Looks cool! Not much info on the site. Original engine? Paperwork? L78 stamped Norwood trim tag or LOS car? Original panels?

Tracker1,
Mecum has still not uploaded all the info. It is a Norwood, L78 stamped car I bought out of Chicago. No paperwork although the NCRS paper is on order.
Car was fully restored when I got it, not sure which if any panels are original. Matching number engine and trans. Smog comes in the trunk.
This is an older restoration. Paint is shiny and looks good but you can see more than one color on the car if you look close. Underneath is clean.
This car is sorted to drive, I rebuilt the engine with a roller cam and roller tipped rockers for cam longevity. Still original compression and correct square port heads, pop-up pistons and steel crank. Correct carb, distributor, etc.

GaryS and bayfritz,
I wasn't certain that rule applied to cars going to auction. If you're interested in buying pre-auction, my price is $65,000.
Thanks,

This car belonged to Gary Dyer at one point of Dyer Blowers and Mr. Norm's race car fame. He restored it and rebuilt the drive train and showed it at local Chicago Car shows.

Looks Nice Sam, hope it does well at the auction! These cars have always been undervalued IMHO... you rarely ever see one! I've owned mine since 1991 and hadn't seen another one till 2005 when I traveled to the GM Nats in Carlisle.

Chuck,I hope it is better than Kansas City. There were 89 corvettes, mostly 80's & 90's. 45 or so Mercedes. One of the 69 Camaro copos bid to 75k no sale. There were a lot of "replicas", " tribute" cars. The quality of prior auction was not there. I think the market for auctions might be reaching saturation. One of the trucking companies told me there are now about 55 collector car auctions. I talked to one of the buyers and Reliable(on site) told him 3-5 weeks before they could take his car out. Also the crowd was very light, apparently without much money. Jim

Yep, it was an LS6. I think it had been returned to an L78 by the time I drove it but could be wrong.

Just a reminder, this L78 will be selling a week from tomorrow at Mecum in Seattle. I'm also selling a 1997 Brickyard 400 parade car at the same auction.

Lot numbers are S59.1 (L78) and F179 (Brickyard Camaro)

Thank you for allowing me to post this for sale on Supercar Registry!

Sam, Can you say if your CKO engine is the born with engine.....

Is the full 10N5xxxxx stamping legible on the block bell housing flange.

Same with MUNCIE born with stamping ???

Do you know if youre car will be down at the QWEST Field Display Center on Thursday
(as I'm leaving town early Friday for NHRA race in Canada)

Was it possible to get "SS" wheels on these cars as a factory option?

Mr70
06-07-2015, 05:42 PM
No,not @ all from the factory. The dealer could put them on OTC afterwards for an extra cost though.
Just Chevelle/Elcamino got those Magnum 500 "SS" wheels included with the Super Sport pkg. during 1970.And Novas had them possible as an extra cost option if you paid for the Super Sport pkg. first.

Just curious why this paperwork has not been re-united with the car before now? Or is that too complicated to answer here?

I just learned a few weeks ago that an old high school friends mother bought the car new. When his mom passed away, he found an envelope with all the paperwork for the car. I tried to buy it but was outbid.

Beautiful car. Sorry that it did not bring more money. I would have loved to have bought it for that price.

My favorite car of the auction was the survivor '65 L78 Impala SS convertible if any of you guys say that one. Bid to around $72k as a no sale.

Curious if anyone knows if the car has the 'original born with engine' or a replacement 'numbers match' engine??
$42.5K is a Great price for this car if it has the born with engine... if not, then it was priced about right.

Sorry to be so late to the party. I recently had cataract surgery so reading is a hassle for now.
Yes to all who ask, the engine has what looks like an original stamp to me (and to others I have asked). Before I rebuilt the motor there was a fair amount of corrosion on the pad which indicates to me that if the engine was re stamped it would have been years ago. I'm not dancing around this question, but I didn't own the car from new and I am not a stamping expert. I firmly believe it's real.

And yes, the Muncie also has a partial VIN on it.

For all of you who would have paid more, the car was disclosed here and you certainly could have bid for it as Chris did. I would have been happy to sell it for more. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

Chris, thanks for having Dennis bring the paperwork, I was more than a little surprised to see it! As you said the car was sold with white walls and full wheel covers. It was also not an RS, and it once had a rear defogger which is no longer there. It was born with an AM radio but now has an AM/FM, a change I chose to make. (thanks Charley!)

This was a nice #3 driver that still needed some work including a full paint job. I think the buyer got a great deal but not a steal.

Thanks for all the interest!

I too really liked that '65 Impala L78 convert, great car. That would have been a hydraulic lifter car.

As long as you're happy Sam, that's what counts. You had fun with the car for a while! The new owner was notified about the paperwork, but did not want to pay what I did for it. He offered $500.00. I think it would add more than that in value for him in the future!

Thank you Sam for that info. Do you know if the block had the partial VIN stamp? Usually located on the bell housing flange above the oil filter.

MN 70L78
06-09-2015, 11:32 PM
IMHO I too think the original paperwork is worth more than $500.. It will add a few thousand dollars value to the car!

Seattle Sam

Scott, I could not find a VIN on the bell housing flange.

How much for the paperwork? The new owner of this car obviously has no intentions of ever selling it or just does not care about the cars pedigree or he feels like he is being extorted; I have pictures of the VIN stamp on this engine somewhere and if I remember correctly the engine was stamped on the front of the block in front of the RGT cylinder head and not on the rough casting on the back like every other Norwood 375 car I have ever looked at with original engine. Personally; I think the buyer brought himself a real nice car.

BTW, I agree that Scotts (MN 70L78) 70 L78 Camaro is one of the nicest 375 cars on the Planet. Come to think of it there are only 4 maybe 5 of these cars that are even restored. Hell I only think there are 25-30 70 L78’s that we know of and out of that only a couple of them still have their the Born With drive train.

Scott's car is showroom new, looks great!

My 19070 L78 Camaro has the born with engine...I tore the drive shaft in half and broke my tranny case, so I had to replace the case, tail housing, & main shaft...the rest is original...LoL
Still has the original spare in the trunk, most of the original paint(with dealer optioned Z stripes), & I have the original bellhousing, distributor, clutch fan up in the garage.

Still has the original 4:10 rear, although I did look into a Motion overdrive, but never followed through... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif
