View Full Version : Tyler's 1971 Chevelle Restoration

Well ever wonder where things went wrong? I do not know if you have experienced this? Both my boys started college only to change tracks 180 degrees in their 2nd year. This time my son decided he did not want to continue with a computer information security career. Instead he wants to restore cars for a living!

To that end he is attending the local community college and taking automobile mechanics classes. But because he has heard me say many times that just any old body shop is not cut out to properly restore muscle cars, he decided he needs to restore a car to get first hand knowledge how to do it.

His instructor had this 1971 Chevelle that he would sell him. He at least asked me to go look at it with him. The way he talked the car would practically restore itself.

If it was me I would have passed on the car. If this was going to be his dream car, I would have advised him to pass.

Being the mean and cruel parent that I have always told him I was, I would let him decide. The car was a project car and I told him it would be his decision. (read, he needs to make his own mistakes in order to learn them.)

If he wants to learn how to do this, how else to learn. Besides the more he needed to fix the more he would learn, right?

To be honest, having the younger crowd getting into these cars it a good thing. So maybe things are really going right after all.

As Tyler is not into posting on forums, I though we would share his journey.

Now the bad:

Supposedly some body shop tried to install three piece trunk pan. Tyler attempted to get in the trunk to clean out some parts and the floor oil can'd on him. No wonder, there were no braces underneath. His first priority is to cut this out to see what is salvageable.

From my perspective, experience is the best teacher, no mater what you are doing.

What does he want the end result to look like? Restore to original, modified, or something different??

Have Tyler call me any time if this is what he wants to do. I would be happy to talk to him as this is what I have been doing all my life and I too went to Vocational School to learn how.

Restoring cars full time (no insurance work or late models) is purely a labor of love and you will not get rich by any means as long as you are an honest person and don't build junk. However, I love what I do and can work as little or as much as I want and the rewards are very hard to surpass. Every customer I have is now a close personal friend and that is hard to say in many other businesses.

We definitely need to have some younger people in this hobby so it would be nice to see Tyler do what he loves to do as long as he knows the whole story. My parents always told me I would not make a lot of money doing this and they were right. On the other hand, the only people that are happy with their jobs are those that love doing what they do. It is not always about the money.

He is targeting a cool ride. Something to sell at a reasonable price when done. His budget is tight, so no LS6 clone or other expensive restoration.

We have talked about this. To learn how to do the high dollar restorations the basics must be top notch. i.e Sheet metal has to be done right. Paint has to be good.

Bolt on parts do not need to be original for this one.

I told him do not even think past the sheet metal work, suspension and paint. But to keep an eye out for deals on the missing parts interior parts. maybe a 12 bolt if real cheap.

Once the body is in paint the it will be joy to put back together.

Rick,

Thanks I will let him know. He has heard the same thing from me about not getting rich.

When we were talking about the shops and people out there, yours was one on the list. He did ask if I could find him a shop to apprentice in. I told him first get school done and we would talk.

One great thing is, he now knows firsthand how to NOT install a trunk pan. haha.

Great to see him getting started on this. Hope he sticks with it and enjoys what he does.

I completely agree with SS427. The resto business is a labor of love, not fortune. People do not understand how much time we suck up in the shop just to make the results worthy of being considered a quality representation of ourselves. I've spent many nights in the shop working for nothing but my reputation. This 72 reminds me of my first car. I look back now and say, "boy did I pay too much for a car I should have not restored"! Definatley good practice before he touches that Nova!!!

If that trunk pan was installed by a body shop, they should choose a different career.

If my labor wasn't practically free when I was a teenager I wasn't working hard enough...
The only way to learn how to get out of a jam is to get yourself in one, besides he needs to get a few yard restos under his belt before he starts on what ever he REALLY wants to build in 10-15 years when he learns what not to do because he has cost himself twice the money and 5 fold in labor doing it the "wrong" way.

Not much of the drop off left

Well, Weathers has been bad. But here is a query:

This came with the car but is too small for the back seat.

Can anyone identify this lower rear seat?

When I googled 3520616 I came up with a Mopar??????

Possibly a 1971 Challenger/Barracuda as the seat tag has 1751 which according to the links, that would be 175th day of 1971.

Hello,

Well between Tyler's School, new job, and the holidays he did have not much time for the Chevelle. He called and said he had a three day week end and was going to make some progress.

Here is the start:

Trying to see how many coats of paint we on the car.

Look like several!

Yep, I am just a bit taller.... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

We were talking while the dismantling was going on.

The engine in it is a later year 305. (GM SG 1 5.0 LG 16093627) in unknown condition with a Edelbrock intake and carb. But looks to never have been fully hooked up.

He wants to put a 400 in it with TH400. When he said this I was thinking SB 400 (Block castings 3951511 or 3951509). But checking the CBTN, it looks like the 1971 400 was the LS3 402 / 300 hp '854 block with '820 heads.

While the body and technical bits will be done right (maybe with a few unobtrusive mods like power windows) I have been steering him away from a BB due to the cost.

Which engine would be easier and less expensive, knowing that much of the current engine may not be salvageable?

He wants a cool ride that has some resale value. To build either to stock specs might get too costly to re-coop.

Thought's anyone?

Greg

You could probably get by with the 305. Maybe it needs to be gone over but that engine will perform OK for what you guys want to do. How about a stock 350 from that era? May find something local, Ebay or Craigslist in your area. Keep up the good work.

Well i have $200 holding on a 350 with alum heads ready to drop and go for $500, so question is if i should buy that one for it for now but first i want to know if the 305 can crank over but id love to either do a LS for it or a L78 that's the ideal for me but if i did the L78 i think it be better with a 12 bolt rear ( i got a 10 ) Any thoughts?

And then things ground to a halt. The 86 Blazer you see in the background above is Tyler's daily driver. At the auto parts store picking up a few parts Tyler hears some posi chatter on the rear while backing up. Then a loud pop.

I ask him to drive the car in a turn in the street in front of the house. Sure enough it looks like the posi was binding. Typical fix is to replace the oil and add some limited slip additive. Then drive figure eights.

Since Tyler needs 10 hours working cars every week for school and he has not had much experience on axles I figure he can handle this.

He pops the axle cover and sees this:

Tyler, Picking pieces of metal out of the housing.

http://chevynova.org/hidden/Tyler%27s_1971/DSCN4621.JPG

Lots of shiny metal fragments. Not good <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/mad.gif

These axles have the gov lock type posi. Hard to rebuild and notorious for grenading for no reason. The fact that the Blazer has 260,000 on it and this just happened is a good thing. Next step is an after market Eaton Posi unit.

This will delay some of the Chevelle work and dig into the budget. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/cry.gif

Tomorrow promises to be a nice day so expect there to be time for both the Blazer and the Chevelle.

More later,
Greg

Dang, Greg, that sucks. I'm sure this will be a good learning point for Tyler....and he'll have a good story to tell.

It was one of those moments where you just turn it on and start driving then it happens and your stuck with it. But on bright side I was able to soda blast a bit of the chevelle, don't worry pics will be up soon and you can see all the different colors as we took the layers off.

Today was a nice day, Tyler just got started late. First up was to take everything off and drop that axle on the blazer.

I little PB Buster and wire wheel on the die grinder to clean up the rust and gunk from the threads. Everything when well until the nuts holding the springs to the axle. Did not have a deep well the right size.

Good excuse to get more done on the Chevelle. Pull the B&M Shifter and the EEC box.

I was messing with a Nova axle while Tyler continued on the Chevelle.

This almost looks like Nu Yawk work. Notice the sheet metal screws and washers for shims.

Time to start on the front end.

Time to have fun. I had been using the soda blaster and let Tyler give it a try on the Chevelle.
