my roommate at college had a 12 second 396 corvair he raced at gainesville in the early 80's..always had a thing for them since then..actually owned a corsa vert for a few days then sold it... (rustiest car I ever owned)..

That is one sexy Corvair. I've always wanted to see a 09 in a 64 Chevelle done in the same fashion. I'd say this trumpfs that! Well done.

That is cool!! It must be fun pulling up next to some unsuspecting driver and watching him/her break their necks trying to figure out where the rumbling is coming from, only to catch the Corvair from the corner of their eye, leave 'em in a pile of smoke!! Fun!!

How's the 409 handle with that front to rear weight disparity.....

A friend has a Monza with a. 302 in it & another friend of Dad's (now deceased) built a VW bug with a L88 in it.... a car he started around '69
.
Those 'Vairs are really put together .....nice !

MEL

The 327" Corvair handles really well,as good as a stock Corvair, (engine has aluminum heads). The 409" Corvair (also with aluminum heads) you need to be more careful driving it but it's OK as well. They will never be race cars but there fun to drive. Both use modified Corvair transaxles which so far have held up with careful use, thanks <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Thanks Bill <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif ,as you may know all Corvair diffs come from the factory with only 2 spider gears stock , both cars have been upgraded to 4 spiders and also in place of the stock sheet metal inspection cover a custom 1/4" steel plate cover has been made and installed. Other then careful deburring of the diff parts and some shot peening of parts the diffs are stock . They don't appear to be very strong but they hold up quite well if not abused.I also use synthetic gear lube.

Where I grew up in the Orange County area of So Cal in the early to mid 70's, there were a fair number of these conversions running around. One of the families who's kids attended my high school owned Crown (sp?) Manufacturing, who built conversion kits for all sorts of makes of cars, and they would show up with all kinds of strange conversions. I seem to remember a Porsche 912 with a Corvair in the back that ran pretty well.

Another buddy had a Corvair with the Crown conversion and the engine was located in the back seat making for a nice mid-engine setup, but the back seat was gone and the engine cover wasn't the best noise/heat insulation (but made it sort of stealthy). And the transaxle was still the weakest link, so you had to roll on the throttle, but he sure surprised a lot of people with that car.

I went to my very first Cruise Night in Orangeville Ontario, most people had never seen a 409 in a Corvair sedan LOL <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif Car ran great about 200-210 degrees. Spectators, etc wonder where the V8 sound is coming from LOL I would like to get the tempurature down a little bit but it runs very STRONG !I have a 6 puck ceramic clutch disc in it and it chatters a bit:( but I guess I can live with it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2015/07/full-5236-29328-100_5619.jpg

This would indeed be a fun car to have at MCACN. I am sure it would bring a smile to many faces and although you may have a tired jaw from answering questions and talking about it, we can promise a great time with great people.

Please consider this an invitation to join us! www.mcacn.com (http://www.mcacn.com)

You know, we all really, REALLY need to see the 409 car laying down a massive smoky 100-foot burnout. We can all chip-in for new rear tires and a clutch if necessary (a-la Eric's Chevelle transmission issue). That would be an epic picture.

Mel use to own the fastest car (31 Ford)in the valley...Hockley valley(north of Toronto). We need to really encourage and pump up the tires, plus clear the area of about 1/2 mile for the all the shrapnel of diff and tranny parts.
