Hi Guys - I am looking at possibly buying this one with tghe plan of dropping in a nice little 289 and adding 5 lug wheels...

asking price is 19.5 obo

Inline 6, 4 speed and 7.75 diff. single stage paint about 10 yrs old, AZ car with supposed zero rust and 100% orig body panels.

Any ideas on fair price as well as costs assoc. with swapping to v8 (less motor build costs ie spindles/diff etc...)

If you like the look of the car and it is in fact solid and straight I think the price is ok. I would not want to paint it though at the price on top of the mechanicals you want to perform. 10K more to the budget will get you a lot more car up front. Ask yourself if you can get there with this example. I have a couple of 6 shooters and find they are great cars as is and typically are in better shape than their bigger brothers. That all being said 16K would be a no brainer. I like the absence of dealer undercoating on this one. Good luck

cost to convert to a V8 will depend on how resourceful you are. You can get the parts off of a dead project on the cheap for likely 500 bucks. If you start thinking 9 inch, PDB all rebuilt control arms, fresh built roller small block and then pay someone to do the work you will be upside down before the wrenches come out of the box. 30K will buy you a lot of 65-66 Fastback these days as many people have gravitated to the 67 and newer cars for the big block capacity.

I concur w/ SportyWorty. I'm on my 4th 66 fastback in 15 years. If the paint and interior are really good as-is, that's not a bad deal in the end, but $16-7K is a better number. I'm always leery of converted T-code (6cyl) cars, mostly because I'm never sure how much conversion work was done, or how well it was done. You'd be surprised how many Mustangs are out there running around with 5 lugs on one end, 4 lugs on the other, depending on which end the builder thought was more important, lol. To me, the car you're showing is a perfect candidate for a R&C custom front suspension that upgrades everything and gets rid of the shock towers. EFI V8 of your choice, 5 speed, and an Explorer disc brake 8.8" rearend. That stuff seems expensive until you add up the costs of replacing and refurbing everything underneath, which is what you end up doing with a 6 cyl car. Good luck!

BTW, there's a thread on FordFE.com of a guy wondering why overseas buyers are shying away from his converted T-code fastback. It turns out that in many foreign countries (such as Sweden, Germany, etc) DMV takes note of obvious engine changes (6 cylinder car by VIN now sporting a V8) and will often deny them registration. That's somewhat significant since many '65-68 Mustangs trade hands on the world market these days.

"I have a couple of 6 shooters and find they are great cars as is and typically are in better shape than their bigger brothers."

That's for sure.
Plus the lighter 6 is less likely to have "caved in" the shock towers, a condition which can be corrected, but it is a pita.

thanks for the feedback everyone.

Problem with the other cars I see they seem to be "done" but have items that arent right for me ie auromatic, unappealing interior colors and or paint, over 30k.... etc....

I can do all work myself so that is not an issue. I also don`t want to pay for a "numbers car" only to find out VIN etc have been changed...

If anyone has any leads on any other fastbacks 65-67 let me know.

p.s. the seller of this one has a complete & rebuildable 289 & diff from a donor 65 that could be bought or nego. in the price.

Cheers,

Chris

----Went to the Detroit Autorama today and there were only three 65/6 Mustangs there. Guess what....All three were six shooters. Oh,,,and none had the super cool headers (or should I say header). Im no six in-a-row guy but Id have a tough time changing the character of this particular cute little 6-banger "Stang"!.......Bill S

This car is about 5 miles from me. Could look at it for you. I restore and locate Mustangs/Cougars and parts so can give you an honest evaluation.
The tag shows the DSO is 54 Omaha so not a Cal car just an FYI.
