferred the money on Friday afternoon, contracted with a transport company on Monday morning, the car was picked up Monday afternoon and delivered to my house (900miles) on Tuesday afternoon at 5pm........Everything is going so smooth I can't believe it.........LOL

Here is the car arriving............Look'in Good!!.....LOL

So.......It is what it is and I'm stuck with it.......So....Now that that's over with....I took it over to Puleras Collision Center in Kenosha (They painted the Biscayne and the 37 Ford Street Rod) and we have it scheduled to go in at the end of August to get everything corrected .....I'll get the car media blasted before going there so it will end up as nice as the Biscayne.......I ordered a Holley Oil pan for the LS swap, got a NOS right front fender, got a radio,.....so I'll get the LS drivetrain fit and installed before Body and Paint...Then we will order an Interior Kit, suspension kit, brake kit,A/C kit and wheels and tires .......Almost done.....LOL

So sorry you got stuck with that. It sounds like you ran into the typical non-car guy who has a "classic" and has no clue what a "mint excellent condition" car should actually look like.

Reminds me how my Grandfather repaired the front valance on my Grandmother's 75 Firebird back in the late 1970's after she ran into some paint cans in the garage. He was the consumate do-it-yourselfer and darn proud of it. He filled the cracks in the front valance with PlasticWood, that stuff you fill nail holes in plywood with, and then painted the repair with semi-gloss, exterior latex paint. (probably out of one of the very cans my Grandmother ran over!) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

God bless 'em. I do miss them both! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Ken,

I know my opinion wasn't requested, but having been thru a very similar situation 11 yrs ago (except that I <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">PAID</span></span> an alleged professional inspector to look at the car before I forked over the $$$ <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/mad.gif ) I can tell you your best bet is to cut your losses and peddle it <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-style: italic">now</span></span>, before you get to 'the point of no return' <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

That said...go ahead and whine...I sure as hell did.

Sorry you got hosed on this deal Ken. That sucks.

BTW, get that back seat out and check for rust in the rear floors and convertible top well area. A family member had a `66 Imp droptop and it was gonzo under the seat, but the rest of the floors looked good.

That just sucks Ken. I got boned in the very same manner a couple of years ago on a Corvette.
At least when you are done, you will know what you have and a great car with ROOOOOOMMMMM!
The very same reason I bought my 59. Let me know if there is anything I may be able to do for you. I've got a couple of friends that fool with those cars.

Bill......If I tried to get rid of it now, I would lose about 1/2 of what I paid.....So.....With that said.....I'll just put that much back into it(It's gone anyway) and get what I thought I was getting (and paid for) when I bought it.....
It's Funny now (I think), but when the car arrived I called the seller and asked him what the hell was going on with this piece of crap that he worshipped.......He said he was &quot;Shocked&quot; that I was disappointed with his baby...And it pained him to sell it....
So.....I said to him &quot;I'll tell you what&quot;......I'll pay to have it shipped back to you and you keep $1000 and return the rest......So, Basically I'm giving you a $1000 for nothing......He hung up on me.....Imagine that....Such a Deal!!

I like your attitude Ken. Admit your mistake and move on. Or FIDO. (F___ it, drive on.) Pay up and make it your own and next summer when you're on Power Tour and the LS is humming and the AC is blowing cold you'll have a laugh over it all.

Oh, and the P.O. hung up on you because he knew he made out like a bandit. He'll get his someday. Bad karma goes around and then comes around.

For those of you who have never met Ken, or seen any of his cars, let me tell you something. One year from today you'll swear he replaced THIS car with another similar one. It will be flawless, in spite of what you see today.

Ken called me Thursday evening and told me the story. Knowing Ken and how HE treats EVERYONE else, this makes you sick that HE gets this kind of deal. By the end of our conversation he was laughing, saying, &quot;I bought a brand new convertible top and they threw in a car.&quot; Can you believe it?

You're one helluva man Ken. I'm blessed to call you my friend and look forward to following another of your fantastic builds. Get busy Buddy. See ya in Monmouth.

Ken, if you ever find another one in New Jersey, I'd be happy to check it out for you. That car you got looks like it was a typical Long Island car - never a good thing due to the salt air.

Actually, that's a blessing in disguise:. That is actual evidence of his misrepresentation.

I guarantee that the felonious seller's fingerprints are all over that tape.

Remember how you asked him what condition the rear view mirror was in and he said it was in mint, original, excellent, untouched condition? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/naughty.gif

One of the major issues in installing a LS engine in a 66 &quot;B&quot; body is the oil pan, the 66 has the steering behind the crossmember and causes some major pan modifications to a stock factory rear sump pan.....The GTO pan is a front sump so it needed to be changed anyway.....So....Holley just came out with a pan that is supposed to make everything fit so I went ahead and ordered one and it showed up today.....Christmas in July...
I'll get it put on in a day or two and should be test fitting the engine into the Impala next week...Here we go!!

Took the pan down to the shop today and switched the pan and hardware..........The only problem was that the bracket that holds the pick-up tube in place was not formed correctly and there were some clearance issues with the windage tray......the instructions shown how to modify the windage tray to suit.....but.....it would have been easier for Holley to do their job correctly and just form the bracket with a tighter radius so it would clear.....anyhow we cut and welded the bracket to suit........much easier.....just a minor glitch....after that it was a 5 minute job.....I also picked up a NOS &quot;Made In America&quot; original GM fender.....I almost don't want to put it on the car it's so nice.....Thanks to Jon Krogh

The a/c syatem showed up today also.....a sure fit system for Classic Auto Air.....when I called the other day to order it....I asked if I could get a serpentine pulley on the compressor.....the sales guy why I wanted that type of pulley rather that the stock &quot;V&quot; belt....I explained that I was putting in a LS2 from a 06 GTO and I knew I was going to have to play with compressor positioning to make it fit as I knew there were clearance issues and in the end I would be using the serpentine belt....He then asked why I just didn't buy their kit to move the compressor up out of the way and it included brackets, Idler Pulley and a belt that was designed for the GTO set-up.....I said really.....so....I bought it all and my job is getting easier again as I won't have to re-invent the wheel again....So, now the compressor is driven off the main drive belt (stock, it had a seperate belt)

Spoke too soon yesterday......After getting the engine in place yesterday I only got one bolt thru the motor mount, the other one wouldn't go in......at that point I had had enough, but after coming in and looking at this picture, I noticed that the engine was tipped to one side slightly........I thought I would just have to influence the engine slightly to get the bolt in.....so , today I get the car up on the lift so I can figure out the trans mount.......After getting the trans jacked up and in position, I went to get the second motor mount bolt in.......Darn!!....the engine is sitting on the Oil Pan and not letting the mount come down for the bolt to go thru......Time to re-invent the wheel.......So......I'm gonna have to make some new adaptor plates to move the engine up about a 1/2&quot;.......I knew this was going too easy..........But!!!.....It's all part of the process......

Update.....after measuring everything,I had to modify the trans crossmember to move the mounting pad back 2 1/4 &quot;.....So....How to keep everything else in shape and position on a bent up piece of tubing.......Heres how we did it...If you notice the flame cut ends from the factory.....Converts had a boxed frame so they obviously had to narrow them to fit the narrower frame width......Factory??????

Starting point.......

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03607.jpg

Found some steel in the shop that fit the trans mount pad perfectlly and it raised the end frame mount surfaces off the table, found some steel that fit under the frame mounts and some little gusset pieces to support the mount midway.....now the mounting pad was flat on the spacer, we welded the crossmember to the welding table.......this also kept the mount angle relatve to the frame mounting....

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03611.jpg

Got out the sawsall and cut the mount section out......

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03612.jpg

Using the spacer block under the mount pad.....I measured the 2 1/4&quot; and made some side plates to suit and welded everything back together...

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03615.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03616.jpg

Took it home to test fit and found out I needed to add a little more clearance (If I was smart I would have brought the mount to the shop instead of leaving it in the garage....Duhhh!!!)

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03629.jpg

Put it in place and the mounting bolts dropped right in.......Lucky!!!

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03633.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03634.jpg

Next I'm going to remake the store bought engine/mount plates to raise the engine 5/8&quot; to clear the front frame crossmember....tomorrows project....

The Holley engine/trans pans sit pretty good in the car.......

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC03638.jpg

Before Holley came out with this pan, some of the earlier pans used hung down well below the crossmember......

I needed to raise the Engine about 5/8&quot; to get the Pan off the Crossmember.....Rather than mess around with Frame mounts and Motor mounts, I decided to make new motor mount adaptor plates......because the mounts are on an angle and I wanted to raise the engine, I had to figure out how much to move the rubber mount holes and how much thicker to make the plate to get everything to fall into place.....here are some pic's

Store bought plate in black......you can see how the 3 rubber mount holes are moved down and the plate is also thicker

Dropped off the loose sheetmetal at Puleras last week....It looks like it will be a couple of weeks before they will be ready for the body as they are slammed with repair jobs....so I continued with the dis-assembly.....took all the windshield trim off and everything is in great shape in the windshield area...so..as long as I have to wait a couple of weeks, I'm gonna put the engine back in and get the exhaust system made and I'm going to hook up the 4L65E trans to the stock column shift linkage.......so, I can make up a shift arm for the trans....Compared to the 37 Ford build....this is simple.....things just go together...(so far).....here are some pic's from today....

I also took the fenders (old and new) down to the shop today...... the NOS fender and the new old fender needed some trim holes put in.......Trying to figure out how to position them correctly from the Factory Assembly manual is quite the project.......I'm sure it makes sense to someone....LOL....Heres the page from the manual with the Dim's.....

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04214.jpg

So............How to do this and get all the seperate letters to be in the right place.......I took the old fender and measured where the first and last holes were relative to the crease and door side opening......

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04202.jpg

And.....Since I was going to trash the fenders anyway.....I got the Plasma Cutter out.....and got down to bare metal.......The layers of paint were just like reading tree rings

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04203.jpg

Cut the pattern out of the old fender.....

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04204.jpg

Measured and drilled one of the holes in the new fender.....It just so happened that the holes size allowed me to screw in a 8-32 screw.....tighten up the one screw.....positioned the other hole, drilled it thru and added the second screw......now I had a drill jig for drilling the other holes in position and to the correct size

They were built to rust. They used a sponge type foam sealer between the quarter and outer wheelhouse. It soaked up water like a sponge and accelerated the corrosion process. Roger

I'm waiting to get the car into the Body Shop right now.....kinda in that limbo mode where not much is happening.....But....The car was undercoated since new but the drivers foot pan had some rust from the inside, it didn't go thru but it thinned out the metal.......so, I did the Rust removal thing from the inside but I didn't want to leave it the way it was......so.....I pieced out a replacement floor pan section and welded it in over the existing floor.....I painted and prepped between the two pieces and tacked it in......then I sprayed a can of Boeshield around and in between the seams......then I put seam sealer along the seam and painted the patch.......I didn't want to cut out the panel as it wasn't really that bad....just thin, and since the floor pan had the undercoating from new......I didn't want to deal with that mess
of making it match........Remember.......this is a &quot;Driver&quot;...and it will be lowered....so when I'm finished it's gonna get Dirty underneath......&quot;And&quot;.....Stay that way......LOL

Ken, Let me start out (Again) by saying your work is Great! I was browsing LS1tech and came across your previous build and the car is Awesome! Then it was linked to this build, (took me 3 nights of reading for both!!) which you are yet again doing great work!

I am sorry about the car not being as advertised, but i also commend you on how you handled it! As car guys its easy to get our &quot; One Track Mind&quot; stuck on whatever we are trying to accomplish! But you stayed on tracgk for your goals and didnt dwell on it! And yes Karma is a BITCH! As long as you learned from the experience it isnt a loss!

I am working on my own project My Project Link (http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversions-hybrids/1391940-my-history-building-my-ls44.html)
definatly not on your level, i am slowly acquiring the tools to get to that point! There were certain things I didnt do because of cost to have it machined, I have been researching lathes, mills etc for the garage.

I saw your disapointment with the brake line flaring tool you had in your previous post, I have this one, honestly they look better than factory, and will do the male side of the GM quick connect, so you could do hard lines without an adapter! And you can add AN flare dies to it! Mine is Bluepoint, but is just mastercool rebadged!

Since you changed the bodybushings it's a question of definition, I'd say you have had the body off of the frame. Maybe not all bolts were off at the same time but the body has been separated from the frame IMHO.

Stopped by the body shop today to see when they would be ready for me to bring the body there.....They are still busy but maybe towards the end of next week........I have plenty of time so it's not a big deal.......I ordered up the 4 wheel Brake system yesterday.......gonna order the suspension upgrades next week.....and I making a list of all the other &quot;Stuff&quot; I'm gonna need....Interior Kit, Weather Seal Kit...Bumpers should be coming back soon from the Plater...Dash Pad is finished and on it's way from Just Dashes.....They just had a couple of parts at the body shop prepped.......

Some of the purchased parts are starting to show up.......After doing the LS Swap in the 37 Ford, I was very happy with the way the Fuel system worked out....I used the GTO fuel pump/sender assy..........the GTO set-up does not required a Pressure regulated return line as it is a self-contained unit.......So.....
The new fuel tank showed up today and I brought a Fuel pump down to figure it out..........

New Tank

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04774.jpg

Tank and GTO Pump assy.........LOL

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04779.jpg

Hummmm!!!!! Now I just need the Pump assy to fit....I don't need the float arm function as I will be using the stock Impala Fuel Gauge sender.....So.....We need to get it as compact as possible......

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04784.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Impala%20Convert/DSC04785.jpg

I am just going use the original top of the pump to seal to the yet to be fabricated flange that will be welded into the tank and for the internal pump harness plug to connect to the external harness....All the existing GTO gas tank venting will be removed and sealed off .......It seems that everything will fit with a small sump area added to the bottom of the tank.......Ahh!!!.......The Fun starts

Before and after.........

Yeah!!........This car will be a Breeze to put together compared to the push to get the 37 finished.......The unknown will be how many of the repro parts will not fit, but......I've been buying all the original GM parts I can find for the car off the internet.......And......The car should be at Pulera's in 2 weeks........I hope!!.....

Tricity did the rear bumpers on both my T/A and the Charger. Great work and delivered exactly when they said it would be here. They are usually selling at Carlisle and they allow you to drop off your bumpers there, and save the shipping hassle of getting it to them. Usually a six week turnaround when they dont already have a core.
