I knew there was a cam change in my 69 z28 so I have the engine out and heres what we found. Its stamped on the end 7141 and below that is B171 with an M with a big c around it. Also has a paint stripe in a circle, maybe white or tan around the end. I read where the 7141 could be a 140 off road cam. The bearings are dated 9/71 on the crank. Anyone have ideas? Didn't measure it yet.

The 7141 is the last part of the casting number which should make the cam a 3927140 first design off road. Hope this helps.

thats what I was thinking. It has a great sound but had trouble getting the idle to anything under 1400. Sounds like a race car lol.
going to get a little help with the idle when we dyno it.

Chevrolet knew what they were talking about when they released that aptly-named Off-Road camshaft. That's a pretty radical 'stick. I think most fellows would be much happier with a stock 302/290 camshaft (which is pretty radical in its own right) for street driving and just tell people at cruise night that it has the famous Off-Road camshaft stuck in it.

I was thinking about getting a 140 cam for mine but decided not to. It runs fine especially since I put the 56's in and changed the box to a wide ratio trans. To many people want to lift the hood on sbc's instead of jacking the car up and seeing whats under the trunk floor.

I ran a 140 cam an never found it to be unstreetable. I ran mine straght up but recurved the distributor, and ran the vac advance to manifold vac. I know some guys swear by this cam 4 to 6 degrees advanced. I really didn't think the idle was that much lumpier than the 30/30. Instead of 900, I set it about 1000. No big deal to me.

I never had plug fouling problems with the 140.

4.10 gears and wide ratio muncie.

If I still had a 140 cam, I would not hesitate for a second to put use it in either a 302 or a 350 with 11:1 compression.

In fact, Bill, if you want to trade your used 140 for a used 30 30, I can do that, and would pay shipping for both.

Sam, you hit the nail right on the head! Long ago 56's 88's and 5.13's were common under a SBC to make them put the hurt on almost everything. On the street and set up right they were untouchable.Sadly the years of high rpm screamers have passed. I used to run a General Kinetics cam in my 327 with the 10's and it really needed the 88's under it to make it sing. When's the last time you heard a SBC at 7500 + sing on the street? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/3gears.gif

I am a firm believer in gearing Big. 302's do not really have much torque so they need some help pulling out. I just like them to pull out even better. My friends ran a 1957 chevy 2 door wagon in G/MP back in the 70's-80's with a 288 inch motor a 6.17 ring and pinion , a Nash 5 speed with a 3.00 first gear and a 50 lb. flywheel. Needless to say the car was out of 1st. gear by the time the rear bumper passed the tree. They were the national record holder in 1976 at 11.33 and went as fast as a 10.82 in 1979-1980 right before they scratched Modified Eliminator from NHRA. I think the car weighed 3,500 lbs also. I learned back then it was about the gearing.

The 302 with the stock 30-30, 4;10 gears and M20 does just fine. No need to go any more radical for the street in my opinion.

My cousin has a speed shop and we left the 140 in it. Car has 4.88s now it it is fun. The cam appears to have been installed in the fall of 71. Odometer says 12800 and appears original. Engine was balanced and super clean inside. We are going to dyno when done and post on you tube. There are pictures of the car in 70 under the post i have about Thompson drag way if anyone is interested

Gears rule, now a days it's all pro touring and overdrives....I say if you wanna go down the highway at 1200 rpm buy a Honda. As little as I drive mine, nothing compares to the sound of my SBC sreaming down a country road.
