There is an article in May 1967 CAR LIFE magazine titled "Magic at MESA the Supernatural Seven from Chevrolet's Bag of Tricks." In this article CAR LIFE magazine was invited to a test session of the 1967 Chevrolet "super-performers" at the GM Proving Ground in Mesa, AZ. They drove the 427 Corvette, SS 427 Impala, SS 396 Chevelle, SS 396 Camaro, and the new Z/28 Camaro. Also in attendance was development engineer Doug Roe's pet project -- a 427 Camaro drag car. "We want to keep abreast of what some of our customers are doing" was the explanation that Roe gave to CL. The Camaro had a high-performance Holley equipped 427 engine with a 4sp and 4:88 rear end gears. It also had open headers and mag wheels with 7.60 Goodyear drag slicks. They ran it through a quarter mile timing it with a stopwatch at 13.5 sec at 99 mph but Roe said the car will run in the 12 sec bracket with a few more modifications. I thought this was interesting because it is the first I have heard of Chevy with their own 427 1967 Camaro and that they must have been well aware of what dealers like Nickey, Yenko, Motion, and others were doing with the Camaro.

I thought I remembered seeing someone selling a 67 Camaro that had some metal tag attached to it that said something like "factory race car"? This was within the last 2 years and I don't remember if it was for sale or I saw it on someone's web site. Anybody else see it?

Maybe you're thinking of Kevin's 1968 Yenko. A photo its lhs door pillar tag is embedded below. More info at http://www.corvettes-musclecars.com/Supercars/68Yenko .

Yeah, that must be the one I was thinking of. For some reason I thought it was a 67.
