I was lucky to see 2 of these rare Chevelles within 4 days apart, virtually the exact same cars, minus the vinyl top.

Pics....

Forest Green with Green Vinyl Top and Saddle Interior, 4 speed.

Beautiful cars with a 'love it or hate it' color combination. I kind of like them as you don't see them everyday in that combination.

Two super nice rides. Saw Mr. Orrs in person at CB. You gotta love the 70 L78's.

Micheal, Tupelo,MS has one of the even rarer 395 Automatics.

This car is ultimate "Sleeper". Gold, no stripes, no cowl induction. Bench, shift on the colum.
He's going to break it out one of these days. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Just curious. Where did you get a break down of 4-speeds vs. automatics?

06-15-2012, 09:57 PM
I think he meant to say "396" and not 395, so it wasn't a suggestion that 395 L78s were automatics.

Daniel Carrs 1968-1972 Chevrolet A Body Production Totals.

Chevelle Coupe

This may be incorrect. Just working off of his numbers.

That's just a guesstimate by Dan Carr, and not actual.
Extrapolation does not work when talking about actual optioned vehicles produced. There are just too many variables to consider.
They made 2144 1970 L-78 coupe & cvt. Chevelles & Elcaminos,and that does NOT include the 18 w/Al.head L-89 option.
Although the ratio for Auto. vs. M/T is low,no one knows for certain.

Rick,

Can u provide some of the options, back story, types of docs, etc on this/these cars? If I recall, wasn't there an A. Gold one at MCACN a couple of yrs ago?

SS427
06-17-2012, 01:26 PM
The Gold was at last years LS6 display and is owned by Brian D. It is real and has real paperwork. The owner of the original selling dealer was located a few years ago along with original paperwork. Awesome car.

----And the back story was even more unbelieveable. The kid who ordered the car thought he was ordering aluminum valve covers. When the car came in he was really irritated that it was ordered wrong. I think the story board said that it was almost to the point of refusing the car. Am I right remembering that the dealer went out and got some aluminum valve-covers for him??? Even if wrong it made for a great story!!!.........Bill S

That is pretty wild. Altho, I might be upset too, paying the L89 option price for "aluminum valve covers"!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif

POSTSEDAN, That's ironic that you got those PHOTO'S of the two L-78s, the one without the vinyl is mine and the guy a purchased it from out of Downingtown Pa owned both of them. I bought the one without the vinyl top freshly restored and the sister L-78 to mine was Eric's wife's car. I have a photo to post. Steve

Nope. I had that discussion more than once.lol It left GM that way. Had plenty of paperwork and a know history, I guess it just slipped through.

SS427
06-22-2012, 01:38 PM
Now that is nice and I am not a real big fan of white but it is killer with the red interior.

I have argued the Malibu trim for years as well and have some VERY early shots of a couple of LS6 Chevelles with this same trim. The owners swear it came from the factory that way and I believe it did as well. GM made mistakes all the time so I think it would be very possible.

XXXGoldL34M20
06-22-2012, 05:08 PM
It is to bad that GM did not put the rocker trim as standard trim on the Super Sport cars as it would have added a nice flare of chrome along the bottom and it blends in pretty well with the wheel well trim.
I guess GM would goof up once in awhile putting it on a super sport car once in a blue moon <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Great pics guys! I have a friend I bought a 1969 SS350 Camaro from a few years back. A guy by the the name of Eric Mann who has restored numerous Chevelles in his spare time. This guy knows his stuff! Check out these videos from youtube and see for yourself. Enjoy!
