This is my new project for the near future. I've been looking for a nice rust free 69 Nova, to build a hot rod out of. No numbers this time, just a cool dependable fast, noisy driver.

Many of you know the car, that I got from Tom Williams. I know some may not like the idea of hot rodding an original car like this, but with a 6 cyl powerglide nova, I don't see an issue. I'll probably save the motor, trans, & rear, and stick it in a corner, so if and when the car is sold, the drive train will go with it.

It will be driven around this summer, while I get parts together for a big block, 4 speed, change over. The body was a rust free survivor, with the original vinyl roof, interior, trunk spatter paint, etc. Tom did a cosmetic restoration. It was striped to bare steel, all the dings removed, and painted.

I have a very long list of parts I need, but it should be a fun project. I already have the big block core, a new Auto gear M22, and some other odds and ends. The plan is to build a stock looking healthy big block/4 speed. Maybe some day 2 stuff, like a tach/gauges, cheater slicks, and who knows what else.

Looking forward to some advise from the hot rodders here. I'm use to numbers and inspection marks, but not this time. I wanta go fast, make a lot of noise, and go cuuzing. I will post pictures as this project progresses.

Here's the 1st project for the 6 banger-to- big block/m22 conversion. I found some very nice Gm clutch pedal parts, including the bell crank all the rods, switches. They look a bit rusty, but most of that is just dirt. I also found a nice floor shift steering column. It all goes in the blaster cabinet tomorrow, then paint, and will be put in storage, until they're needed.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3350_zps0da649ff.jpg

Well, here's my 1st before & after shot. The hole in the bell-crank for the clutch fork rod was a bit warn and oval shaped. I made a little copper jig/tube to put in the hole, and Albert welded around the copper, to make the hole smaller/the correct size again, for the rod. Then some minor grinding and re-drilling the hole, and it was good as new.

Then I blasted all the stuff (thanks Albert for the use of the cabinet) and painted everything. Soooooo, the fun has begun. The motor goes to the machine shop tomorrow evening. Lots of plans for that. Thanks to Bill Waters/Chris Straub for all the advise. We're looking for horsepower in the 500 range, with the combination in the plan, and some pocket porting. It should be a fun project.

It sounds like a great plan Bill. I would also like to do 4spd conversion on the 69 Nova in the future, I'll be watching closely.

Looks like a good start Bill...but, I don't think 500 horsepower will be enough to get Albert's attention <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif

...of course in a light weight car like that Nova you should be able to spot him a car length or two and still catch him on the top end <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Sounds like a great project. What engine/head combo are you using?
James

Bill Rose
03-20-2013, 01:05 AM
James, still not 100% sure on the engine details, but it will have the COPO/L 78 look to it, with a 163 intake, cast iron ex manifolds, smog, etc. I have an Autogear M22 sitting here with nothing to do. I'll probably stick a Moser 12 bolt in it. It should be a bullet proof drivetrain. We're looking for about 475-500 hp. No trailer queen this time. It's gonna be a fun car.

Bill Rose
04-05-2013, 02:55 AM
Been busy with the Nova project, although the car doesn't look any different. The machine work on the motor is done. Just need the cam and springs, so we can finish up the heads.

The floor shift steering column is done. So are the pedals, and clutch linkage.

The new Moser rear came today. That thing is a work of art. I got it with 342's and an Eaton posi unit, with those strong Moser axles.

Still lots to do to get ready for the drive train swap, but I'm way ahead of where I thought I'd be in early April.

Here's a few shots of the progress.

Bill,

Very Nice, does that Moser Rear End have a breather? Can you drill an original style breather into the same location, to give it that stock look.

Dan

Bill Rose
04-05-2013, 01:07 PM
It does have a breather Dan, but not where I would have put it. It's on top of the left side tube, about 6&quot; from the pumpkin. No one asked me where to but the hole, when they were designing the 12 bolts..lol...I'm not crazy about drilling a hole in the cast iron for a vent, but I wouldn't rule it out. They also don't have brake line clips, but I understand Inline Tube makes a repro, thats works. I'm doing this project to keep it out of the trailer, away from numbers, and paint daubs, but I seem to be drawn toward that world anyway.....

Hey Bill,
I came by this picture from along time ago. One of the best built cars I ever owned. I sold it because I wanted a numbers cars. 20/20 hindsight, it was not one of my better moves.

Bill Rose
04-19-2013, 12:51 AM
Yea, 20 20 hindsight, I shouldn't have sold it. That was my 1st modern day restoration. I got that car in boxes. I had a lot of fun in that noisy hot rod. Thanks for the memories Mark...

I got into the numbers too. Built 2 numbers/trailer queens, and now I'm back to building this Nova. Lots of progress/not much that I can show with pictures. Spent the past several weeks building a motor. I have the big block all assembled, and ready for a coat of Chevy orange/maybe tomorrow...

Bill Rose
04-25-2013, 09:12 PM
I haven't done an update for a while. Not much to post pictures about, but I got a lot done in the past month or so. I pretty much got the whole motor built. It just needs a few external parts, like the smog system, fan, plugs/wires, etc. All easy stuff.

I have to send out a huge thanks to Bill Waters, who took me thru the whole engine build. He made the mistake of answering my 1st email about building the 454 I'd just picked up. From there Bill had great advise every step of the way, from the crank, rods, pistons, to building the heads, and everything else that went into this build. We have probably a hundred emails between us, from early morning, to late at night, every day since day 1 of this engine build. Bill also had to deal with my very stubborn demand that this engine look very &quot;factory correct&quot;....so no headers, aftermarket anything.....not easy to do when someone wants to go fast, but look stock!!

Some engine details: Steel Scat crank, H-beam rods, forged low dome pistons, block and heads both decked, Chris Straub hyd roller, with Morel roller lifters, Cloyes true roller chain, and a Hays steel flywheel.

Heads: 781 open chamber heads, were completely redone, with bigger valves 1.88/2.19...pocket ported, Scorpion rockers, custom length push rods.....long story in itself. Bill was very patient as I learned the process for correctly measuring rods.

Then topped off with a 163 GM intake, and 780 Holley. Factory exhaust manifolds, but a free breathing ex system, to be determined at a later date.

Here's a few shots of the almost finished engine. It should make the little Nova move a bit better than the 155hp, 6cyl thats in the car now.

The M22 and rear are ready to go too. Not sure when the new drivetrain will go into the car, but it may be sooner than originally planned.

Yes, it's getting the factory cast iron ex manifolds with smog. It will look like an L-78/COPO engine comp. Sort of a COPO Nova thing, with no engine size emblems on the body. Plain jane, big power plant/4 speed, 12 bolt.

I have no plans to drag race the Nova. This is just a toy to goof around with, but if I'm at a car show at a drag strip, I'd take it for a spin down the track and see what happens. I just prefer the factory correct look.

I have 2 cars with Centerforce clutches. One has a pretty bad chattering issue. The other one is ok. I just decided to try something different.

Bill Rose

The plan was to drive the Nova around most of the summer, then start pulling the car apart. Well the plan has changed. I decided to start the project now.

First step, pull the battery out, and remove the rad cap, then drain the water. Then I started pulling the nose off. I also removed the gas tank and all the fuel lines, because I wanted all the gas out of my shop for safety reasons.

I got way more done than I planned for one afternoon/evening. The trans is out, after a major fluid spill. The motor is ready to come out....probably tomorrow evening.

lots more to do, but it's a great start. I'm beat!

I made a lot of progress today. Got the rear axle out, and the sub-frame. The goal here is to get the body ready for the rotisserie, so I can flip the body upside down, and get all the undercoating off everything. I hate undercoating!! All I have left to do, is to remove the rear bumper, and it should be ready. The frame is almost ready to go to the sand blaster. I just have to pull the control arms off. Here's a few more pics of the progress.

I haven't posted progress pis in a while. I got the frame out, it's blasted. I also have the body work on the frame done. I also have most of the front end parts painted. Still have to work on the control arms. Have to fix some minor pitting, then press all the bushings in. Here's some pics of the progress.

This is the original idler arm. Got all the paint off it, and detailed it. It's still tight.

Actually Mark, this one has been easy so far. It's been fun stuff like building the motor, trans, rear, and front end. The frame will be painted by tomorrow evening, then I can assemble the chassis. If it was like work, I wouldn't be doing it, I guess.

The worst is yet to come/undercoating removal.....yikes! But Albert is loaning me his rotisserie for the project. I hope to have that done in a couple weeks. Lots of car shows coming up, so I won't be able to get as much done. I'll keep plugging away until it's done.

Thanks for the feedback/more pics to come.

Albert was able to paint his wheels because I was able to get my newly painted frame out of the booth, because it finally stopped raining.

Well, I'm on my way now. Lots of progress, and on to the &quot;funner&quot; stuff. Got the frame painted and started assembling it. I need some hardware for the assembly, that never got here after ordering it last week. I called and made a stink....it will be here tomorrow.

I'm gonna take a few days off and take the Elky to an AACA show this weekend, then back to business, finishing up the frame.

The rotisserie is also available now, so the body undercoating removal will begin next week. Here's some shots of the progress.

Ok, back home from the AACA show, and back to the Nova. Lots of stuff done. Pretty much got the chassis finished. Just a few odds and ends to finish up. Now on to the body/undercoating removal. I'm not looking forward to this job, but I hate undercoating so it's all coming off. With the trailer still hooked up to the truck, I went over to Alberts to pick up the rotisserie. Got the body mounted on the rotisserie today, and the undercoating removal will begin soon.

Thanks for the positive feedback folks. I'll keep adding progress pics if anyone is interested.

Lots of progress. I got the majority of the undercoating off. I still have some small areas to clean up a bit more. Mostly it was removed with fire and scraping. Then cleaned it up with a DA, and wire wheel on the grinder. Also used some paint remover in tight areas.

I'm very happy with the condition of the underbody. You never know what you'll find when removing undercoating, but this car was 99% rust free. Just a couple areas of surface rust, which I'll fix with some body work. Also got the firewall stripped. Found a couple numbers under the black paint. Also found big check mark. Not sure what that was for. Here's a few pics.

I still have to remove, and redo the seam sealer.

I was wondering what that mark could mean Marlin. Now that you mention it, it does look like a big V. I've never seen this before. I'll probably put the codes back when I'm done, and I should know what the V means. Makes sense to me.

Hi ,very nice work on the car so far.... I have a couple of questions. Did you replace the a arm bushings and then paint them? What did you coat your drag link with to protect it? Are the washers on the upper a-arms bare metal or painted black ?
Thanks Rob

I prime and paint one coat on the control arms, then install the bushings. Then I mask off the bushings and repaint the black. The drag link has cast iron paint on it. The upper a-arm bushings should be natural or nickel plated. I used a phos paint, but I'll change them before the project is finished.

It's been a busy couple weeks. Got the rest of the bottom striped of all the undercoating. Then sanded it one last time. Then sand blasted the tight areas, that I couldn't reach with the sander..

Yesterday I stuck the whole thing in the trailer, and took it around the corner to Alberts shop, to prime, and paint the bottom in his spray booth. It came out great. Tomorrow it comes back here, and the Elky goes in the trailer for GM Carlisle. When I get back, I hope to start the assembly process.

I also found a tack that fits the factory dash bezel. I got the dash all cleaned up, and reassembled/ready to go back in the car.

Lots of progress since getting back from the Maryland Chevelle Show. Got the exhaust manifolds back from alum skinning. I'll paint them tonight, and put them on the motor.

I also picked up a shinny new stainless steel gas tank at the show. It's a very nice piece from Ground-Up. It fit like the original.

Picked up the rear leaf springs at the Md show, disassembled, stripped and sanded, then painted and reassembled them, and bolted them to the rear.

It's the M22W, with the 1969 shaft design Kurt.

I wanted a flatter satin black on this car. I also wanted to do it with spray cans, since the frame is small, and I'm not painting the car, so I wanted less paint flying around, like you have with a gun. I also wanted something I could touch up easily. So after looking at several types of satin black, I decided to go with SEM trim paint.

So today was a big day. I had all day to get something done. Decided to stick the motor and trans in. The motor went right in/no issues except it's a tight space for a Chevy big block.

Then it was time to stick the trans in. It shouldn't really be a big deal, just put it up there and push.....right? Well I spent 2 hours trying to drive it in that last 1/2&quot; .......no way it was going to go in. I finally decided to pull it back out and look for the problem. Well I found why.

The cheap piece of $hit throwout bearing fell apart. I can believe Summit would sell this piece of junk. My fault for not paying close attention to the bearing that cam with the clutch package. Lesson learned I guess. See pic below. The bearing had a cheap tin foil ring pressed on it, to hold it in place, instead of a steel one piece bearing.

Lesson: Don't use the cheap bearing that comes with the clutch kit!!!

Steve....The clutch kit is a Ram. It's not a thousand dollar clutch, but it's a good street clutch. It was $400 for the clutch, pres plate, and &quot;throwout bearing&quot; I sent Summit pictures, and let them know how much time it cost me. We'll see what happens.

Those are made by Luk. Not perfect though. It's getting tough to find a throw out bearing that does not have a plastic collar.

I believe you can still get a throwout bearing from GM. I bought mine at HBC. Here is the link:

http://www.heartbeatcitycamaro.com/store/product/15144/Camaro-Clutch-throw-out-bearing-AC-1969/

You might want to check with the parts department at your local GM dealership. The price maybe slightly lower. Hope this helps.

Thanks Sal, but I already have a Centerforce bearing ordered. I should have it on Monday. I have 2 Centerforce bearings on other cars, with no issues.

Lots to do in the mean time. It took all day today to do the fairly simple job, painting the metal parts of the dash, clove comp, ash tray, etc.

I got a few more projects done on the Nova. The metal parts of the dash are always fun to paint. Had to redo it 3 times before the paint would stick, and not fisheye, but it came out nice.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3841_zps8cacc055.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3841_zps8cacc055.jpg.html)

I got the new shifter installed. Not a simple job with the Aurogear M22. The case is heftier, so the bracket for the shifter doesn't work without mods.....but I got some good advise from Ed Hartnett...done!

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3853_zps81b06a95.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3853_zps81b06a95.jpg.html)

I also decided to redo the trunk. Too many scratches for me to deal with. It looks blotchy from the camera flash....It came out nice/looks great.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3868_zpsc5a5cca1.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3868_zpsc5a5cca1.jpg.html)

Also got the heater core in. So the whole unit can go in now.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3867_zps3de1c136.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3867_zps3de1c136.jpg.html)

I bought a new throwout bearing!!!...One that I didn't have to &quot;throwout&quot;..........The M22 is in, the shifter works fine, and some good news, the drive shaft works. I just have to restore it, and put new u-joints in it. The back u-joint has to be 2 sizes to fit the Moser rear yoke.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3863_zps38f8c917.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3863_zps38f8c917.jpg.html)

The shifter is thru the floor, but I have to enlarge the hole, and add the boot and trim plates.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3875_zps0c02d8f1.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3875_zps0c02d8f1.jpg.html)

Also got the rear window sill repainted, new package tray, and back seat divider, and insulation.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3876_zps18495c3c.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3876_zps18495c3c.jpg.html)

Took the day off to check out Super Chevy/Maple Grove.

This is some of this weeks progress

I blasted the steering wheel with glass beads, to scuff it enough for the paint to stick.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3886_zpsae716207.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3886_zpsae716207.jpg.html)

Painted wheel/came out great!

<a href="http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3902_zpsa7b42827.jpg.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3902_zpsa7b42827.jpg</a>

I decided to put the hood grills on the car, much like a 69 Copo Chevelle would have. Lots of careful measuring and remeasuring and more remeasuring, then I got the drill out and did it!!! Thats it for any exterior mods.
http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3882_zpsc5c3aa20.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3882_zpsc5c3aa20.jpg.html)

The progress continues, although it took a detour this week. I wasn't planning on doing any body/paint work, but I had a little mishap, and dinged the hood. Not a problem really. I got some of the base coat with the car, and it's Sherwin Williams, the brand I always use. Dents fixed, and will be painted when I can get some booth time. The hood is scuffed. It just needs some color on a couple spots, then a couple coats of clear......Then sanding and buffing. So far it looks good.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3903_zps30939242.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3903_zps30939242.jpg.html)

I got the radiator support and inner fenders done. Had to do some pitting repair, but nothing too terrible.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3919_zpsa004a88d.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3919_zpsa004a88d.jpg.html)

I also got the whole smog system on the engine. All went well, except the the JUNK repro pump bracket. Luckily Albert's parts supply had a real one in stock.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3917_zpsac7ea481.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3917_zpsac7ea481.jpg.html)

I also got the driveshaft installed. That took about 5 mins.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3923_zps0715d431.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3923_zps0715d431.jpg.html)

Then I decided to blast the battery tray. Not sure what paint was on it, but the blast cabinet didn't even scratch it. So I broke out the paint remover. I think it was painted with the same paint they use on the bottom of the space shuttle.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_3915_zpsc8fa73f9.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_3915_zpsc8fa73f9.jpg.html)

I have some custom wire harnesses being made by American Autowire. They are great to work with, even if you're a pain in the a$$ like me, and want special wiring done. Donny is making me a harness that has all the plugs for the Shiftworks in dash tach.

Gonna take a break and head out to the Ohio Chevelle show. Lots to do when I get back.

It's not missing Paul, it was eliminated. The tail housing on the Autogear M22's is a larger diameter than a stock Muncie, so the u-bolt doesn't work/ too small. The mounting plate has been drilled for the Autogear trans. So it has regular 3/8&quot; bolts holding the mounting plate, much like a Chevelle set-up. The round part of the plate had to be re-ground to fit up against the larger diameter housing too........good eye though!! I got good advise from Ed Hartnett in Phily/the Muncie guru.

Yes Dan, we'll see you Thurs......looking forward to this one......big time!!

I haven't posted progress pics in a few weeks. Been busy though. I also had a few car shows to get thru.

I put a ding in the hood, so I had a little fixit job to do. Dent fixed, color on the repair, cleared the whole hood, color sanded and buffed. No sign of the dent, and the moldings are back on the hood. Thanks Albert for the spray booth time.

She should be happy I got the fenders out of there!! There's a plan in the works for a new building out back, just to store cars, and all the crap associated with them. That probably won't happen until the Nova is done/hopefully sometime before it gets too cold. I'll have to switch from car mode, to building mode somehow.

Realistically, I probably won't get to it until early spring. There's no huge hurry. Lots to do on the Nova, and I have to move the single car garage that's there now.

Yea Dan, I'd like to see the 71 Chevelle back in my possession. That's a nice Chevelle, and someone offered me a boat load of cash for it........and I caved!!!

Been pretty on the busy on the Nova..... I got the seat belts out and dismantled them, cleaned um up, and reassembled/screwed them down.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4018_zpsdcbf83e9.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4018_zpsdcbf83e9.jpg.html)

I also got the front bumper, parking lights, brackets, ready to go back on the car.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4019_zps136a5c70.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4019_zps136a5c70.jpg.html)

I spent a lot of time getting the carpet down. The crappy repro carpets are a ball buster, but with a couple cans of spray glue, a heat gun and a lot of 4 letter words, it came out ok. Also got the back seat in.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4021_zps15f9a779.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4021_zps15f9a779.jpg.html)

Then there's the dash, steering column, radio, glove comp, and all the wireing to make it all work.....hopefully!!

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4025_zps32f0fecc.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4025_zps32f0fecc.jpg.html)

I also got the rear bumper, brackets lights, license plate/fuel door etc done.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4031_zps92eb2782.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4031_zps92eb2782.jpg.html)

The last 2 projects are to get the nose back on the car, after repainting the insides black. Then the exhaust system, which is ordered and should be here in 3 weeks. Then the most nerve racking part, firing up the new motor.

Tom did more of a cosmetic restoration. He had the car painted and cleaned up under the hood.

I decided to completely change the drivetrain, add disc brakes, etc. I also wanted all the undercoating gone, which meant it had to go on the rotisserie.

I bought the Nova for a project, as a low milage survivor that already had all the body and paint work done.

I also replaced items that a normal person would have left, like the roof, bumpers, carpet, etc........

Working on these cars is not work. I'm not real good at sitting around, so it's good to have a project like this to keep busy.

I spent 3 hrs last night trying to figure out why the brake lights wouldn't work, after installing all new wire harnesses. The brake like switch had power, and worked, the bulbs were new, etc.....turned out to be the cheap chinese turn signal switch.

Next project, getting the nose out, and back on the car.

Made some more progress over the last couple weeks. Finished up the interior, put an oil and water temp gauge in, for the upcoming fire the new motor party!!

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4063_zps74598948.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4063_zps74598948.jpg.html)

I got the fenders out. They needed some work. I repainted all the areas where the bolts had scratched the paint. Then sanded and buffed out the paint on both fenders.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4064_zpscbecad51.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4064_zpscbecad51.jpg.html)

I installed the wheel wells, before the fenders.

Installing the fenders. I put an old sheet down to prevent scratching. Then when the fender is in place, I remove it.

Here's a couple shots of the car as it is now.

http://i533.photobucket.com/albums/ee335/wrrose/100_4092_zpsa0ed0a63.jpg (http://s533.photobucket.com/user/wrrose/media/100_4092_zpsa0ed0a63.jpg.html)

Next, I will get the exhaust installed, then the hood, and front bumper, headlight bezels, which I'm painting. I also will be sanding and buffing the doors and quarters, like I did with the fenders.

Then it's time to fire the motor. If that goes well, the Nova's a finished project.

Thanks for all the feedback. I still have some work to do, but the end is near........I think....

Took a step backward last night. I made the mistake of putting 5 gals of gas in the brand new stainless steel tank. In the morning, there was a strong smell of gas in my shop, and a 3&quot; round puddle of gas on the floor. There's a pin hole right on the bottom of the tank. No dents or scratches, looks like a flaw in the steel. So the battle begins with the vendor. The tank is now out of the car, sitting outside.

I'm not sure who made it Dan. The vendor I got it from is standing behind it., and replacing it free of charge. They are bringing the new tank to the Raceway Park fall swap, this weekend. I can't be there, but a friend of mine will be picking it up for me.

I decided to get the OEM tank, and I believe it is a Spectra tank.

It's just a tube of clear silicone they give you with the system. I didn't use it because it takes time to get the different pipes together and adjusted so it all fits right. Then when it's all done, I end up readjusting it a couple more times. I figured the silicone would harden long before I'm happy with the fit, so I didn't use it. If I find that the seams leak, I'll pull them apart one at a time and use the sealer.

Funny you mentioned that Tom. I was just thinking about that.....I'm ready. I put the new gas tank in. It just needs some fuel in it, and the engine also needs water/anti-freeze, and I think I'm ready to give it a shot, and see what happens.

I like to go over the whole car and be sure every thing is done, bolts tight, fuel lines, brake lines, etc. Then it's just a matter of a few different kinds of prescription quaaludes to keep the stress level to a minimum.....and turn the key.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. It's always good to get a little encouragement.

We had a few glitches to work out. The tach, water temp gauge and volt reg didn't work. Today I got the tach and temp gauge fixed. It was just a careless mistake I made, but that issue is behind me now. I'm waiting for a new volt reg to get here, and that should be good to go. Then just a front end alignment, and it's ready to test drive.

I'm very happy with the motor. Excellent throttle response, and it just feels strong, with lots of torque. It should be a blast....can't wait!!

X2, especially if you used the rubber shock mounts, just take a jumper wire to it and try that.

Thanks Jason/Mike....I don't have the regulator mounted on rubber, but I also don't have a ground wire on it. I always assumed it was grounded just with the 3 mounting screws. I'll look into that today.

Someone pointed out, in the video, the generator light wasn't on when we first fired the motor, but it started coming on dim, then lit up bright. So we were thinking the regulator took a dump in the first couple mins, that the engine was running. I was more concerned with the temp gauge not working.

I also have the original 69 dated reg, that was working fine before I dismantled the car. I was gonna try that regulator last night, but I had drained the radiator, to add anti-freeze, and couldn't run it.....I'll pick up the anti-freeze today, and check out the regulators, WITH ground wires.

FWIW I've not had good luck with the new Delco regulators, actually no luck at all. They just didn't seam to function like the old ones. I had to switch to a solid state and replaced the cover with the old Delco one. I have no idea why, but after five or six pegging to full charge after a few weeks, I quit trying...

The regulator is now working. My fault. You guys were right. There are 2 ground wires in the front light harness, near the left side headlight. One should go to one of the 3 screws that hold the reg to the fire wall. I had them both on the horn relay screw. I have 14.6 volts now. It is a new Delco reg, but this one is working fine, if it's grounded correctly.

Yep, the punch list is short Ryan. Just a front end alignment, and I should be ready for the 1st test drive.

It should move under it's own power, but I still have it up on blocks. We're looking at a week long rain event, so it may have to sit for a while.

This may be the reason my Nova isn't charging enough to run the lights very long after dark. I'm fine all day long but night driving is killing the battery. I had both of those grounds fastened to the core support. I'm assuming one fastens to the voltage regulator and the other to the horn relay? I had the Alternator tested and have a new Voltage regulator and new horn relay...

I wound up replacing the regulator. I put one of the ground wires on the reg, and it worked briefly. Then quit completely and it was a Delco regulator. I replaced it with a Standard brand, and grounded it like the Delco. So far the Standard one is good.

The Delco reg was all over the place. Sometimes it was charging 16 volts and then a min later it was doing nothing. Then back to 15....etc

...and yes, the other ground I put on the horn relay screw.

Ok, this is it. Had it out for the front end alignment today. It actually moves under it own power. Hasn't done that for a while. This build has been a lot of fun. I will be putting another set of wheels together for it. I'll be going with white steelies and cheater slicks on the rear, and a somewhat skinny wheel/tire combo up front. Not sure which wheels yet, up front. Probably a 15&quot; X 6&quot; of some sort, with black wall bias ply's....

I appreciate all the great advise, comments, emails, pm's and phone calls, over the past 6 months. I'm new to Nova's so I had a lot to learn, but it was one of the more pleasurable builds I've done. Now I have a new garage/storage building to build. I'll be thrilled if that goes as well as the Nova project went.

Here's a couple final shots for those who aren't sick of looking at it yet.

The Delco cover bolted on fine. As a matter of fact, the Standard was the exact same regulator as the Delco......cept it works!!

Paul, I looked at both Grady's and Riches Nova's with 15&quot; fronts/14&quot; rears, and they look good. I'm assuming the slicks are a bit taller than a reg tire, so they are probably about the same diameter. I'm also concerned with the Cragars hitting the calipers up front. The 15's would have more room. There's not a lot of back spacing choices with Cragars. I also like the front to sit up a bit more, and fill out the wheel well.

By the way, I love the tow tabs. I'm thinking of putting the pins thru the holes, but I'm not sure what they look like.

Bill Rose
10-28-2013, 01:58 AM
I got the Cragars with cheater slicks, and the skinnies up front. Had the car out for the maiden voyage today, breaking in all the new parts, like the Moser rear, trans, clutch, and the engine of course. The Nova is real hoot to drive now. It has some serious power and torque. I was taking it easy on the new motor, getting the rings seated, etc....

The new power steering and brakes are great too. It's tight, handles great, but has a smooth ride. I have a couple bugs to get out of it but simple stuff. Here's a shot with the new wheels.

Don't get me started Dan!! The new garage is suppose to be easy. I've been building stuff since I was 10 yrs old......Way easier than a Nova restoration.....right?? Not!!!

That could be a whole new thread Dan, dealing with our so called &quot;government&quot; !!!!!!

Trying to get a building permit to build a perfectly legal, (everything within the building codes, and zoning laws) garage, on the land I've owned for 30 yrs. You would think I was building a school for handicapped children. Stay tuned!!

You're right Sam. I'm not crazy about how they look, hanging down as much as they do. But it's certainly a possibility.

Bill...I would suggest trying the &quot;Harrell Style&quot; spring clamps...basically 2 pieces of flat steel stock that fits over the springs to stop wheel hop.
