Picked up my post olds from Stefano a couple of months ago and have been enjoying it quite a bit...nice car to drive. Had it out the other eve for some "spirited" exercise and may have been a little hard on the poor girl! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif. She's banging on the door to let her out! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif seems I have rattled some rod bearings !...so...motor is coming out.repair..rebuild..replace?..not numbers matching so no worries there but will be along the lines of a stock rebuild. My first Olds project..who woulda thought!!...stay tuned!
So many original parts on this car!!

W 30 carb..late 69 build

Sorry to hear about the engine issues, the Silver lining is that you can now build it your way. Keep us posted on progress and lots more pics on the W-30 specific parts.

Alss, you know you were secretly wishing for this so you could have some fun building a non-Chevy engine. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif

Always like building my own motors.<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif so....... wasn't the bearings after all..crank and rods are all ok, but the no 2 piston scuffing the cylinder wall will make things interesting. Looks like I get to pick out new pistons! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif more to come as details and dimensions are made available.

I went with Diamond forged in my SBO. Did you find a block? Let me know if you need help searching for one. Uh oh, sounds like we might have another Oldsmobile junkie on our hands........

Better read the PSMCDR rules, no rollers, and by memory cam lift has to be within 2% of stock grind:-)

Houston, we may have a problem...WILL NOT use a flat tappet cam!..no way I'm spending good $$ and putting in a cam that may or may not survive..will be mild..and close to stock, but def a hyd roller. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Dick Miller racing has a modified timing chain cover, looks stock when installed as its a stock one cut in 1/2, just in case you want to make cam swaps easier.

The challenge of the roller cam in an Olds is the 5/16" rocker arm bolts. There are two basic options... the first is drilling the expensive/rare heads for a 3/8" or 7/16" stud and adding guide plates. Option 2 is the Harland Sharp 5/16" bolt-on mini-shaft rockers, which are around $450, and good to 350 lbs open spring pressure.

With roller rockers, you'll have to modify/remove the stock valve cover baffles or double up gaskets. Ram Air Restoration makes a 0.200" thick hard rubber gasket that's a nice piece. The stud mount rockers may clear with a short poly lock, but the mini-shaft ones hit the baffles at max. valve lift... went through figuring that out on my old '83 the hard way.

No doubt a roller is the way to go, other than those pesky Pure Stock rules. I'm stuck with the flat tappet for mine.

Works for small blocks?

As far as I have researched this should be true:-) I want one!!

Luke is a wealth of Oldsmobile knowledge:-) (I think he looked over this car at MCACN before it sold to Albert....)

All Olds timing covers are the same from '64-up, so it should work.

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm no guru. At the rate you're going, you'll have more Olds experience than me in another week or two. I did spend some time at MCACN sitting next to this Olds in the post car display.

OK guys got the rockers figured..cam figured..heads done..thats the good news..bad news..crank cracked..failed mag. rod small ends are oversized..almost can push the pins out by hand!. So, my motor guy found me another shortblock and I'm starting over. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif yay.........

I'd suggest CP's and BTR in NY has a nice deal.

We were originally hoping to do a basic rebuild, but when I found the self-tapping inlet fitting (with no filter) and the corrosion & debris inside the bowl (4th and 5th pics) it became a restoration since the bowl would have to be media blasted to address the corrosion.

Just another day on the job.

Thanks again Albert for letting me be a part of your build.

motor update..bad news good news. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif. second short block..crank is NFG, one bore needs a sleeve...but I'm a problem solver so here's my solution. Sleeve the one cylinder..go 030 on all 8 holes. I have H beam rods already so all that remains is the crank...new Eagle unit on its way!...I'm balls deep now, lets finish it up right! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif

Nice job as usual Eric.

My solicited opinion is that since it's not the original block and they are not too difficult to find....... Going .030-.040 or even .060 over is not an issue with OLDS, always sonic test at .060.

I would not sleeve just one clyinder on a common block and the likelihood that the stock cylinders will spec out for a Performance application and once torque / hone plates are used is about nill.

DW31S
07-17-2016, 08:39 PM
Stefano, I respectfully disagree with your opinion on sleeping one cyl. I know who will be doing the machine work and installing the sleeve. I'd bet the outcome will be favorable. I'm close friends with the engine builder and have no problem with his talent, ability and ideas.
That carb does look awesome! Does Eric do any performance upgrades to the carbs he rebuilds?
To answer the question about my Diamond Pistons.....they were purchased several years ago and there no quality issues.

Stefano
07-18-2016, 05:27 PM
I'm not questioning the integrity of sleeving a clyinder. I have two engines at our machine shop getting a single sleeve right now. One is an LS3 and the other is an OLDS 455.

Maybe I misunderstood, I thought AL was considering a sleeve to keep the block all standard. Custom pistons can be made if he doesn't want to go .030. but .030 over on an OLDS or more is generally not an issue.
