Around what time period did the ubiquitous Chevy Rally wheel start showing up on pre-'67 GM cars? Did people latch on to these immediately in the late-60s, or was this more of a '70s-80s thing?

In my time period we would buy the rally's from the guys that sold them to go to the Cragar or other aftermarket wheel. I had the XT's on my nova and could not wait to get rid of them so I bought my cousins rally wheels from his 69 SS nova when he put his Cragars on. They were the cheaper alternative back then. When we got the money to jack the car up and do some suspension mods we ditched them for deep dish Cragars for the rear and 15X6 up front. Time frame for "me" was about 1970 up.

I personally noticed rally's being used on modified cars again starting in the late 80's and 90's.
In my area in the 1970's the stock rally's was the first thing you ditched.

I remember some guys would use them on prostreet cars back in the 80's and widen the out to 15x12 etc....hideous..

Rallys should only on be on stock muscle cars IMO.Rallys were popular on pre 1949 street rods in the 1970's though...the cb radio, shag carpet and cowboy hat days...

I agree for the most part when Rally wheels are used with caps and rings which I have almost never liked. Rally wheels without the caps and rings with the right tires and detailed axle in back and the grease cap on the front really look good and have a "all business" look. I ran 15x7's and 15x6 rally's on a 72 Nova and it looked like it was ready to race just sitting in the driveway. This 68 Nova has 15x6 in the rear and 15x5 up front. Other than the cowl hood and the caltracs this nova is set up really nice and the Rally's accent the look. This Nova was originally a 6 cylinder car. Also, no rally ever looks good in body color unless it is black. I have seen a few white rally wheels that were ok but Argent is really the only way to go and that means no rusty scratches from the caps and rings coming off..

That is/ was my car. I sold it a few years ago. Built it from a 18k mile 6 banger. 80's open chamber LS6 crate motor 4spd.
Before I sold it I changed the look. Put some slapper bars on and redlines. Put 077 heads on it.
I have a '68 L78 BY Camaro now.

I drooled over the look of your Nova years ago! Loved that car and story.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that in between the rallys and the steelies I had a pair of 15x4 Cragar S/S's with 7.75 redlines up front. Out back I had black 15x8 rallys that I had made for the correct backspacing to fit 9 inch slicks. No pics of that combo around right now though. Like an idiot I sold those wheels and tires which would look nice on the Camaro and they would fit great too.

I posted on other sites about that car years ago hoping to find the owner and find out more about the car. Nice to hear from you Sir! I pulled that out of the magazine for framing! It's been one of my favorites for a long time. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif
