As promised, I was going to start a thread on the 68 Camaro I recently purchased. I plan for all of this to take a while and post updates as I go along. Some members here are aware of this car (I was not) and already have started to steer me in a good direction. My immediate plan is to investigate the car, clean and familiarize myself with it. While this is not my 1st gen Camaro, it certainly is a departure from my comfort zone (Corvette's)

What we have here is a "mostly" unrestored 68 L78 SS Camaro. This car was purchased from Harry Mann Chevrolet. This car also has a history of sort as a drag car in Southern California. At some point, the original L78 short block was swapped out for an L88 short block (2nd owner?). According to documents I have, the engine is a 12:1, ZL1 cammed 427 with it's original L78 heads, intake, and carb. As one will see, there are some Day 2 parts here. The HM L78 has a replacement M22 (possible warranty per Jerry M) and it's original 4:10 rear end (with original posi and gears).

The HM L78 has been verified by JM as an good "Survivor" candidate with it's original short block, trim tag, body panels, some original paint, and original interior. The wheels are the same as they were back in the day.

For those who are familiar with this car, feel free to contact me or chime in. The history of the car is rather interesting as I know it. With that being said, I want the story to be straight and not my own interpretation of it.

Now.............some pics.

Oh wow, that is stunning. Agree with Charley, please leave the L88 in it. A light underhood cleaning is probably in order, but please don't &quot;fluff&quot; it. What an awesome find!

I remember when Jim Y. from the site had the car. He had said it was an L88 transplant for Harry Mann's grandson, the original owner. He had said he negotiated the price down because it didn't have the original engine and later found the L88 transplant paperwork from Harry Mann. A nice car that I had interest in at that time. Yes, keep the L88 in it and have fun. Maybe Jim can chime in on the history of the car.

What a great car. I love that engine compartment and would hate to see a can of spray paint within 10 feet of it. I agree with Bill about light cleaning only!

Do not know yet. I have some brake work to do before a little test drive. We will probably have snow again by that time.

Awesome car!
I would like to know more info on the wheels.
Are they 14's front and 15's rear?
What brand wheel and any manufacture names on the backside of the wheels if any?
Also what headers were used?

They are 15's all around with E70-15's on it. Ill check on the brand. There were 4 extras that came with the car too. The headers are Hooker Super Comps. I have documentation that they were changed around 2009-2010.

That Car actually found me at one time. I was at a city wide yard sale and was pulled inside a closed garage to check out a Camaro. It was up on a lift and I got to inspect the belly first....Good day to be remembered as a Camaro nut!

Once again, great car to have in your collection...

I don't think there is any docs with it from Harry Mann other than the POP, right?
Trans case is a service replacement, probably not a warranty part.

Color is great. Too bad there are so few glacier blue 69's......

Kurt,

You are correct on both items. The only doc I have for Harry Mann is the POP. The trans is a service case that was stamped. It was speculated by JM in his report it is a warranty replacement. At this point, one can go by that thought. I am not in a position to argue one way or another.

Here are some pics of the additional original parts that were either saved or collected along the way. While I cannot verify myself what is correct, all seems to be on the up and up based on some of my Corvette experience. Feel free to point out what may be wrong.

Oh yea, I forgot..................this lump. The block took a decking during a blueprinting. There is still some remains of the original stamp. I know there are some techniques to extract this further and would appreciate of someone would chime in.

I ordered up more Evaporust and Boshield today! Burned up what I had for Boshield on the engine compartment. That stuff is awesome!

There are some air shocks in the rear. One of them has a ruptured bellows. Need to decide what I am going to do there.

Repaired and cleaned up the original Harry Mann license plate frame and installed!

So the original owner was Harry Mann's Grandson? Jim and I have been playing phone tag and have not had a chance to chat yet.

FWIW, the L88 is going to stay!

I thought the original Safest Rust Remover (http://safestrustremover.com/) which he used performed better on the shower method. -Didn't foam as much as Evapo-rust which is a copy of SRR.

Remember to heat up the derusting liquid. The warmer it is, the better/faster it works. I used a waterproof aquarium heater and just plunked it down at the lowest point in the kiddie pool with a brick on it to keep it submerged.

I used Metal Rescue with a $10 Harbor Freight pump to swish the fluid around in the container I used to de-rust some rims. Worked great. Some great tricks here.

Nice! What is your air temperature out there? The stuff works a lot better when it, and the ambient temperature are warm.

If you cover the kiddie pool with a plastic sheet and put the sump in the bottom, it allows for the liquid to gather and flow down into one main spot instead of a big flat bottomed kiddy pool. Picture a swimming pool cover after a rainstorm, all the water gathers in the center. Takes much less liquid to do the job. Less evaporation, too.

Also, the process really works better if you steam clean and/or degrease everything first. You get much less contamination of the liquid and more clean surface area for the anti-rust liquid to attack.

I have the shop @ 72 degrees. I also have a heater in the solution and that ranges from 71 to 76 (depending where in the pool it is)

You really have to do the steam cleaning/degreasing first. All that dirt and oil contaminate the derusting fluid and render it inert before it can even get a chance to work. That was why I pressure washed the underside of my car first. It cleans all the contaminants off of your parts and provides a clean (non oily) area to work with.

Any oil on the parts basically acts as a protective shield preventing the derusting liquid from touching the surface. If I were you I would rent a steam cleaner or a pressure washer (using hot water) and then buy a new batch of derusting fluid.

What does it say on the shampoo bottles? LATHER, RINSE, REPEAT. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

You are correct. Kinda surprised me for a 25k car. Judging from the caked on grease from one side to the other, it must have been that way from early on.

I know Steve Offered, but I will too... Sell it to me I will clean and preserve it and sell it back to you...

The interior in that car could look brand new. It takes so many hours of light circular brush work with the right cleaners to get the grain clean, no amount of rubbing or heavy brushing will do it.

The bristles need to be fairly fine, short so they wont roll over, and varied in height which allows the shorter bristles to ride on the top of the grain while the longer ones penetrate into the grain, the key is that the lighter your pressure the better it works. A cheapo motorized toothbrush which oscillates works great, AGAIN THE KEY IS LIGHT PRESSURE.
If the car is a typical original interior in nice serviceable vehicle I check a spot or two on the seats and then the tops of the door panels using a toothbrush a CLEAN white rag and Spray Away NON AMMONIA window cleaner which I buy in 3 or 4 packs at Sams. Just a spot or two will tell you if the interior is clean, spray the window cleaner into the brush then brush lightly in a small (2-4&quot; diam) circle for a min or two and wipe with the white rag.

The crank was nos too. Heads took two years to get back from the best head guy in S.Ca. I had a set of nos MT scavengers, but the guy that installed the headers said they were too long (BS)...they were mocked up on a 1970 Nova. Car was never scraped or dented in it's life...rare for a hypo 4sp car. Can't believe the black plates were sold off. The registration stickers showed when it was last registered in 1971, when the kid got killed coming back home from a drag strip with a friend. More than likely Lyons. Good car worth keeping.

I'm in the process of doing some brake work to the car. After rebuilding the front calipers, I am not impressed with the brake fluid pressure or volume at the calipers when bleeding. I took the car for a road test and again, I am not impressed.

So, is there a way to test/check the distribution block as well as the proportioning valve? I know replacements are available. I would just like to keep the original parts on it.

After DW Cook gave me a little advice in the tech section, I was able to figure out how the proportioning valve works.

Rebuilt the M/C with a kit, opened up the proportioning valve to vacuum bleed the brakes and.............shazam!.................WE GOT BRAKES....................as good as they are going to get with a ZL1 cam.

Got a few things sorted out on the car, then bubba's work on the carb reared its head. The baseplate was glued where the idle screw threads in.

I've got a message into Eric to see if he has a nice baseplate for a 4053 Holley

So much for a debut at a little car show tomorrow

The brakes are a different story. That would be Sal from American muscle cars. He's the
reason I sold the car after 13 years of ownership.

There was some &quot;JB Weld&quot; on the idle screw boss. My experiences with Eric have been nothing short of top notch. I believe someone else was in there since then.

Again, the brakes with a ZL1 cam..........pretty good!

Thanks!

Dave,

The stamping is really light. I would say the last letter is &quot;T&quot;. The first, I cannot make it out. A &quot;WT&quot; master would have come on the car. Are the original stampings usually that light?

The way the bore of the master was corroded and the patina of the exterior, a person may be willing to speculate it is original. I'm surprised the M/C kit worked

You might want to just send the master and proportioning valves to Whitepost. They did an awesome job on the original master cylinder and wheel cylinders in my survivior SD455. If you tell them in advance that it is a survivior car they will leave the outside finish intact.

That is correct for 67-68 power disc Camaro's {WT}1 1/8 bore. The {AD 1&quot; bore} is for manual disc which is the same as the 67 Nova with factory disc. They are all hard to find!

The results are somewhat minimal. I certainly can see on the towels where the oxidation from the metallic was being picked up. I have chosen not to proceed with any machine polishing, opting for the natural look of the lacquer.

I never would have thought I (or any of us) would spend so much time documenting how lousy the finish quality was on my pride and joy(s)

FYI, depending on how long it is soaking, the evaporust and safestrustremover will remove some types of plating, like the black oxide on bolts and the grey phosphate on the hinges. I once soaked a semi-rusty brake booster in the liquid and it washed clean the yellow cad plating on the booster, down to the bare metal. It is wonderful stuff on bare metal items that have no other preexisting surface plating. It won't affect paint unless the paint is hanging on to a rusty portion of the metal and then it will seap underneath, dissolve the underlying rust and the paint will float off in that spot.

Don't use it on pot-metal or cast white metal as it will get into the pits and then start dissolving the metal away. I learned that the hard way on a portion of a lower steering column. After soaking too long, it looked like it developed the automotive equivilent of smallpox.

P.S. Heat up the liquid and the part and it works much faster. Piror to dipping, I usually leave the item to be soaked and the jugs of liquid out in the sun a few hours, or I use that aquarium heater in the bucket. 75 to 80 degrees is fine.

Good points Steve. I had the same dilemma. I chose to soak the parts and remove the rust vs losing coatings. If you are careful and dont allow it to sit for really long periods of time you can save some of the coatings. What I did do was upon removing said parts from the evaporust I would let air dry (as long as they were not any black from the oxidation of rust). It sorta works as a prevention too although doesnt last long. I still use WD40 or light oil to continue the preservation of the finishes. I now use an old crockpot with evaporust and it cuts the time down to around an hour where I was waiting anywhere from 12-24 hours. Just have to watch your temps. As for the #7 the hood looks great!! I kept going with #7 and would rub the shit out of it like I was mad at it until I started to see less and less green on the towels.. Of course you will always see car color when waxing lacquer. James(firstgenaddict) &amp; Mike Phillips from Auto Geek were my inspiration and who I read about with caring for original paints, tips and tricks and had phone conversations with both on opinions and thoughts about the green car. Heck I used #7 on everything from the heater box, firewall, core support, fender braces, inner fenders brackets and the whole underside of the car.. Even if it had rust on it and I couldnt use evapo I would rub it down with #7. Its some really good stuff. Great progress so far and look forward to seeing more.

Just noticed something. Your drvr inner fender had the holes and straps for the front end wiring harness.. Granted its different plants but only 1 build week apart but the green car does not have the holes for the straps.. Could it have been leftovers from 67 and 68 RS cars made it a requirement to have the inner fender updated..??.. Love the oddities of these cars.. Interesting stuff.

<span style="font-weight: bold">EDIT:</span>

Also noticed another difference.. Upper Alt bracket has the bracket for the throttle spring vs no bracket and spring attaching to coil bracket..

<span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="text-decoration: underline">For the record I am not claiming one correct over the other just find the differences as interesting</span>.</span>

Ok one other thing.. This car needs to be in the Survivor Section over on CRG.. Also would be a great candidate for the feature car over there as well..

P.S. Heat up the liquid and the part and it works much faster. Piror to dipping, I usually leave the item to be soaked and the jugs of liquid out in the sun a few hours, or I use that aquarium heater in the bucket. 75 to 80 degrees is fine. </div></div>

Ok one other thing.. This car needs to be in the Survivor Section over on CRG.. Also would be a great candidate for the feature car over there as well.. </div></div>

Darrel,

I had noticed the alternator bracket / accelerator spring deal myself. As I have mentioned in the past, the Camaro's are new to me. Being a Corvette guy, I'm used to one plant producing maybe 20,000 cars a year. The Camaro's are an entirely different beast in that respect.

For what is worth, this car was a special order and delivered at the end of April of 68.

To your point, I am finding the little details and differences in the cars to be fascinating myself.

Secondly...............the muffler was just junk. It sounded horrible and was not very enjoyable to drive. I was hesitant due to the muffler being original (IMO) and was in fear of not being able to reuse the original pipes, hangers, and clamps.

After consulting with one of my customers, he felt he could easily save everything I wanted to, but would have to sacrifice the muffler. Sooooooooooo........off it went.

Not sure if you solved your brake problem or not, but if you have original rubber brake hoses, it might be time for a change. Last year, both of my survivor 69 Chevelles had the rubber hoses fail internally and I had the same problem as you with low fluid flow/ pressure. I replaced both the front and rear rubber hoses and problem solved.

Good luck.

I went off on a little side project with the HM Camaro. I have enlisted the help of Billy Gould. His company (Auto Ancestry)http://www.autoancestry.com/index.html, helped me with the 63 Corvette I had a few years ago.

I was looking to fill the gap of information about the 2nd owner of the car. I suspect it may have been drag raced.

I provided Bill with what I knew already, and provided him with the contact information of the original owner, as well as Jim Yocono (AStock). Here is the email Billy sent me today............

Tim, I called both Mike and Jim. They were both helpful but without any new facts. But I do have a pretty good profile of the young man who died owning the car. I can’t make any promises but I think I have several good leads to follow. There are several places to look. First, Jim said that the man died in 70 or 71. There might be a newspaper article . Supposedly they were coming back from a drag strip or a race track. There might be a list of deaths in Santa Maria for those years. Or he might have his death recorded in a town along the way. It is possible to contact local people of the right age in Santa Maria to see if anyone remembers him. He probably went to that high school so that might be a lead. That city had a population of about 80k in 1970.

As you can see, there are lots of places to look but nothing specific. I think there is a 50-60% chance of identifying him and finding his family. I might have to hire a researcher at a modest extra cost but only if necessary and with your OK. I like to spell it all out so that you know what is required. It is an interesting search and a definite challenge.

I can offer no guarantees but will gladly take on the challenge. My fee is $300 which you can pay by personal check to Bill Gould AutoAncestry 51 Mountain Hill Rd Plymouth MA 02360 . I suspect this project may take from one to four months. Bill Gould

One of the items that was discovered among all of the parts, was a perfectly dated 68 Corvette 3x2 intake and carbs. Jim felt this was the induction set up that were to be used on the HM L78 next along with the L88. Hmmmmmmmmm.................

I posted this reply (thread) in the Racing section......................

Does anyone have, or know of someone..............that has collected racing results, pictures, slides, etc. from Lions Dragstrip?

In the search for the missing pieces to the puzzle on the HM L78 Camaro, we may have nailed down the name of the 2nd owner who MAY have raced the car. Having said that........(once the name is confirmed) I can then go and search for any results in programs, newspapers, newsletters, etc.

While all of this is a complete shot in the dark, I figure it is at least an interesting little project.

If anyone has a tip, suggestion, correction, a place to call, a place to write.................I am all ears.

In advance..........thanks for your consideration.

Tim, We know that the owner #2 died in 71 or 72 and prior to Dec 2 1972. We can also estimate that he was between ages 20 and 40. I searched the Social Security Death record for any man who lived in Santa Maria CA at his death, who was born between 1932 and 1952 and who died in 1971 or 1972.I got one hit. I can’t say that this is definitely our man but there is a strong possibility. I will do some further checking. This man was 25 when he died. All the facts fit well Bill Gould AutoAncestry

Tim,
All signs lead to the fact that Mike Satore is our man. He is the only man who died in Santa Maria in 71 or 72 of the right age, and we know that he died in Santa Barbara which is between the drag strip and Santa Maria. The attached obituary only says that he died in a local hospital. He could have been injured in the crash and then lingered for a while until he died. There are names of family in the obit so I will try to make contact.I should be able to confirm if this is our man. Bill Gould

With the spirit of a true Trailblazer, she moved to the Central Coast in the mid-1940s. Shortly thereafter, the rest of the family followed her, including her mother, father, sisters, and cousins. She proudly drove to work in her brand new green and white 1953 Chevy. Always a starter, her mom and dad bought a red and white 1953 Chevy.

For many years, she lived and worked at Rosemary Farms in Santa Maria. She also worked at a local cooler and for the food service department at Allan Hancock College.

She was happily married to Jesus a.k.a. Chuey Hernandez for over 20 years. A lengthy illness not withstanding, she persevered and enjoyed her family and friends. They enjoyed cooking for and entertaining friends and family together. She can probably be best remembered for her love of life. Stemming from her roots and being brought up in Northern New Mexico, she loved Native American art and jewelry. Her grandmother was a full-blooded Pueblo Indian, and she was very proud of this.

She spent much of her time playing cards and doing crossword puzzles with her beloved sister, Evelyn. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She was so delighted when she saw their cute smiling faces.

She is survived by her loving sons, Herbert Roy Pacheco, Daniel Aguilera, and Jose Aguilera, and her daughter, Virginia P. Aguilera-Quiros. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Laura Pacheco, Brian Pacheco, Adrienne Aguilera, Freddie Aguilera, Jr., Corina Aguilera, Daniel Aguilera, Jr., Misty Aguilera, Monica Quiros, Steven Aguilera, and Ashley Pacheco. She leaves 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Fred R. Aguilera and Michael Satore.

A celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2004, at Dudley Hoffman Mortuary. Visitation begins at 3 p.m., and a vigil will be conducted by Father Mark Neuman beginning at 7 p.m. A scripture service will be held on Friday, December 17, 2004 at Dudley Hoffman Mortuary at 10 a.m., with a burial service at the Santa Maria Cemetery to follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary and Crematory.

Were back from MCACN............took the car for a little ride today (54 and sunny).............and guess what...............the master cylinder I rebuilt is going south. Honestly, I'm surprised it worked after I put a kit in it earlier this year considering how pitted the bore was.

Soooooo................I pulled it of to send it out and have it sleeved.

My plan is to return the original heads, intake, carb, to the original L78 short block after I get everything freshened up. The only large ticket items are a pair of 842 heads for the L88 and perhaps a set of MT Super Scavenger headers for it.

White Post did a great job sleeving the master cylinder and wheel cylinders in my survivor Sd455. If you tell them not to touch the original outside finish, they will follow your orders, otherwise it comes back nicely painted. Turnaround was one day!

P.S. I wouldn't use those NOS brake pads unless you like the car stopping like the old days...a long distance and the pads heating up and fading out after one hard stop. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif

Call Whitepost and tell them about the sand blast marks. Someone on the repair line obviously did not read the instructions you gave that it was a survivor unit, not to be refinished (or read it too late). On mine, they masked off the openngs and only blasted the ports themselves. The exterior was completely untouched. I think they owe you at least a partial refund for their mess-up.

Jasonlooks like 5/8". I don't think you could make 7/8" work. Might have to drill another hole. The end of the mount would cover the original hole, or find a tach that has the original spacing

I've got other things I should be working on, but frankly cannot help myself but fool with the HM 68.

Not that the car required any cleaning, but I gave it a gentle wash down and then soaked it in Boshield. I then wiped everything down today. Here are a few pics......

I never was happy with the fit of the rear wheels and tires on the car. I had a pair of 15x7' 3.5 BS American's from the last time I owned the car. That added to some old F70-15's I had laying around, so I decided to mock it up and see if I was happy with the fit. I think I have something here......

That is a great pic of the oval tail pipes. I needed that as a reference for the Pypes set I have. There is no way I can ever get them to stop rattling on the body or spring. I'm gonna make a wooden buck and shape them in my press. I knew the last several inches of those pipes were pressed from the factory, but that is a perfect example.

They are thin. You can see the right side needed some help when Paul had it. I fear if I lay a welder to it, I'll just blow through it. Paul and I both wanted to try to hang on to what's left of the original pipes. At some point they will require a proper burial.

Unanimous, the TT's look much better with the color.
You will blow thru on the pinhole. I start at least an 1/8th inch outside with reduced heat and quite a bit more wire speed. Short, tack welds until you find good enough metal to weld to. Once you have a solid perimeter, you weld to that and close up the hole. Careful grinding to flush and a spray of salt water on the bare metal will blend it some.
If you have a Dent Fix Eliminator, with the medium wire wheel, will make a close replication of metal texture to hide the grinder marks. I always finish grind with 120 too.

Personally Tim, I think TT's are a better choice with that color of that killer Camaro. - Bill W

(I like that yellow Seville in the background too!)

----Bill,,,I'm a certified Seville slappy having owned 3 of them so far. If I had the garage space I'd be giving someone (Tim) with what appears to be a pristine yellow one a call! They are such a cool design and size. Very appropriate "go to dinner" with another couple car.....Bill S

I'm a huge TT fan (I just put a set on my car) and absolutely hated Cragars when I was younger - but as I get older I find that a set of big/little Cragars on a first gen Camaro is a killer look. Years back when I first saw Grady's red 67 with the L88 at one of the SCR's in Joliet helped change my mind on Cragars...........

Can't go wrong with whatever you decide.

Agreed Bill! Forty years ago my best friend had a Seville in silver with grey leather, and "go to dinner" with them was a regular occurrence. At the time my wife was driving a new Olds Toronado but I still always admired the Seville, a timeless classic design! - Bill W

---- My favorite of the ones I had was a dark grey metallic with light grey leather and vinyl top one. I was seriously thinking of slapping a 454 in it at the time. I even had Nova big block frame mounts and a few other things for it, but came to my senses. It was too good a driver just as it was!.....Bill S

Great story. So the car came with the original black but with an L88 in there?

I like the Cragars more.

Great story. So the car came with the original black but with an L88 in there?

I like the Cragars more.

The story in short as told.......

The car was apart when the 2nd owner was killed. The car was getting raced. The blueprinted OM (L78) was there as was the 427 short block. The original L78 heads, intake, and carb were installed on the 427 (albeit heavily ported) thinking that was the next progression for the car.

I'm still partial to the Cragar's as well:wink:

Torque Thrusts are the way to go, especially on a blue 68'

I may be biased on TT's over Cragar's, but I calls em' as I see them.

And they are in fact lighter!!! :naughty:

Carrying on the Day 2 theme of the car, a proper vintage A212CW is now in place.

I made a deal on the remaining A212CW's from Bill Pankiw (Big Block Bill). Straight up guy to do business with:biggthumpup: Thanks Bill!

One great thing about having your own tire equipment, you can play around with different looks.

I also have come to the realization I have waaaay to many wheels and tires laying around!

FINALLY.......the weather has broke and the roads are clean. So when I was moving cars around in the shop today, a little test drive was in order.

Also, in the mean time, I was able to source a nice relatively virgin set of 842's for the L88

I was going through the binder for the car today, and ran across a CD. This was from back in 2016 when Tracey had the 2 original photos of the car digitally enhanced to clear them up. Thought I'd share........

Winter has finally set in here in the great north. The good part?

1. MCACN is near
2. Snowmobile season is near
3. I don't feel guilty taking a good running car apart

Earlier this year, I had sourced a nice set of 842 aluminum heads for the L88. My plan was to pull the motor and have a look inside. I'll strap the new heads in the 427 and return the original 840's to the original block. Depending how the cam looks, I may consider a more modern grind than the ZL1 cam currently in it.

I did also get a service dated Holley 3418 (L88) carb. That came with a bunch of parts I got when I bought a couple of cars last year. We'll have to see on that one. I may take the liberty of having a carb built specifically for the build. I suspect this will find it's way onto the dyno at AMS.

Anyways.......

Belongs to a customer (has my dealer plate on it so I could drive it). I rebuilt the front end in it, aligned it, and did an exhaust system.

RS/SS original numbers 396-325hp 4 speed car. P/S, P/B, deluxe interior, console, gauges, fold down rear seat. Original body panels with nice paint. Still needs a little work but very doable. POP and window sticker
