Just picked up a 68 SS El Camino with a non-numbers block in it. I've figured out the EG stands for 396/375, but need some help decoding the rest of the block.

The 2 in the vin is a z

Hand stamped vin from Fremont. Vin is inline for a mid April built 66 Chevelle if it is a 962 block.

Correct. My bad on the typo.

Thanks. I have no qualms about anyone posting this info on other boards with the hopes of reuniting the block with the Chevelle it came in. Is the VIN stamped on the block in 66? I'll post it if I can find it.

If it is a 962 block the vin for a 66 Chevelle hardtop SS would be 138176Z139364. Convert 138676z139364. If it was out of an Elcamino the first part of the vin would be different.

The stamping looks very similar/consistent with my 67 L78 block... listed in a separate thread.
