Check the VIN, it must start off with 13817 if it is a coupe or 13867 for a convertible. All true factory SS Chevelles built from 1966-1968 the vin# started off with 138. That changed in 1969 when the SS became an option package instead of a seperate model line.....RatPack..........

A couple things also are motor mounts on the frame and also the fuel line along the front are different on a BB car than a sb car.

Hey guys, I need some info quick. What do I need to look for on a '66 Chevelle to confirm whether it is in fact an original SS 396. I know Camaro's but Chevelle's are a different breed to me. It has the SS badges, glovebox door and a 12 bolt (all easily added). I haven't checked the casting #'s on the block but am assuming it's a transplant. Is there something in the body tag or VIN I can use? Thank you in advance,
-Mark

Otay (Buckwheat):
02C 5906
ST 66-13817 KAN 8052 BODY
TR 763-B F-F PAINT
2LGR ..an SS tag
..Is what I nabbed off the body tag today..which may have been removed and transplanted (strange rivets and pulled away from the firewall).
However, I did find the VIN tag:
138176K159471 which seemed to be untouched.
I haven't decoded the body tag...anyone?
I couldn't check for 3/8" fuel line as it has a fuel cell and no stock tank (some dumb-ass ran rubber all the way to the front). I did, however see a brace going from the upper rear control arms to the bottom control arms on each side (about a 45' angle). Is this SS396 specific?
These are the numbers I got off of the block:
F10C(?)592...which seemed to be ground down and restamped..(the ? by the C means kinda tough to read). Does this make any sense to anyone?
Any help is greatly appreciated (Thanks Tony for the e-mail) as I'm seriously considering this one. Asking price 10,500. did I mention that it has a 6-71 blower on it and Center Line's but a VERY solid body. I have access to the previous owner..and may have to see if he knows about the engine (current seller is claiming matching #'s).
Thanks in advance again guys!

Mark, this is a true SS396 Chevelle indicated by the VIN starting with 138. The trim tag decodes as:

02C: 3rd week of February 1966 is production build date, the 5906 is an order number I believe.

TR: 763-B (black bucket seat interior)
PNT: F F (solid paint in Marina Blue)

2 (options in this group are: L = 4 speed, G = console, and R = rear seat speaker)

The braces you see were on all factory SS Chevelles in 1966 and some L-79 4 speed Malibus that had the 12-bolt rear axle. I don't think that the trim tag has been changed from this car as it agrees with the vin as the car being built in Kansas City. I am not sure what the numbers on the block are but it does not seem that it is the original engine. You might have to look for the casting numbers and date and see how close it is for the production date of the car. I did not break down the other codes on the trim tag, only those that pertain to options and color........RatPack........
