I got a little info on the car - The guy says it was a Motion conversion done at MacDonald Chev-Olds in Halifax. Supposedly they were licensed by Motion to do these - can anybody confirm this through Joel R,?
The car started life as an L78 and was converted to an L72. Guy says the car is still around, has been stashed away for some time. (At least it's still alive, hopefully ?!)

that appears to be a complete, correct deluxe interior. All the woodgrain pieces & pedal trim pieces are in place. It is simply a no console, standard dash (no gauges) car, an early one (note the straight headrests) also ...

What a handful this car was to drive! "Sandblaster" Nova, 427, tunnel ram, 4 speed, jacked WAY up. Everytime this car launched, it bounced all over the place. I remember him making a late night pass at Pennfield and shredding the driveshaft at speed- lots of sparks!

Looking at those ladder bars and based on the vintage I bet they didn't have floater on the axle housing. Boy THAT would make it bounce.....

interesting that car has painted 'headers by GM', but apparently looks to still have the smog in the photos. Unless my eyes decieve me?? Did any GM headers come with smog fittings?

mockingbird812
01-30-2013, 04:11 PM
Ask Kevin DeWitte ("427425"), original owner (still owns!) of a white factory L72 Camaro. He had Berger (or Berger recommended) drill dealership installed headers for smog so as not to void factory warranty.

W117Monte

That LS6 is soo cool. It just looks like it means business. No flashy wheels, just steel, and minimal lettering. in the black and white pic it has 11.65 on the window. Is that a competitive ET in B/S in 70-71?

69L78Post
01-30-2013, 10:01 PM
That would be the index for B/SA back then, I'd guess. I'd guess most of the cars in the pictures I'm posting are in the 12's. Pretty much all of them are sporting license plates.

Take a look at the color pic of king rat. It looks like the dial on the pass window says 11.57, and your copyright is 1971. The Black and white pic is 1970, and he has 11.65 on the window. Do you think the index would have gotten slower from 70-71? Not trying to argue with you or anything, im just pointing it out. Also it looks like in the later pics the steelies on the front are mounted on much shorter tires. Maybe he couldnt cut a light with the mags and taller fronts. I would love to know more details about this or any other 70 chevelle drag cars. You dont really see to many besides the famous blue ragtop.

69L78Post
01-31-2013, 12:24 AM
Yeah, that could be. I can find out what the car was actually running, I'll ask around. I've got more pictures of another 70 that was running out of Saint John at the same time, an LS-5 4 speed car called "Apollo" Pictures to follow.

Most have tow-tabs so the plates were probably needed to legally tow them....

That looks to actually be a '70 Acadian, not a Nova. That is where they placed the Acadian emblems. I had a documented 70 Acadian SS back about 14 years ago. Neat car, not a Nova, but sort of......Pretty sure I have copies of the documentation still.

I think Pennfield was always an NHRA track, not 100% sure. It don't the rules were always followed if you know what I mean...

I never met the owner/driver of "Hang em High", but he was involved with my Chevelle.

I drive across Pennfield Ridge half a dozen times every summer on the way up to PEI. Always look at that strip where they dry Sea kelp today and think "what a wicked drag strip that would have been"! Wished I'd been there back in the day but, then, I never would have gotten any further North (PE).
Great shots!!

Do you live in Manchester Rick? I get down to NH 3 or 4 times a year, my brother lives in Fremont, and has a 68 SS396 Camaro, as well as a 69 Malibu that he runs at Epping. (Are you going to the New England Nationals this year?)

My friend's pro stocker from the mid 70's. This was an original COPO car.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/racer7391/spino5.jpg

His A and B/MP record holding 67 Camaro. He ran it using the engines from the pro stocker. It is an original L-78 RS with under 20K miles on it. He still owns it today. He had it backhalfed in the late 70's but it has every bit of the born with sheet metal and interior except the hood is set aside with a hood scoop grafted to it. It still has the paint from back then on it,and it shines like new.

Now. He has an LS-6 crate motor and th400 in it and he set the Super Tricks and slicks aside so he can drive it to cruise nights. Unfortunatly health issues including being nearly blind, prevent him from driving it,so his on drives him around in it.

As you can guess,I am a fanatic for 2nd gen Camaro Pro Stockers.

O.K.,this is my retro looking race car. I guess it is kinda what it would have looked like if somebody built a Firebird to run Pro Stock or M/P in 1970. I packs a real 427 Chevy with a real 1969 GM flat tappet cam in it,and L-88 replacement heads. I photochopped over the 10.66 dial in with a 13.66 just to mess with my grudge racing buddies. The pic looks like it could be vintage, but it was 2009 E-town.

You're in luck...I found another photo. The car looks to be an original Hugger Orange COPO Chevelle with yellow paint appied to its sides.

polished slotted mags rock by the way,67 SS 396 4 speed that lost its engine due to way too many high rpm launches/shifts and then outfitted with a destroked small block at 277 cubic inches that could handle close to 11K rpm.

The 'HUCKLEBERRY HOUND' car is a black/black COPO from Wallace Chevrolet. Original owner is now retired in FL, retained the bill of sale and plate(s) from the car - before it was reportedly junked. Paper and tags were for sale about 6-7 years ago, a guy in NY supposedly bought the paper & tags because he had found the car...... Never heard from him again.

I'm curious if anybody can help ID this car and any of its past history. It was originally an F-F Norwood L78 RS/SS (4K) with black standard interior. Console but no gauges. The car has a cage and tubs in it. It was purchased out of Ohio 10+ years ago and was supposedly an A/Stock drag car when new. It appears to have spent time in Illinois. When I contacted the NCRS service, they unfortunately had no record in reference to the VIN. Does anybody recognize the cartoon caricature drawing on the back of the car? The rear wheel lip shows some clues to a past color scheme. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

just a question on whether there are any "rules" when it comes to "stock" body parts on these early 2nd gen Camaros

I know in SCCA, you HAVE to have everything as it came in the option package or model, no mixing and matching

the number of fake RS bumperette cars in this thread is numbing, but there is another "bastardized" front end combination that even looks worse ...

I UNDERSTAND why the regular front end cars use the RS bumperettes, it is lighter, but NOT correct (and would get you bounced in the SCCA):

I DON'T understand this one though ... I guess they ditch the heavy center section and keep the RS valances and somehow mold/morph a 72-73 full bumper grille ...

http://imageshack.us/a/img502/8237/mikevalerio.jpg

correct & complete RS front:

http://110.imagebam.com/download/dW7cnNBoQ7Q-D2mQr2Kv3A/31164/311637500/dynamic_performance.jpg

correct & complete standard full bumper front:

Just curious as to how the "rules" work or were supposed to work ...

I believe back then if the car came with it in any combo you could run it in NHRA.
Things changed more when they let them run the fiberglass front valences and even some of the glass nose pieces. If another racer did not protest you, NHRA let it go most of the time. AHRA, IHRA and NHRA had their own sets of rules. Maybe try to pick up some old Rule Books for better explanations.

Most of those 70 and up camaros were not very competitive in Pro Stock thus moving to the Vega.

Modified Eliminator they were good to go. Dennis Ferrera with the BM car in A/MP. KILLER!

Here is a video off of Youtube, my apologies if it's been posted before. There's a lot more makes on here than just Chevrolets. At the 8:46 mark there's a Garnet Red 69 Camaro called the "Aluminum Rat"

I'll chime in with a few thoughts, comments and requests. NHRA was pretty strict in Stock and Super Stock. No hood scoops or fiberglass parts unless factory installed. As for drivetrain combinations, they had to match the year of production; exterior appearance had to as well. There was also the "Year Rule" where a race car could only be so old as compared to the THEN current model. That is why some cars would get updated grills, trim, tail lights, etc. That's also why some good cars were forced to change class or even sanctioning body. Early on in the glory years of Stock and Siper Stock, NHRA mandated that the engine block, heads and carb be of the same manufacturing year as the car represented, but later they loosened the rules somewhat.
Now to my requests: I'm always hunting for any photos pertaining to any of the "Anderson Olds" race cars, particularly the '69 W-31 that I own and race. I'm also looking for pictures of a 1969 Camaro that I now own, it too is an ex-race car. When new, the Camaro was raced as "Super Paranoia" in SS/H by Bill Izykowski. It was then sold and renamed "Shangri-La" and had a couple different paint jobs and owners. The car spent a lot of time at East Coast tracks but did run The Gatornationals and the U.S.Nationals in B/S and SS/D.

Yep, .
Stock and Super Stock...factory steel...
Some guys knew some lightening tricks without the "acid" route......

After a few years, replacement sheet metal from Fisher Body used a gauge of sheet stock lesser than production line to stamp body panels......
Lottsa Stock /Super Stock cars 3-4 years old & older Did the Sheet Metal swaps.....

Late In 70 & Early 71 most Camaros wore glass panels in Pro Classes & M/P......by 72 most had only steel 1/4's , ribbibing & roofs. Partial tube frames, 100% back halved.. etc.

That's why Today, Authentic Early 2nd.Gen Race cars found after decades of hiding are Very Cut, Heavily Altered.. The Rules were as fast to change as the cars were.....
From. 11 seconds to the 9's. In less than 2 years.

Here are a few I have on this computer...

The Hugger Orange 69 Camaro - Candy Man - was campaigned locally out of Anderson SC and I suspect is a COPO. I went to high school with the original owners daughter and have since talked with Mr Cromer the original owner and he would love to buy it back in whatever condition. He owns Cromer Food Services - he was just starting when he raced... hence the Candy Man.

The LAST picture is of QUAIN STOTT's - Jim Little car which we suspect was constructed in the midwest... it is a 67 conv - REAL 4N C1 code - in the photo it has a lace paint job and a clear blue plex hood scoop.

Jim Little traded this car for the 70 Camaro which he took back and Dick Harrel built with the ZL1 engine which Kim Howie restored back to race trim.

If any one remembers the car from the Kansas or Oklahoma area he is getting me the VIN and I am going to run a NCRS on it.
