Funny you say that, The last few of these I looked at had an old picture of my 66 straight axle Nova in them. Damn if I know where they found it. This one has a pic of A&amp;M in Marlborough (industrial park) where people used to street race weekends on the access road. That, and there's a pic of my buddy Mikes Chevelle when it was a race car.

This picture brings back memories. My older next door neighbor did up a '66 Dodge van which I helped work on it at time and took me and several others to a &quot;Van-In&quot; in Butler PA in '76 or '77. I was 15 at the time.

Drugs, alcohol and sex was rampant at those things. I'm not exaggerating at night you could see(and smell) the haze of pot in the air.

I was walking to a porta potty late at night and just looked over and the side doors of this van was open and some guy was just going at it with this woman on the van floor- not a stitch of clothes on either. They both turned and looked at me and just smiled. &quot; When this van is a rockin...&quot;. Women were flashing their boobies everywhere. Good times before aids and herpes.

Frustrating to say the least at the time to a 15 year old guy. If my ultra religious parents only knew what was going on at those deals..

Great set of photos. This is when muscle cars were fun and not investments. Long gone are the days of walking around a car show shirtless or sitting on a blanket in the grass in front of your car!

I went back and looked at that link again, and every time I do, it brings back memories of the cars and vans my sister's friends all drove in the 70's, as well as a lot of the magazine cars that I remember so well from pouring over all of those Hot Rods, Car Craft and Super Stock mags from back then as well.

In case you have all not noticed each time you click on the link not only the picture order changes but 25% of the pictures are new each time and some are deleted.

I'm not familiar with tumbler but is there a way to see all the pics??

I really liked this link.....brought back some good memories. I laughed when I noticed one of the pictures was of my brother and his girlfriend leaning against his 70 Mustang. Picture was taken sometime around 1973 or so.

We teased him and told him Jim Croce wanted his tennis shoes back. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/haha.gif

Did they ever get hitched?

One thing I like about Hemmings Muscle Machines it's usually brought up frequently in the feature car articles where the guys speak of their girlfriend who drove around with them back in the day and are now their wife of many years. I don't see any other magazines doing this...the human interest side of the hobby.

Looking at the pics the tumbler site I wonder what the people are doing today, are they still alive, did they ever get married to the girl in the pic, are they still into cars etc.

Most of the guys that were my dads friends back in the 70's are long gone. The few that remain are still car guys, but they have turned into &quot;gold chainers&quot; who sit in their folding chairs at cruise ins and go home at 8.30.
I told my kids if I ever turn into one of those guys, they are to make me sell all my stuff and put me on a park bench.

Kurt.. you can click on the archive button in the upper, left hand corner, and it will bring up thumb nails of all the pictures. They are in order by date. Click on each thumb nail to enlarge.

I was born in 1963
And I grew up next to a parkway I remember
The cars racing at night and losing control
And hitting the light poles and trees ...
( street racing up there almost every night in the summertime .
Most of my friends older brothers had muscle cars
Or one modified into a street machine
It was. A great time to grow up ......
( I like the yenko vega picture with the lboy in
The snorkle jacket I had the same coat back then..)

Been there hundreds of times. But we were too poor to have the engine crane, it was 2x6s, chain, and come-a-longs. I remember putting Muncies together with a flashlight so we could drive that night...

I wish I had enough sense to carry a camera with me on the hundreds of Friday and Saturday nights we spent cruising Porky's and the Sun Drive in, Hennipen Ave, Excelsior Blvd, Snelling Ave, etc in Mpls and St. Paul in the 70's and 80's. The thousands of cars that attended would be so neat to look at now.

Wow, great site that brings back a bunch of memories of good times being a teen in the 70's.
Anybody notice how &quot;pie eyed&quot; some of the guys and gals looked in some of these pictures.

As Rick said above, if we were only smart enough to take a camera!

There is a youtube video that I stumbled upon titled &quot;Cruising Forest Lane Dallas-1977&quot; that was taken by some guys that did bring a camera and it really could have been filmed anywhere in that time as we pretty much did the same things here in the Midwest.

I apologize for not linking the video (computer illiterate)but if someone could, it would be much appreciated.......Scot

71 Nova.... 66 327, M-22, 4:88's, ET mags, Lakewoods, glass pack header muffs, no inner fenders, never seen it with a hood on!

well.... have been building a 69 Camaro with my oldest son. coming along good. My youngest son turned 15 last Friday. Of course he had to get his permit on his birthday and we had a surprise birthday party for him afterwards. Hes a little motorhead. He might be young but ALWAYS wants to be in the middle of the car projects going on. Hes in love with the 67 mustang fastback so when I found this one in a storage unit for 25 years I couldn't pass. It was his teachers late husband who was killed by a drunk driver. She had a real hard time giving it up but knew Austin ( my youngest) from school and felt he was the one that the car should go to. I got it running... new tank, lines, pumps, battery, complete brake system and it drove last Friday for the first time in 25 years !!! The next day hes pulling the motor. Cant blame him.
he has an advantage as I have a machine shop(Big-machine.com ) that he can use to build it real cheap.
Hes an old school type. Loves the bigs and littles not the 19's. watching him inside the engine compartment reminds me of me and my buddys back in the day.... never changes ! love it !!
we are all so lucky to be addicted to cars. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/burnout.gif

yep ! Hes on me everyday when I get home. Hes got the new motor in and installed MY yellow accel super coil. Waiting for the ballast resistor so he wont burn up the points ! Trying to teach him that points WILL get the job done and how to set and maintain them. pertronix or MSD at a later date. Hes so old school. Had to have the yellow accel plug wires, white headers and wants the fly eye air cleaner. funny !!! He wants the Shelby body kit but wants to leave the paint rat rod / barn find style. go figure.... where he gets this from I don't know but its all good !!

Love your Camaro. Very nice and clean.

I always liked this paint scheme..This car is still around and still has it's late 70's paint. It was in Hot Rod last year or so under one of those &quot;where are they now?&quot; articles.

I've always wondered why it sagged in the left front as I had that magazine new.

Also, anyone know what the rear offset is on those Cragars? I assume they are 15x8's?

The rears are 15x8 reversed(deep dish). Approx 2.25-2.50 bs. Cragar only offered two bs back then on all their wheels-standard offset and deep dish..Not much choice like today.

A classmate in HS in the late 70's had blue/white top 70'71 'vert with the fiberglass hood. Original paint car he bought from the original owner. He put Cragars on it and ran it to death and literally beat the crap out of it.. what a shame. Never knew what finally happened to it.

My 73 Firebird has been a street race car since the early 80's. I bought it in 1994 after years of abuse, and kept on abusing it. I don't have any pics of it from back in he day,but I have some ones from the last few years, and the car definatly still has the back in the day vibe. Runs 10's with a mild pump gas 427 BBC and 9's with a little spray. I took it apart in 2010 to redo it and haven't gotten it back together.

Back around 2006

RichSchmidt

No,never ran faster then mid 9's,but that was with raw motor gears (4.88's or 4.56's) and a 250 shot. I was almost on the 8000 rpm chip on the big end. I had a 400 hp kit on it,but never tuned it past 250. I would have needed 4.33's or 4.10's to step up past that. The cam at the time was a Crane flat tappet that nosed over at about 6900rpm on motor, and probably shouldnt have been going past about 6600 on the spray.

When I went 9.60's and 70's with the car I had a pair of bowl blended 990 iron heads on it that had a crack between 2 of the valves and lost the exhaust seal. I may have been running on 7 and a half cylinders then. I built the car to run NMCA/NSCA Easy Street which required iron heads, flat tappet cam, plate system,850 carb,8.5# per cube on stock suspention and 11.5&quot; wide DOT tires. At 439 cubes I had to weigh about 3700#,I was 3650 when I ran on the nitrous back then. The combo was the wrong one,as the class highly favored small engines, and in particular small block Fords which worked better within the rules. When one of the small block Fords started running 8.50's it was just insane to think that even my car on a big kit running 8.80's would stand a chance. I decided that maybe drag radial class would be better and the rules were stock oem part number heads and block,3400# for big block, and a single plate system with #4 feed line. That class stepped up real fast,I think I could have done well, but there were issues with the rules. I decided to replace my heads with a set of GMPP L-88 replacement aluminum heads because they are the NHRA legal replacement head for the 074 factory head. My opinion is that they allowed 188 and 990 iron heads as replacement for the old factory installed rectangular iron heads, even though they never technically came on a production car,so why not the L-88 Version. I got an informal nod from one of the tech guys, but after buying and porting the heads, they decided that the heads I had were actually made for GM by Edelbrock, and were made of superior casting material and cores, and were therefore too superior to the original heads to be considered factory replacemnt. Their logic was right, but it still pissed me off. The heads were basically cast in the same molds as the Edelbrock Victor or RPM heads with just a GM part number, and were left rough cast so the ports were the same size as the factory L-88's. They have enough material to port out to the size of a monstor 375cc head just like the Edelbrocks,so since head porting was allowed,it these heads would allow me to port to way beyond what the original L-88 heads could go,vs what the 990 and 188 iron heads which truly could only be ported as far as the factory originals that they were replacing. I wasnt about to spend any money on crack prone 074 heads,or on iron heads that weighed a ton. I just threw in the towel, put a Dominator on the car, took the nitrous off and went electronics class bracket racing as a 10 second car.

Interesting fact, the aluminum heads hit the domes on my SRP pistons, and my SRP pistons are actually for a 496 but I am running them in a 439 with .250&quot; longer rods,so the domes are a little too small for a 439 anyway,so I layed back the chambers in the heads and the compression dropped to 11.2:1. I blew the bottom end up after almost 700 runs with zero maintence(threw 2 H-beam Manley rods),and decided to reuse 6 of the pistons with a new block and crank and rods since the old combo ran so good,I tried a bigger flat tappet cam,and it wiped out before I got the engine broken in,so a friend of mine who raced and built engines for pro stock back in the early 70's had an old GM flat tappet cam from back then laying on the shelf, and gave it to me to try. It was a variation of the old L-88 cam with only .560&quot; lift. I changed the oil and stabbed the new cam in and the car ran 10.49@128 on motor at 3425# with the stock GM cam and pump gas compression(I run race gas for consistency though). This combo is very mild, and is less radical then a real L-88. The engine is so mild mannered it is like driving an every day production car only it makes 600hp. I plan on milling the heads to get it to 12:1 and stabbing a little bigger cam in it with a tunnel ram and 2 660's when I drop it into the 2800# vintage pro stock 70 Camaro that I am restoring and figure that if it doesnt certify I will need to tune it down to run slower then 10.0.

You probably saw a pic when it looked like it did back in it's &quot;race car&quot; days. I hung fiberglass doors and front clip on it with lexan windows, and an iron headed small block with 10.5:1 and a mediocre solid roller cam. It weighed about 2900# with me in it,and ran mid 11's. To be fair though,I had a super duper nitrous convertor in it(and no nitrous),and I would later find that the nitrous convertor was way wrong for this combo. I used the same convertor in the car with my big block, and it ran 12.0's(3600#'s though) the first time out with a very dead 1.70 60 foot just like the small block(not spinning though). I did make a few tune up changes to the engine, but nothing drastic, but I swapped out the 5000 stall nitrous convertor for a 5000 stall super stock type unit, and went 6 tenths faster. The small block not only would have probably went 10.90 and a 1.48 60 foot with the better convertor, but probably needed more convertor too. The small block should have been running 10.60's at 2900#,but never got there.

Not a 70's style street car,but it was driven on the street. Notice the low style Camaro spoiler. That was inspired by me seeing the rat bird article above.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/racer7391/bluebird2.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/racer7391/media/bluebird2.jpg.html)

Or this, when it had a a 355 with ported camel hump heads, flat tappet cam,th-350 with 3500 stall, weighed 3400# and had 4.10's in it,and ran 12.0 on motor, only hitting 3rd as the car approached the stripes. I swapped in 5.13's,and hit my rpm at the stripes and the car went a tenth slower,go figure. It had no roll bar, full stock interior, power brakes, loud stereo, and drove to the track

Love the hood treatment! We have a 72 Trans Am in the shop that we will be doing a bunch of upgrades to including a 6 speed and front and rear suspension upgrades. It sports a similar customized hood. Check out the F16 control stick. The owner owns an absolutely gorgeous P51D and F4U Corsair as well.

The Pontiac guys call that hood &quot; The Poncherello Treatment&quot; after Erik Estrada's character on CHIPS, who drove a modified T/A with a Formula hood with a hole chain-sawed through it for a shaker scoop.

As long as we're talking about Trans Am's....cue the background music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk0keMJFLAg

I'm a HUGE fan of cars that look like you just pulled the cover off of them in some old garage after 30 years in hiding and this car more than fits the bill. I had been looking for a 73 Formula to build a SD clone for Pure Stock &amp; F.A.S.T. racing and this car came along at the right time. Unfortunately I'll have to build it for Street Class or just for fun as both classes will not allow me to run it with the &quot;Show Car&quot; paint scheme.

The car is currently running a rebuilt 79 TA TA Pontiac 400 and T-10 but that will be replaced by a 73/74 SD motor sometime in 2014. Heads and a carb are on their way &amp; I haven't yet decided if I'll use a SR 455HO block I already have or a SD block. Intake is still in the air as I have a 72 HO unit like what was on the car during it's show days but I'm leaning towards an LS-2 intake if I can find one for the right price.

Car is outfitted with the ASC sunroof, Recaro seats in NOS condition and a 70's era Blaupunkt Stereo with multiple speakers &amp; remote. The car is only showing 14,000 miles and the enamel paint is in super condition only needing a little work to be perfect. The only change to the exterior of the car will be the addition of SD 455 decals to the shaker and possibly a wheel/tire change to something more towards stock - we'll have to see. The A/C will be removed and a full compliment of period correct Stewart Warner gauges sourced from GTODon's private collection will be filling the holes in the dash - Musclecollector has even promised me a pair of NOS Levis Bell-bottom blues!

I'm hoping to track down the owner who performed the modifications to get more history on the build, when it was done, where it was shown, answer questions about the obvious BMW M1 influances and if there were ever any magazine appearances. As my son said when I texted him the pictures &quot;THAT CAR IS SICK!&quot; I'm real excited, and can't wait to get it!!!

It´s a pic taken by Hasse Biörck at the very small Vårgårda airfield, not that far from Gothenburg Sweden. I believe that´s what the Vega looked like when it left the United States. They usually raced the cars in U.S. trim the first year then repainted them in the Swedish sponsors colors for the second year.
It has &quot;Leufvéns&quot; decals on it, which was a rather big speedshop over here.

There were articles as early as 1971 for the street but SS lines I would say really started to be used on the street around 1977-1978..that is when there was ton of how two articles. Some cars used them before then but it was rare. The late 70's Pro Street scene really made them famous.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: 68ys8030</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> when did the red and blue AN fittings come into the street scene? Dan , it sometimes makes me feel like I was born a little too late! I would have loved to have been part of this era.
I'd love to do a day 2 car one day. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

For anyone who was not old enough to remember these years you have no idea what you missed especially if you lived in one of the car mecca cities. I was in Minneapolis so we had exposure everywhere 7 nights a week. Give anything to go back to those days.

Fond memories of the good old days. Some foggier than others, but hey.

I remember seeing that car in the Car Craft Street Freaks magazines.

Love it. I always wanted to do a blue flake car.
Still do, but good luck finding somebody to do it affordably.

He then sanded the lettering to age it and flat cleared it in ppg . 289 hi po ,5 speed , 410 posi. He spent every day after school on this car and he couldn't be prouder!

I'm holding out for this one. The big block was removed for a 350 but the car is otherwise untouched. Took me years to find it.

Ive drooled on that picture for years and it took awhile to track it down. I talked to the current owner this morning. All he would tell me is it will take a good offer to sell it. If I ever get it from him its going to get put exactly how it is in that picture.

Funny thing is while searching for that Nova this 69 found me. 1 owner barn car. Bought it for my sons first car. Collecting day 2 parts because he wants early 70s street machine look right down to the tunnel ram and L88 hood. Heres a few: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/notstock71/zachnova10.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/notstock71/zachnova9.png

This is his inspiration. Keep the original yellow, black motion style stripe on the hood and it HAS to be a 4 speed

Wow...that kid is like us older guys opening just arrived boxes ...
Did he get that shiner defending his rite of passage working on the car ?

in my book,, a Father and son build to his dream car is far more rewarding than buying someone else's from years ago.....maybe your son's Nova can be your inspiration ad well and maybe &quot;he'll let you add a few things&quot; you like from that Old Nova Street Beast !!! lol...

Take a kid to a car show has nothing on...hey Dad, let's go work on it in the garage !
You gotta be proud !

That's what got me hooked. Weekends in the garage working with Dad, going to junkyards, etc. It's how we spent every single Saturday in the summer from about age 11 until I left for college.

Dad got me hooked, car shows and races, polishing the Camaros. His car will be built how he wants it, it's his vision. I have my 71 to build my way and the one I am trying to buy is one I have lusted over for years.

As for that eye, well, lets just say it was a note to self moment. When running in gym class watch where you are going. Lesson learned the painful way.

My first adventure into a car I could actually play with, work on and try my hand at was a Steel 32 Ford 5 window CPE. Sitting on a painted frame, big Olds rear, white big pleated naugahyde with no motor or trans. .
an old Hot Rod from the Early 60's.

I had no idea or what to do, had no money or access to mom's purse and at 13 1/2 - 14, I saw a Hemmings ....and parted it out !
and got a 36 Pontiac Cpe that only needed upolstrey and gas tank....
A 32 5 Window. ....still gotta have one
