View Full Version : Project COPO cleanup

well, its been about 7 years since I finished the resto on my COPO Chevelle. Since it has been finished I have never been happy with the canshaft in the mnotor..ts a little big..sounds mean, but does'nt run worth a crap!....so I had Chris Straub grind me a up custom solid roller more along the lines of a stock cam rather than the "racey "cam that was in it. I suppose I could change the cam with the motor in the car, but I think I will pull the motor so I can clean and repaint some stuff, replace the repro exhaust manifolds that were temporary ( 6 years ago) as one of the originals had broken while assembly was going on...repaint the motor as it is peeling and showing some small leak/seepage around the gaskets. Here are some pics of the first day..more to follow:

If you use an automotive grade DTM primer and topcoat with a automotive enamel it will last a long time. Use a spray gun instead of the cheap rattle cans.

302moz
01-12-2014, 08:50 PM
The best primer to use is SPI brand epoxy primer reduced with alittle thinner . We get everything prepped and spray a couple of thin coats ,let it set a few hours then top coat. Spray it thin so the grain of the cast still shows. Blocks never had a lot of paint from the plant. Also use light grey orange covers better.Epoxy goes down first on all bare metal surfaces that we do. Even under all filler.

A question comes to my mind when I see the pictures. First it is a great job and it looks good.

But I wonder how they did paint them at the factory. Was the water pump mounted when they painted the engine and if so wouldn't it then sort of mask parts of the cam chain cover?

Just wondering...

Jan

olredalert
02-03-2014, 01:42 PM
----Waterpump was mounted as well as intake. On earlier short waterpump engines you can tell the waterpumps were on the engines as they had no paint on the backsides.
The Tonawanda factory had masks that were made out of pressed cardboard. They were attached to the aluminum intake prior to the paint. At the end of that process the masks were placed in a bin and rotated back to the beginning. The cardboard would get worn and sometimes edges would be broken off and thats why (generally) on survivor aluminum intake big-blocks you will see some overspray. When a mask became too worn or get too much overspray on it, it would get tossed. As well, sometimes the mask wouldnt be attached correctly and more paint would get on the intake than intended. The aluminum intakes were never uniformly oversprayed or fogged along the edges as is frequently seen.
I saw a picture of something that I was told was a mask a long time ago, and many of us feel this is the method, but I would love to hear from someone involved.......Bill S

Verne_Frantz

Bill,
Here you can see the evidence of the mask used when this manifold was painted. Sharp edges rather than a fogged edge.

I was always leery of using the plate, but I have a lot of friends including my engine builder who uses it all the time. I ended up setting my engine in and had no issues at all. I can't remember the numbers but if you add up the strength of four 5/16" bolts......they will hold a lot, even in aluminum.

Anyway.....your project looks great Albert. Can't wait to see/hear it in Ohio.
