I just heard this and couldn't believe it. One of the big news networks and Rolling Stone just announced minutes ago he has passed away after being taken off life support. He was found unconscious in full cardiac arrest. Sad... R.I.P. Tom. Go play for God.

Tommy Petty definitely had a signature sound. Great band, too...apparently still clinging to life...as the earlier reports of his death were unsubstantiated. :(

A CBS Twitter account attributed the report of Petty’s death to the Los Angeles Police Department; the tweet has since been deleted (https://twitter.com/CBSThisMorning/status/914943463208177665).
“The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly [sic] provided to some media sources,” the police department posted on Twitter. “However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting.”
TMZ followed up with a post (https://twitter.com/TMZ/status/914953557614268416) that Petty was “still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer’s death is inaccurate.”

What a HUGE loss for the music world. Great writer of some of the most popular/reconizable songs in the world. I used to sing 2 or 3 of his songs a night every Friday & Saturday for many years. I am just bummed. He just played in Napa, CA at the Bottle Rock Music Festival this May. Ya just never know..D

Bruce, thanks for posting the update. I just went to check headlines and saw that a lot of "organizations" including LAPD say they can't confirm his passing. Now I feel like I posted it prematurely. Apologies to everyone. His prognosis doesn't look good. As Bruce posted, reports are now saying that he's "clinging to Life".

Clinging to life, is still not good. Thank for posting, Mark! We can only hope for the best.:frown:

Any time you are 'found' in cardiac arrest the outcome is usually not good at all even if you survive. Hopefully a miracle happens in this case. He is one great performer and song writer.

I've been listening to his music since I heard the news this afternoon. I grew up listening to Tom Petty. I am truly bummed. I saw him in concert a half a dozen times, the last time this summer. Each show was better than the one before. RIP Mr. Heartbreaker.

As early as 12 or 13 yrs old, my favorite bands were Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and ZZTop. I will miss the music of Tom (AKA Charlie T. Wilbury)....

It's so weird because even though I never owned any of his music it has still always been a part of my life. I have always enjoyed his work and this world is just a little bit more gray without him here. R.I.P Into the great wide open

The opioid juggernaut HAS TO BE STOPPED. Freewheeling doctors and their prescription pads
have to be kept in check!

Was hoping it wouldn't be drug related when I heard of his passing.

Broken hip and still performing - felt he "owed" it to his fans.

You didn't owe us anything Tom!

What really needs to happen is people need to stop trusting the drug pushers. I've lost too many friends to this, but in most cases it ended up being abuse was the cause. It seems to stem from one back problem, one pain etc. They go see the Doc and the drug pusher gives them the opioids. They're hooked. I think some people are just predisposed to being an addict and don't have the ability to stop on their own. I didn't hang out with him, but it doesn't appear to be the case with Tom Petty. It sounds like he was being treated for a lot of pain and he trusted the Doc.
RIP Tom Petty.
