This car is turning out great. At first Barry wanted to paint the car but I talked him into leaving the old acrylic paint and just give the car a buff and detail. The paint is all cracked and checked with a couple of dings here and there but from 10 feet it looks like glass. If you seen that bumper before you wouldn't think it was the same one. The car is going to have a lot of patina with a little sleeper L79 with 4:10s in the rear.

Updating what I thought was correct until I found this in the packet from Kim Howie where he had the 5th owner of this 1965 Chevelle L79 write down all about what he knew on the car since he was related to 1st owner who got killed in hunting accident about 8 months after buying the car new. All owners were from same area were friends and the 5th owner Jerry Doolitle (cousin to 1st owner) who bought car 9-14-1973 and owned for 32 1/2 years until Kim Howie bought it as found. The 2nd owner Steve Romsey had car painted Black Pearl by man named Wayne Larson in 1969 and showed car at show in daily driven class took 2nd place. So the paint is from 1969 and still in great shape since it was in a heated garage all those years even though it sat until found. Jerry drove the car with his cousin in April 1965 with only 27 miles on the car. He just had to buy the car back from his friend in 1973 since it meant so much to him. Sure is a great survivor car and great story looking better the more Jason does cleaning car up and putting all the parts back on that were there with the car all those years. A lot of the original license plates were behind the 1986 plate that was on the bumper of the car when Jerry parked it including this 1972 plate on the bottom. Keep up the great work Jason it looks so nice and will be a great nostalgic car to take to shows that will draw attention. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/10/full-3814-17367-documentation_from_owner_2.jpg

Kim is trying to get the picture from 1969 of the show after guy had it painted that Black Pearl color and picture of both brothers from the early days standing by open hood of the car. Yes it is the paint from back then it is a 10 foot car but you get close you can see imperfections but it sure looks great for a car painted that long ago. Jason spent a lot of time buffing to get the dirt out of the paint from sitting all those years in that garage but at least it survived as a great car that will turn heads at car shows.

Kim Howie just sent me picture Jerry Doolittle brother 1st owner and the last owner of 32 1/2 years at age 17 when his brother street raced the car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/10/full-3814-17482-jerry_doolittle.jpg

When Kim picked car up from Jerry he snapped picture of that one above Jerry would not give it up but he still had original dual snorkel way you see it in the picture when they raced it with snorkels knocked off and holes cut in base to let air in better only extra hole was when I ordered new reproduction snorkel Jason took the one tube off this original to fix it correct compared to way they making repro ones. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/10/full-3814-17483-dual_snorkel_002.jpg

What a great project. I’m glad Barry decided to leave the car as is and just put it back together. This way Barry and his son can enjoy the car. The day 2 original look really works for this car. From 10 feet you would think you are going to fall into this paint job. But when up close you see years of patina. You just can’t duplicate that look. Here is a couple I took before loading the car up.

Regarding the Window sticker did you supply the ECL codes (2 letters after the option alpha-numeric) for example the AK after L79?
I do not think anyone reproducing WS has the full list of what these indicate.
For example There are at least 3 different ECL's for ZL2 in 69.

I don't proclaim to be all-knowing, but I seriously doubt that this car ever came from the factory that way. Late in the 64 model year, the 300hp 327 became available on the Chevelle. There have been occasional rumors about the existence of higher hp versions of the 327 in the 64 Chevelle, but to my knowledge there has been no substantive proof of same.

EDIT: oops, I see Tory has already linked some of the many discussions on Team Chevelle about this subject.

Verne_Frantz

I didn't read the links to the Chevelle site, so this might be a repeat. The Chevy production records I have indicate there were 1737 300hp 327s built in the '64 Chevelle. (a few more for export) There is no production record of any L-76 produced. It was obviously "planned" though because Chevrolet's Finger Tip Facts book for '64 (which every salesman used for ordering information & specs) does the list the L-76 as available in the Chevelle. So, it's confusing but I'd go with the actual production records published by Chevy which state none were built.

I had forgotten that I posted that list of RPOs. I also have a list of model year total production of each option but I'm hesitant to post it due to copyright law. I've tried to reach the owner of the information for permission to no avail. Suffice to say (repeating) that no L76 production is listed for Chevelle.
Since that is a list of "RPO" installed options, I doubt it would contain any COPO cars.

As most know I put this car back together for Barry. Just about everything mechanical is new. He had the motor and transmission all redone. All new interior. A lot of NOS trim parts were installed. The car is rock solid, the floors are perfect. I fixed 2 small holes in trunk area. Someone put half quarters on car years ago but no cracks or visible damage shows. We decided to put the car back together leaving the old paint on it for that old patina look. I buffed the car out and was amazed at how well she cleaned up. From 10 feet you would think your were going to fall into the black paint. But up close it shows all the old patina. The car would be a perfect sleeper car. A car to go out and have fun with. With 4:11 gears I bet she will pull hard. If your looking for a solid original car to get some attention at your local cruises or drag strips this car will do that for you.

Paul,
Sorry,
No pics as of yet.
I'm still waiting to confirm some details on the car.
I'm believing this is a 365 horse car.
After digesting the team chevelle info and a standard timeline of options as far as the 300 HP availability.....those guys seem to be peating and repeating printed public conjecture compiled over 45+ years.(the old, its in print from 40 years ago, and reprinted, so it must be true) syndrome.

I have seen documents and have viewed cars built Way Before the standard time line with 300 hp, 4 speeds.
From what I've found , with no questions of restamping or adding a non known casting date components.......
The Car I inquired about is a June of '64 built 327-365 solid lifter, M20,12 Bolt 3:31 posi., in dash tach car with a few more options. Its coded and vin stamped as such for this Hdtp. SS.
As I dig deeper, Chevy didn't advertise these as they were intended to be Only a short run for 1 month of production. The first impression I made was Chevrolet had more 327 solid lifter engines on hand that weren't selling fast enough in the Corvettes......Rumors were running rampant of the new 396 engines for Vette and Chevelles pending.
The owner of this 64....is the second owner, the car came from a Western, Pa. Performance/ Corvette Dealership. I've known of it for 36 years , yet , have only seen it 3 times.. (all in the privacy of its garage spot) .
More info pending as I get it.....I'm pursuing to purchase this , one egg shell at a time. No conversations have taken place of selling any car as yet. The owner has 12 other 64-65 Chevelles I know of .. has more he hasn't talked about yet....;-)

Back in 1964, Hot Rod Magazine had a '64 El Camino project car that they claimed was a 365 HP car. If I remember correctly, they actually had Chevrolet replace the 365 HP motor for something more mundane for trailering. Somebody that has an early magazine collection could look this up. My mag collection is gone or I would.

It is my understanding that the 12 Bolt was used starting in the 1965 model year. The earliest housing I have seen was late September 1964. I am very curious to see the foundry date on the center section of the housing.
