Wow! What a crazy car week this has been. While telling Rick Pauley (RixLS6) how to find a certain 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan for sale.....Rick stumbles on something even better!

I said.... "What could possibly be better?" Rick, says "I found a Real Black SS396 Post Sedan and its an L78 car" In the mean time my phone is ringing off the hook as others are finding out about this car....Fire Spreading Fast.

As I type this, Rick Pauley and Jim Hanke are driving back home with this real Black L78 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle on the trailer.

Look for more pictures....and the complete story from Rick in a few days.

Special Thanks go out to Jim Hanke for driving Rick and picking up this Special Chevelle.

Congrats to Rick Pauley (RixLS6) on purchasing his third 1969 Post Sedan and his second SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle.

Pics.....Obviously a drag car most all it`s life. What a shame for someone to cut open a real SS Hood.

Dan,
Im pissed off and happy all at the same time. Being this car was for sale 10 minutes from my house and I never went and looked at it. Im pissed its not in my garage but happy its in someones hands that will completely restore it correctly.. Im definitely looking forward to more pics. Whats the chances that the build sheet is behind the original door panels.

Just got home with the new addition.
If Dan hadn't told me to look at the Detoit Craigslist, I wouldn't have known about this car.
I'll post what pics I took after we first got there and then put her on a trailer.
She's had a harsh drag car life, but what a cool find. It's had at least 4 different colors on it, Black, Yellow, Red, and now blue.
I'll be putting it in my shop tomorrow morning as it's too hard to maneuver my driveway when it's dark out.

That's what the decal on the back window says.

Rick,
Theres a private school I beleive here in the Detroit area where the car is from called De LaSalle. Maybe an old parking permit. Thats what it looks like to me.

Mike,
Yes it is a parking permit for that school.
What kind of a private school is it? Anything to do with pilot training?

I'm wondering if possibly the first owner may have gone to that school as it's a pretty faded out decal for student parking.

Rick,

Is that a factory or Ziebart under coating plug I see? Very typical for a Mid-West/Detroit car.

Car is definitely a factory four speed that was converted to an automatic for racing.
It is an automatic radiator, No factory tach just idiot lights.
Car's only showing 16K on the odometer.

Notice the boarded up house in the background?
Seemed like about 20 % of the houses in the area were boarded up and about one house every other block was destroyed by fire.

The occupants of Detroit vandalize, burn, and destroy almost anything.. A pretty rough area. I was born and raised there, it's kind to bad it could be very nice.city. A aplace you don't wanna be after dark.

The neighborhood where this car was photographed was probably beautiful and prosperous 30 years ago. Too bad. The homes actually look nice here. Similar thing going on in some of the hoods near Cleveland. Not as bad as Detroit though.

Yeah, that neighborhood does look like it was very nice way back when.
What a shame.

Took a few pics early yesterday when Jim (Wheelhop) brought the car to my shop.
More to come later.
Original drums and rotors still on it.
Looks like a Lakewood rollbar, right?

Yes, except for my shaky old hands blurring it.
I cleaned one of the spiral shocks in the rear, and it has a 69 date with an F41 part number.
I'll check the other shock today when Dan comes over to help me strip the junk off the car.

Dan,
I have a question was the 410 (kk) exclusive on the L78s or could it be ordered on its little brothers.(350/325 horse). My 300 deluxe hardtop has a 355 rear that prolly was available on any big block motored chevelle?

Thanks Mike

Helmut,
The pics make the body look better than it actually is. It has been repainted at sometime and had rust repair before also.

Garnet Red is a great color on a 69 Chevelle.
In the late 80's I paid 2k for a 69 SS 396 4spd faded white with a black vroof motor apart in the trunk and the muncie hung with a piece of baling wire from the firewall. Didn't think anything about checking to figure the original color (I could have cared less as I would paint them whatever color I wanted back then) When I looked up the cowl tag numbers I learned it was originally Garnet Red... I thought who would ever paint a factory Garnet Red car white?

I painted it Garnet with the black roof and black bench, it was beautiful! I wish I could have them all back!

Best way to keep them lubricated is short bursts of approx 1320 feet at max rpm.

I've been asking about my car over at Yellowbullet.com, and have had a couple guys remember the car.

Here's one response.
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I need to ask a couple of questions..............

1.) Does the roll bar only have the hoop, rear bars and one door bar ?

2.) The rear suspension, does it have the upper and lower control arms removed and the old style Lakewood ladder bars welded in place ?

The reason I ask is there were a couple of Good Ole boys that brought us a 1969 Chevelle back in the mid nineties and we built them a 540, for the life of me can't remember the guys name, but his brother was in a wheelchair with a bullet lodged in his spine. They street raced this thing down by the Detroit City Airport area. This car ran mid to low nines which scared the hell out of me the way it was put together. They came up to our shop to build the motor so no one downtown knew anything about the motor.

The car looks familiar.

Jim </div></div>

Here's another

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Originally Posted by 540chief

Everyone call him Cowboy. (the name on the window). If I remember correctly this car was a stick car also, or it was when it was raced through the early 80's. Its seen some street action in the late 70's, but mostly track after that. Cowboy passed away a few years ago, great person. Known him sense I was 8 years old, I'm 45 now. Hope this helps. Yeah, they do get pretty rough over there, but I do have a guy that is talking to me about the car I'm wanting info on.

Here's one of his PM's to me.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Do you remember the car being blue at that time, or yellow, or maybe even red, as it was all those colors after the original black?</div></div>

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">It was black from the late 70's (as far back as I can remember) until early 90's. I don't know his real full name, My father is pretty ill at this time and won't remember. He, nor did anyone else mention him selling it. I talk to Cowboy a month before he passed, he was always at the track, and he talk about working on it, changing this and changing that.
It was change to an automatic in the 80's because he couldn't get the stick to launch correctly. I remember that pretty well, due to it being the only track rental I ever seen at Detroit Dragway in the early 80's. Cowboy and Fast Phil knew the owners pretty good and they let them test when ever they wanted..
Multiple colors was right up his ally being he was just a big old country boy having fun. What ever color his flat bed truck was the car soon followed. Hope this helps

The same guy that gave me that lead knows the guy that Cowboy bought it from, and will be talking with him soon.
I don't know if he will be the original owner or not, but it still will help get me closer to finding the early history of this car.
Also it is believed that that guy will have old pics of the car. I sure hope so.

It was heavily street raced around Detroit, and also saw it's fair share of time at the local dragstrip.

The body rebuild process has begun.
I have a very talented bodyman that is doing the work in my shop, as I couldn't do this on my own.
Progress will be a bit slow as he can only come here on Saturdays, but he is a very persistent, so gets quite a bit done when he's here.

First step, now that the old floor is completely removed, is to rebuild where the rocker meets the floor and the hinge jam as well as the body mount boxes.

Yes, the original frame is useable, but will need a new piece welded in where someone cut a chunk out for crossmember removal, and also need to cut off the added-on ladder bar adjustable mount. Rest of it looks surprisingly good, with no rot out around the body bushing areas.
Body will be coming off the frame next week, when we put the floor in.

Ryan, yes I found a good plastic dash housing, and also have the metal section of dash at the windshield area, where it meets the cowl panel.

Tony,
The original salesman, who later became the owner of the dealership, said he thought he had some memorabilia from the era for his dealership (McCormick Motors), but I never could get him to follow through.
I'll have to call and E-mail him again to see if he will respond.

Gentlemen I have always heard that the body needs to be braced before removing the complete floors like that because the body is so unstable. Is there any truth to that. Apparently Ricks comfortable with not doing it. Just looking for the knowledge. Rick glad to see that old tired beast is getting a second chance at life. Keep the pics coming!

The guy doing this rebuild for me had just finished doing an Olds Cutlass convertible.
Other than a couple braces to attach the cowl section to the rear inner quarters, he had the body sitting on jackstands just like this one is. That car is now a beautiful finished piece, that fits together like it should.
Obviously with the post sedan body, the extra bracing was not required.

A little more progress, as we now have the floor fitted.
We had to do a lot of repair work to the rockers/inner rockers, as someone had decided to drive a large punch through the bottoms of the rockers for drainage or something.
We also felt the best way to get at the holes and jack damage on the outer rocker, was to remove the inner rocker.
After a lot of cleaning, welding and grinding, as well as some primer sealer to the inner rocker, and POR 15 applied to the inside of the outer rocker, we were ready to affix the inner rockers to the new floor pan.
I originally was going to use a floor out of another car, but we realized the pan was slightly tweaked from a wreck the donor car had, and there was some small rust holes starting in the driver's footwell, that grew as I tried to weld them. With that, decided to use a good repo pan.
We'll have to remove the bucket seat brackets off it, and later put in a good used bench seat floor hump.

It looks like the bench seat mount holes, with weld-nuts, are there so after we cut the bucket seat brackets off, it should be set. We'll know for sure soon.
I don't think there are any floors with the bench seat shift hump already installed, but I didn't look very much for that as I've had this new floor in stock here for a few years. I don't remember seeing any suppliers with that option years ago anyway.

John,
No sandblasting will be done in the garage or here at all.
After we are done with our metal repair and replacement, but before we hang the quarter panels, the body shell will go on to a rotisserie. Then when all is done, we have a guy who will come get the shell on the rotisserie, soda blast it, and return it to us for final body smoothing, etc.

We got the floor all welded in now. Man there is a lot of it that needed to be done. Took all day.
No picture updates as it all looks pretty much the same, but now the car is solid on the bottom.

Next step, to move the rear jack stands forward to just in front of where the rear axle would sit.
Then we will remove the trunk floor and replace.
After that it will go on a rotisserie for the quarter panels, one side then the other, not taking both off at the same time.
Looking forward to next Saturday. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Trunk floor and wheelhouses look pretty clean! That's the way to do it - all at once. Nice work buddy, keep us updated!

Looking good Rick. Big project. I'm sure it will look great in the end.

I see you got a couple of extra screw drivers and lugnuts out of the deal. Funny what is hidden in these cars.

I stopped by Rick's place yesterday. He and his co-worker were hard at it. Rick said it's the deepest he's ever been in a car but he sure seemed like he was having fun.

Below is a picture of Rick's doctor at work.

Rick,

BE CERTAIN you duplicate the factory foam pad between outer wheel well and quarter panel on the left side <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Rick,
Coming along great! Since your sheet metal doctor has got the whole rear of the car dissected how does one know that the new panel is welded in correctly was there a vertical measurement taken off the floor at the tail panel. If it's off a half inch up or down could cause issues later on. Sheet metal work like this is very intriguing to me and I'm always trying to learn something is the only reason I'm asking.

What's the plan with the old tail panel? I need the two vertical braces on each side of the trunk latch. Interested in selling them?

We took some measurements and did some scribing as to where things originally were.
We won't do any welding until there is a trunk lid in place to use as a fit guide as well as mocking up the quarters.
This is all a first time for me, so I am surmising some of this, and will defer the actual procedure to my &quot;Dr&quot;.
I'll take pics again as he goes about the final fit.

I have to admit, as Kurt said, that this is fun to learn as the car goes through a nearly complete restructuring.

The 2 vertical braces off my old tail panel may not be any good as it was pretty rotted back there, but if there is a good one or both I'll let you know.

I found no indication that the car had a side stripe when I stripped some of the added paint off the quarter panel.
My plan is to build the car pretty close to how it came originally. I do like the bright side window trim on a black car, but this one didn't come with it.
I like the correct small white-lettered Goodyear Wide Tread, that would have been used in `69.
