View Full Version : 2015 MCACN Hemi Cuda and Challenger converts

This is a early call out for 2015 MCACN. The goal is to get all the Hemi Cuda and Hemi Challenger converts we can for the largest gathering of them ever. I have no idea how many have ever been in one place at the same time but with all the attention on the recent sale of one this should be a great display. If you have one you are invited. Please get ahold of Bob Ashton or me. It really is a chance to be a part of something special and the car world will appreciate the chance to see a bunch of them in one spot. We had 19 ZL1's a couple years ago, can we beat that ?

The 12 1971 E74 'Cudas - including the third French export car in a pic from the 1970s. Car no longer exists, but has been "cloned". It was also white with black billboards originally like the other white French export.

Incredibly, a whopping 5 of the 1970 Hemicuda convertible were TX9 BLACK.

Believe me...nobody will be disappointed with our HEMI Anniversary display this year. 1964-1971 is covered with the best of the best and some trul unexpected treasures.

BTW; we do have the '71 Hemi 'Cuda convertible that was recently sold by our Title Sponsor The Mecum Auction Company. It will greet you right up front.

How many 1971 Hemi Challenger convertibles are still around?

I know there is a real one here in my town. The owner (he's had it since the late 70's) says it was one of 9 built, and one of 3 still known to exist.

njsteve
12-25-2014, 07:51 PM
Easy answer. Zero. There were no 1971 hemi-equipped Challenger ragtops built by Dodge. The 426 Hemi was only available in the 1970 Challenger R/T ragtop. The reason was that there was no Challenger R/T convertible option available in 1971. You could get a big block in a base Challenger ragtop (the 383/300 horsepower engine) but you could not get an R/T ragtop, therefore no 426 Hemi in a 1971 ragtop Challenger. So, the 9 number was the total 1970 models for US production and 3 more for export.

So your buddy's car must be a 1970 if it is a real car. Got any photos? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Thanks for the info! I haven't seen the car in a few years, I didn't remember if it was a 1970 or 71, so I guess you answered that for me <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

I took a bunch of pictures at the time, I'll see if I can find them and upload them in the next few days! He actually had a pair, a hardtop and vert, both real '70 Hemi Challengers. I don't know him well but we talked at the show for awhile as it was a very small, local show and my dad and I had never seen the cars before. He was extremely nice and said he doesn't take the cars out much. The convertible was originally sublime but he repainted it long ago in plum crazy to match his hardtop.

So do we know how many of the 1970 Hemi Challenger convertibles are accounted for?

njsteve

I believe there was one that was a sublime green ragtop. Are you sure he didn't sell it a few years ago? I recall someone telling me about a (then) recent acquisition of a sublime hemi ragtop a while back.

72heavychevy
12-27-2014, 01:47 AM
He could have, I have not seen the car or talked with him in a few years. I only saw the car a couple times and he was very sentimental to it, but he was getting up there in age. Do you have any more info about that car you heard about? The car was in the Kansas City area if that rings any bells.

There were two sublime challengers built.

and 69hurst you are right, there was only 1 '71 cuda built with billboards, I was incorrect in saying the export French cars had billboards.http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/12/full-3497-19974-limelight70.jpg

Well, unfortunately I cannot find the pictures I took at the show a few years back. I had a hard-drive failure a couple years ago and I'm afraid the pictures might have gone with it. However, I did find one picture of the car online. I immediately knew it was his car because of the display board you can see in the background.

Yes, that's what was told to me. It had a good quality respray from the 1980's but you could still see the Limelight color in the trunk and door gaps. He had a hardtop '70 Challenger in Plum Crazy and painted this to match.

I haven't seen the car in a few years so I'm not sure if he has it or not, njsteve (from above posts) thought he had heard of a car being found that was originally sublime so that's why all of this came into question. If he does still have it I bet it's still purple, he had no intentions of painting or restoring the car at the time because it was in good driver condition.

I think the record is 9. That was in 2005 at the Mopars at the Strip show in Las Vegas. At the time it was a huge deal, but you're actually getting very close to tripling that record!

I'm sure there are folks who've seen more than I have, but I went through my list and I've had the good fortune of laying eyes on 27 of 'em firsthand. However, there are a couple attending this upcoming show that even I've never seen before, they rarely come out, so this really is something special.

The albums really should be with the car. Back in 1987 when I sold the car to Otis Chandler, neither he nor Greg Joseph seemed all that interested in the photos. So I kept them to keep them from being thrown away.

Well, I do have a daughter in college who could use some help with her student loan. (and it's a state school so it wouldn't be that expensive) <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I even have an extra broadcast sheet! - the car had several of them. (this is a low-res black and white scan of the original color sheet so it doesn't get copied too easily)

LOL.

Sadly, I don't think I can go this year due to the aforementioned smarty-pants daughter who wants to continue to attend college. I can't give her too much grief, though. She is double majoring with an additional minor - and she does have a 3.7 GPA going into her Junior year). And she plays rugby - quite a switch from her former HS cheerleading days!
