I know that the newer "Super Cars" are not as popular with everyone. Did anyone check out the 1979 Chevrolet Camaro "Z-29" (yes Z-29) lot #605 (page58)last weekend in Scottsdale? It sold (no reserve) for $11,500 dollars. I found a bunch of similarities between the "Z-29" and the "Yenko Turbo-Z". Both the "Turbo-Z" and the "Z-29" were conversion cars, both ran in the 14 second range. Both had seat upgrades avail and "trick" stereo options, wheels, suspen etc. I think that Don Yenko's idea was better. What are your thoughts? The car was vin # 1Q87L9l621190 which makes it a 79,350/170 or 175hp (before upgrade)car built in Van Nuys,California plant. The cars had quite a few upgrades. They are listed on the following site: http://www.nastyz28.com/2gcog/stegmiller/special.htm#MACHOZZ29 If you want to see the actual car, go to http:www.barrett-jackson.com/auctionresults/commom/cardetail.asp?id=165230

I looked at the car and talked to the owner. It still had orig. Goodyear Wingfoot tires. I was gonna try to Bid on it but forgot all about it. It was a nice car but kinda ugly paint color that was Imron. I would have paid that much for it and then wondered why I bought it.

Isn't it funny that they used (and still use) Z-29 designation, since that was the RPO code for the Vega GT?

Yeah, I think that they were trying to make it sound like the work that they did made the car "one up" from a Z-28. I checked the vin on the Z-29, it was a Sport Coupe with a 170-175 hp 350 when it came down the line. I checked out your Vega site. Very neat. If you other guys have a chance it is worth the effort to check it out.

Thanks, it would be cooler if I had a Stinger to show off! Send one my way!

Not a bad price if the car was truly that nice.

I remember when these came out. This is one of the few times they have resurfaced.

I think that its interesting to note that these cars did not start out as Z/28's like Yenko did...BKH

Kind of an odd car. Clill, the color isn't THAT bad.......almost looks like the color of your 68 L-78 Chevelle which is now in my area..By the way it's real close to me somewhere. I went to a cruise at a local hot dog joint and in it came. That was one sharp car.

It looks better in the pic than in real life. Imron has a Thick look to it.

It was a deal at $11,500. Esp with that engine and trans and those seats. Not a deal at what they want for it.

I'm not a big fan of the 75-81's but that looks like it would be a fun car...especially w/ that engine. Also, the relative scarcity would makes it an interesting piece IMHO.

It is funny how topics of conversation come back up at interesting times. I posted this one back in January and I had actually forgotten about it. I met a gentleman the other night at the home of a friend who allows me to store my wrecked '81 Z28 (non Yenko) at her house. Here is the funny part: he told me that he wants to restore his mother's '81 Z28 that she bought new with a dealer installed "Raytech"?(I am not sure about the brand name of the system) turbo charger! I was floored! I am going to see the car this week and I am wondering if it might be a Yenko Turbo Z.

I personally don't know how the Yenko Turbo Z's ran, but gosh those Pontiac 301 Turbos sure were a disappointment.

Does anyone know how the two different F-bodies compare, both on the performance side and driveability?

At least we know the General got it right once EFI became popular!

Paul,
The Yenko Turbo Z was a very interesting ride. Brian told me that the cars ran in the 14 second range (1/4 mile). The cars fuel economical and dependable. Better than the 301 Ponchos.

Brian,
I am going to check the documents on the '81 Z and I will get the vin # too.

Well, within the last year, my buddy "Mo" bought a Yenko T/Z, and then another friend here in town bought an '81 301 Turbo. They are COMPLETELY different animals. It's almost as if the 301 NEEDS the turbo just to move, while the Yenko's turbo is just there to "help out" when more power is needed. I have ridden in both, and I would have to say the win light would definitely light up for the Yenko...probably pretty easy.

That 301 was a real bummer. Sad, do you know that the 301 Poncho is one of the only "conventional" V-8s that Edelbrock does not make an intake manifold for? I think that says it all.

Here is some info on the "Z29".

Don't forget the spaces between MACHO and Z and between Z and Z29.
