"Four speed" ask me to post some pictures of my Vega project. Even though I'm doing some repop Motion parts, I'll call it a Day 2 build.

Engine is a BBC with GM production aluminum heads. Trans is a T-101 with a mag. case, Hone-O-Drive and 12 bolt.

Thank you. Yes, it's all metal. I had the car shipped to me from San Jose. There was a couple of small areas around the windshield and an area under the right side glass.
I figured out a long time ago that it's better to pay out the nose for grandmas car than it is to fix rust.

This looks a lot like the RR I have in my 65. I think it is the earliest design. I noticed the Tee for the up and down gate is silver. Was the an improvment you made to a metal handle?

My RR has a Hurst Tee with the word Hurst in a sparkle sticker. I took it off and stashed it away. Did this one have something similar on it originally?

The shifter in that picture is not mine. I used it for reference to show how I will trim the boot for my shifter. The shifter I'm using is shown on page one with the tunnel modification. It has the flat reverse lever. My shifter will use the black T for the lift gate.

What do you envision it looking like at the end? Non-tubbed but a little extra tire tucked in or old-school tires sticking out from the fenders? Colors?

Nice work so far.

Thanks guys. I'm 99% sure the car will go orange, but can't decide on shade. Everyone keeps saying Hugger orange, but I'm thinking the factory orange for that year. What do you guys think?
Car will not be tubbed. Wheels and tires will be Cragar S/S and Pro Tracs. This is a picture of my friend Todds car. His is just about finished. We are going to try to bring both cars out at the same time, his with a small block, mine with the big block.

Does anyone on this site have a picture of the Motion dual pumps mounted on a car?
I have two Walbro / Dupree pumps and I plan on fabbing the tube pieces that will make both units into one. However, I have never seen one mounted on a car. I may need to post this question under Baldwin Motion.

I would go with a a factory Vega color. The Lime green color on Vega's or factory silver would look nice accented with a Motion stripe of some sort

I've struggled with the Motion stripe. Looks good on the hatchbacks, but I can't figure out how to transition onto the back of the car and have it look right. I've not ruled out panel paint with metal flake.

You've got some nice stuff there Tracy. I've spoken to the Walboro engineer who was in charge of the duplex and triplex pumps. He did warn me that the rubber in them will not hold up to today's fuel and that rebuild kits are getting hard to find.

On the upside, it only seems to be the rubber bellows that fails and I did hear some talk at the MCACN show that somone may be producing an modern fuel friendly bellows.

The ignition parts are spot one and beautiful.

The cool can might be worth making a bypass, as they are a great place to develop vapor lock on a street driven car. I don't know how well a V8 Vega gets all that heat out of the engine bay. You can then have it for show, and with a switch of the valves, you can actually get the gains at the strip.

The Grant box is certainly the one I would go with. I've seen it on some older Corvette's and I beleive either would be correct, neither being more correct than the other.

Ignition wires are probably the lowest priority for me, and the ones you have look great.

I just went back and looked at your pics again and noticed you started with a GT. I would put all the GT emblems/bottom moldings back on it, paint the bottom black etc and use a stock Vega Paint with the stock GT stripe on the hood and trunk.

Vega GT's look so clean. Plus I kinda like the idea of this is how Joel would have done either a new car or a used car conversion at this time and since the car would have been new(er) he probably would have kept the stock paint

I also like the panel paint idea but looks like you are trying to be period correct to a certain strict era, If this is the case I would use pearls and candies with ribbons stripes and scroll work etc. Metalflake was pretty much dead by the time this car would have been built..but hey my Mustang was flaked in 1974 but it was not the norm (and the original builder was mad at the painter). 1973-1976 WAS the era of pearls and candies and that is how I am going to redo my car.Plus flake is so bellybutton anymore.

I have some good pics I will post in the next few days.

Again please do what you like but this is how I look at it.

That's another thing I was worried about. I may use a modern electric pump, hidden under the car, and mount the bellows pumps inside the car for looks. Either run dummy hoses to them or gut them and have fuel flow through.
The cool can will be mounted where the battery tray was, I've mounted new style plastic ones on customers street cars with no problems. But...you are right, we are talking about a big block Vega. So we will see.
Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input. I see what you are saying on the paint. I'm trying to make the car look to be from the early to mid-seventies era. I guess I'm still learning about some of this stuff. The hillbillies were still doing metal flake into the late seventies here. So I guess they were behind the times like everything else..lol
But anything goes now.

I had a couple of V8 Vegas, both panels, but have almost no photos of them. The second one I built as if GM would have built it, with a mild small block, TH350, and a Monza Posi rear end. I swapped in a complete GT dash and harness, 79 Z28 buckets, and used the GT wheels with the biggest tires I could fit.
These are the only photos I have, when it was partially finished. This was about 1986, and I was doing the Malibu at the same time.

It was a locksmiths car, only 40,000 miles on it. I remember the company too, Chubb, Mosler and Taylor. The fenders were rotten, the engine burned 2 quarts of oil on the way home, but it was solid apart from that. Wish I still had it!

I grafted 1 3/4" chromoly tubing from the rear subframe to the front. (I use the term subframe loosely..lol)
You can see some pictures of them on page one. The rear floor is sliced and the rear portion of the bar passes up into it.
I don't believe Motion did anything at all to their cars. I have never saw a picture of even a subframe connector being added.
Keep in mind, I'm building this car to pretty much appear as it would have back in the day. If I was going to lean on it with slicks while side stepping the clutch, I would have done a ton of chassis bracing to the car. Cage, welding all structure panel seams solid, etc.
The front end is going to be kept stock with the exception of heavier springs and the S-10 spindle / brake conversion.

If you think you are going to stop this thing,70% of the cars weight on the front brakes do so. I think if anybody can do it,I THINK YOU CAN. Keep us in the loop,I love it. *Paul

Got the bottom of the car and engine compartment done today. I used the factory colored, PPG primer on the bottom and a PPG black on the engine compartment. Followed up with a satin clear on top and bottom. Black is spot on shade and the clear on the bottom will offer protection from oil staining, etc.
Hope to have the car finished up and painted by the end of Feb.
I'm so happy with the way this project is turning out. It is going to be light years ahead of my Chevelle.

I know where a Vega wagon sits that has a 327, dual quad engine in it. The owner street raced it in the 70's and lost his license for awhile because of this car. Over the years I heard all sorts of stories related to this car, which I took with a grain of salt. Last summer I spoke with this guys B-I-L and he, unsolicited, told me some of the same stories. There must be some truth to how fast this car was BITD. I want to buy the car but the owner is reluctant to dig it out and sell it. I'm sure it's a time capsule of old speed parts. Maybe someday...

Keep the lines of communication open with the owner. I would make the occasional visit and not even bring the car up. If the guy gets to feeling good about who you are, chances are he will come off the car. Good luck.

I'm good friends with the owner, known him for years. I know he could use the money too. I remember seeing the car in his driveway when I was a kid. It's so buried in his garage now that it literally can't be seen. the last time I did see it, he had it full of bags of aluminum cans with a stick holding up the tailgate. It's been off the road since the late 70's I think.

Even if he won't sell it, it would be great to dig it out and get some pictures.
A Vega wagon that sounds much like the one you describe got me going back in the mid-80's. A friend and I were 14 and used to walk over to the Autozone parking lot that was out in town. Two Vegas came out one night. One a hatchback and the other a wagon. It was panel painted, tunnel ram small block, diamond tuck interior. Slots, 50 series tires with the quarters radiused.
I can still remember the way I felt when he fired that thing up and saw the header mufflers bouncing around and watching it burn the tires for what seemed like 100's of feet.

I would love to get some pictures, unfortunately this thing is DEEP in the mess that is his garage. The guy is a scrapper. It would take me a week just to get the area in front of the garage door cleared. Then another week to get to the car. I would like to make him an offer on the car, with cash in hand but I don't know exactly what shape the car is in these days. When I last saw it the thing looked solid.
I remember him saying it has 5 something gears in the back too...
I'm going to seriously work on getting this thing out this summer.

Early in this thread I said I was going to use GM production aluminum heads. I didn't want to give any details about what I had until I was sure of what they were and if they could be used.
The heads were done back in the 70's by the cyl. head man himself, Lee Shepherd. A friend of mine had done some trading for them a few years ago and had brought them by the shop for me to look at. I suspected what they might be and made a trade on them.
After contacting Reher and Morrison, it was confirmed that Lee had a stamp that he used on the cyl. heads he built and this was indeed a pair of his.
Bobby Myers at Performance Automotive rebuilt the heads and gave them a clean bill of health. He said the work on the ports and chambers was cutting edge, pro stock stuff back in the day.

Hemicolt
03-31-2012, 12:29 AM
When you cut the first two coats and then apply two more, cut then buff, it adds way more depth to the color. Applying four coats at one time and cutting and buffing is no different than doing two as far as depth is concerned.

Plowman
03-31-2012, 08:55 PM
Talking about time and material,it sounds like to me,four coats of clear, cut then buffing, leaves more coats of clear on the car. Adding more depth to the color by more clear on the car. But I understand if you can't explain your answer on a key board. *Paul*

I actually kind of like it, I just would not have done the sun visor`s.

Needs a split bumper too.

Yeah. I think the door panels are a little much also. But maybe they would look better with less padding behind them.
I'm thinking of maybe doing my interior in diamond tuck, but don't know if that many "diamonds" would look right.

There is an urban legend floating around about a train derailment that had one of those cars full of Vegas. Story goes at the spot of the derailment, they dug a hole and buried all the damaged cars.

Yep.........RPO VK5...aka the "Vert-a-pact" option.
Here are more pictures, designed by GM & Southern Pacific R/R.
http://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2010/12/trains-delivering-cars-in-early-70s.html

In short,it added parts to the cars so they could be shipped,by rail, packed vertically to save space.
The vert-a-pac rail cars required that the cars be able to be driven on and driven off with no mechanical work needed. This drive-on/drive-off requirement was difficult to meet because all liquids had to be aboard,so the VK5 RPO was created.

Modifications included:
- a baffle in the oil pan to prevent flooding the forward cylinders with oil.
- off-center filler caps on the battery.
- a plug in the fuel tank vent line.
- an overflow hose from the float bowl to the charcoal canister.
- tilting the windshield washer bottle 45 degrees.
- plastic spacers between the splash pans and the engine to reinforce the motor mounts.

The Vega was designed to be shipped vertically, nose down. Special rail cars known as Vert-A-Pac cars held 30 Vegas versus 18 in normal tri-level autoracks. Each Vega was fitted with four removable, cast-steel sockets inserted into the undercarriage.

Chevrolet conducted vibration and low-speed crash tests to make sure nose-down Vegas wouldn't shift or be damaged in railcar collisions. Chevrolet's goal was to deliver Vegas topped with fluids and ready to drive to the dealership. To do this Vega engineers had to design a special engine oil baffle to prevent oil from entering the No. 1 cylinder, batteries had filler caps located high up on the rear edge of the case to prevent acid spilling, the carburetor float bowl had a special tube that drained gasoline into the vapor canister during shipment, and the windshield washer bottle stood at a 45 degree angle. Plastic spacers were wedged in beside the powertrain to prevent damage to engine and transmission mounts.
The wedges were removed when cars were unloaded.

Great historical info. Impressive efficiency on GMs part. Nearly a 70% improvement in number of Vegas moved on a single car!

It would be interesting to see if cost of RPO VK5 was off set by reduced transportation costs of moving Vegas to dealers. The customer would have the option to store his Vega in his garage in an upright position to make room for other cars/stuff!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/laugh.gif

Got the suspension and various body bolts back from oxide coating. They look great.
Everything on the pedal assembly is oxide coated while the handle and attaching housing on the e-brake are painted black and semi flat cleared. The rest of the assembly is oxide coated.

If you look at the Marty Schorr book on building the big block Vega, those are the same designed headers in the car.
I guess I could ask him to have them verified, but then I couldn't afford to pay for them...lol
Now there is a new idea....Have a company that verifies Day 2 parts...lol

I'll do that. For a small fee of course. 4% of the "agreed upon" value of the part. I'll even send a certificate of authenticity!
