So,..........My grandson ended up with the "Old" Nova, and.....after driving the car around for two years he decided that he wants to upgrade it with a Heidt's front end.........add the A/C unit I bought (but never put in) back around 2000.....add some updated Gauges........maybe some more up to date pro touring type rims......and a more up to date Stereo System......and I think I will put in a more realistic camshaft while it's out.........So.....That's the New "Old" Project....By the way....the car ran a best of 10.92 @ 126 on drag radials in it's present form (on Spray).....

kwhizz

Never ran it on H.P.........Too much fun spraying (and trying to break it).......The camshaft was ground specifically for the car and spray by Comp Cams......Fast Burn Heads ....1.6 roller rockers.....700 R4.....had a 3.90 rear in the car and it would run 11.20's......changed to a 3.42 and it went right into the 10's....

There's so many different Chevy II aftermarket subframes out there but the Chris Alston Chassisworks unit is very, very nice. I've seen many from other manufacturers that used a crazy number of thickness shims where the upper braces meet the top of the firewall.

A little more background on the car......I spent a couple of years playing around at the Drag Strip with this car .....mainly from 2002 thru 2007.......I had the car dialed in to run consistantly in the low 11's and high 10's............Now, after getting the car to run that good, I was told not to come back until I put a roll bar in the car as it was well below the 11.50 requirement for that Safety feature.........But....I didn't want to cut the car up and do that.....so.....I basically just put the car in the garage and it just sat.....I drove it on the street a couple of times and took the cold Nitrous Plugs out and put normal Heat Range plugs in........and it sat......
So......In 2007 I trailered the car down to the Super Car Reunion and decided to run it down the track....The crew at the track told me not to run the car on spray......and I wasn't going to.........LOL....But.....When I pulled the car up to the line that little troublemaker sitting on my shoulder (Well...Just say'in....).......so......As soon as I left the line I hit the NOS button and figured I would just make one run and put the car back in the trailer...........So.......I was looking to run in the high 10's.....when I got my time slip it showed that I ran an 11.45......WTF..........

I really never drove the car again as it just sat in the garage.......on my Grandson's 16th Birthday I gave him the car and he seldom drove it also............So.....As I am pulling the car apart today getting ready to pull the engine out.....I pulled the spark plugs out to get the headers off.......And......I find that 2 of the plugs had the electrodes burned off........Duhhh!!......I never put the cold plugs back in and the nitrous took the electrodes out......with the camshaft in the car it was hard to tell it wasn't firing on all 8..........Now I know why it slowed down............

Update.........In buying the Heidt's Super Ride set-up.......and this not being the first unit they produced......You would think they would have the kit's engineering down to a point where it would be able to be assembled by a first grader..........LOL.......Guess I think with today's technology that would be a simple thing to do...........I'm being overly critical, but.....If someone was doing this for the first time, they should be able to follow the instructions and have no issues.........Not the case here.....
Again.....Just a few simple things.....The sway bar mounting blocks don't fit where they are supposed to because of the Weld fillet in that area.....Rework the blocks to fit.....the lower control arms are slightly different, they are not marked left or right, the instructions don't say which way they go....and the picture again is very un-clear.....so....I call and get a tech.....and asked him which way they go....he told me to follow the instructions......I say .O.K......you get a set of instructions and show me where it tells which way to install them......after reading the instructions he said........Humm!!....It doesn't say..........LOL........But,,He tells me to put the slightly longer side to the back......I said....O.K.......That's the way I installed them, But....How would a first timer know that......Then in mounting the sway bar links.....They were hitting the lower control arms......Called again thinking I had the wrong Sway Bar.....The Tech asked me if I had the correct bar.......I said how would I know that.....LOL..........Got nowhere there and ended up cutting and modifying the links to get everything to work.........and the last thing was in mounting the Calipers to the Heidt brackets....They are Wilwood calipers and need to be shimmed to center the caliper with the rotor......couldn't get the calipers to bolt on straight.....in looking deeper I found that there was another weld fillet that was into the caliper mounting surface that canted the caliper sideways as it was tightened.....had to get in and grind the weld away so the caliper would fit.........Again.........Poor Q.C., Instructions, and Engineering for the first time installer..........
Here are some pics as we went along.........

Yep............Have to back track a little.......Just to go back to a subject that still bothers me is the Instructions and Quality in the Heidt's front end just flat out sucks........Besides all the Quality issues......their instructions are terrible.......so....we buy the front end for a 66 Nova.....Simple right.....LOL.....As I get ready to put the engine in I notice that it doesn't look like the stock Nova pan will work........call them and they said I was right...need to change to a rear sump......O.K.......Why don't you put that in your instructions so I could plan accordingly................and......I go to hook up the steering.......My old Hooker Super Comps are a no go.....New Headers.........Get all that stuff done and moved into the interior.

.......Dakota Digital VHX gauges..........What a treat to actually get something that actually exceeds your expectations......The Gauges and Fan controller Fit and are simple to hook ......Great Job Dakota Digital

When I went to start the engine......the MSD box was dead........Ended up putting in a Pertronix plug and play Distributor.........It's going for the front end alignment on Thursday.....still got a bunch of loose ends but the list is getting shorter....

What aftermarket AC unit are you using, and how do you like it (fit of underdash unit and quality)?

Boy! I hear ya' on the instructions not being any good and those last couple of issues. I'm real close to finishing up a frame-off on another Olds ('72 442 350 4-speed) and I've encountered some of the same type problems you are experiencing. Oldsmobile stuff just isn't produced in the mass quantity that Chevy stuff is, so "building" one has it's challenges. I'd say the "worst" was a new wiring harness being assembled wrong---not MY assembly, but the actual harness had two black wires backwards at the pig-tail junction. Your car looks GREAT and keep at it. Sometimes it is hard to stay focused when "NEW" items turn out to be worse that the ones you are replacing!

Great work as usual Ken,I am digging the gauges alot. I have always wanted a plain jane 66/67 Chevy II with skinnie and big chevy ralleys and disc brake center caps, some reason that vision does something for me.....not that Torque Thrusts dont.LOL Either way I would love to have one of those in my collection.Greta job.

Update............Seems that as Kevin was driving the car it seemed to be smoking more and more.......I thought it was the valve seals .........so.......when we started to check it out and after pulling the PCV hose and valve and starting the engine.........It was obvious that by the blow-by coming out the valve cover there were so other issues at play here.......This motor was built a few years ago but it didn't have that many miles on it........Just some drag strip miles.........Anyhow.....we were planning on doing a LS swap in the near future ....anyhow........here's what we found after pulling the engine out.....None of the wrist pin retainer rings were put in by the engine shop that went thru the engine and the wrist pin decided to take a "Walk"........Darn.........Gonna get it sleeved and put back together till the LS shows up......

Yep..........We sleeved the cylinder and ended up basically spending twice as much as I wanted to because we are going to put a LS engine in the car anyway........the rebuild got a little out of control......But.....It's all good now and the car runs really strong........
