I guess Tim Wellborn is selling some cars to make room for more...

https://www.mecum.com/lot-detail.cfm?lot_id=FL0115-204117

This was the one-of-one sunroof car I bought back in 1988 after bugging the owner once a month for five years straight. I tracked it down from a dusty old Polaroid picture I had for years. The persistance paid off eventually and the owner sold it to me. I rebuilt the original engine, drove it around, and even ran it at the Musclecar Nationals in 1988. I think it ran a 13.80 if I recall correctly? I eventually sold the car to the linebacker Kevin Greene in 1994 and he sold it to Wellborn in 2004.

Cool car. All born-with drivetrain and every option you could get. (And no you could not get hideaway headlights with the colored bumpers, so that is why it didn't have them). It was even ordered with the ultra-rare rear shoulder harnesses, invoiced for them on the broadcast sheet but they were never installed on the assembly line. 32,000 miles on it when I sold it. 35,000 miles now.

I'd love to have this one back in case anyone out there wants to buy it for me. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Was your sunroof car featured in a major Musclecar or Mopar mag back when Steve or maybe an even classier publication like Collectible Automobile?
Cool fact w/ the no hideways and colored bumper thing...the one of one combo w/ Hemi and hole in the roof?

I had it way back when. It was featured in a couple of magazines back in the day when it still had its original paint. I had it scuffed and repainted in 1991. The original paint was so badly applied at the factory and so thin that people would insult the car when I brought it to shows. There was almost no paint (just primer) on the firewall and lower inner fenders. The paint on the rear valance was just a continuous series of drip marks. The passenger quarter even had a big hunk of lead in it where they must have dripped it down when they were doing the original roof seams. They just smeared it around instead of removing it, and then just painted over it.

Here it is back when I found it in 1988. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/10/full-1359-17725-71charger.jpg

I know for a fact the car made the cover of Musclecars Magazine. I may have made Muscle Car Review, Musclecar Classics, and Guide to Muscle Cars, but I can't remember.

Same here. In fact, I didn't like 71 Chargers until I saw that one in a magazine as a kid.

What did this car sticker for originally?

Around $6400. Big bucks back in 1971, more than a hemicuda ragtop. I think the price of all the options was more than the base price of the car.

It was a really fun car. It had dealer-installed 4.56 gears in the Dana 60 instead of the original 4.10s. They were a Chrysler gear set not a later aftermarket set.

In all its orange glory, it looked like a giant GTO Judge. People would always ask me: Is that a Judge, man?

I'd tell them it was 4/3 scale model of one. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

I saw it last night on the Mecum Anaheim coverage. It was sitting on blocks on the main stage. The wife remembered the car from when we when both worked at Dobbs Publishing and she was Paul Zazarine's editorial assistant. Those were the days! I sold the car in 1994 to Kevin Greene.

My wife and son said I should turn the channel because it was only making me sad to see it again.
(Actually any excuse to not watch those auction shows, makes her happy. She sound of auction bantering drives her nuts).

Looks like the old sunroof car didn't sell. High bid of $375,000. I heard the reserve was $450k.

Nice car for sure!! I have a 70 with a hole in the roof. I remember when all "the boys" were going crazy for the sun roof stuff.

No - It's a regular, customer ordered car. I do have one of the 71 'Cuda show cars though....

Ah, nice, one of my favorites.

These toured with the Rapid Transit Caravan? I think I've seen a pic of one with the Caravan, but it may have been both a new-car show (or dealership?) and the Caravan at the same place.

I believe that's the car a buddy and I had a chance to buy back in '97 and passed on. Those pics make it hurt even worse.

I think they made 7 or 8 of them...all identical ....to debut at all the big auto shows like Detroit, Chicago etc. They were built just after the pilot cars were, on the first day of production. So....it may not be the same car you passed on.....this one was found in Texas and restored by Roger Gibson.
