I thought that everyone should know that the first "stocker" to cover a quarter mile in in under 9 seconds(without altitude adjustment) was a Camaro! NHRA legal "A" Stock Automatic car (427 ci). The car was probably not originally a real COPO Camaro but here are the stats: Bobby DeArmond, owner/driver, 1969 Chevrolet Camaro 427/auto, May 6th 2001 at Mission Dragway in BC Canada. THE CAR RAN A 9.997 SECOND RUN! I thought that everyone would enjoy getting this info.

If you type in this address you will see Steve Calabro "launching" Focino/Calabro A/SA Camaro at Englishtown NJ.

It is NOT the record car or the driver but it is a photo of a A/SA Camaro doing is cool wheelstand.

Andrew, That is a nice Camaro picture. Do you remember any 1969 Chevelle 427 cars running at Englishtown in a stock class?

I must say "Job well done" and thats from a Mopar man! You have to cogratulate them guys as I hear they are a "class act" and thats one for the history books in Stock Eliminator racing! Us Mopar guys were hoping Joe Aluise would be the first in his 63 Max Wedge as I think he ran a 10.01 out there and he is from Md like me! I love watching the wheelstanding Superstock and Stock cars! They were running fast out there at Mission as a 68 SS/AA Cuda ran 8.68 out there also! Kinda reminds me when the first time I saw a Superstocker run in the nines in 1969 and I was dissapointed that Bill Jenkins did it in his X/SS Camaro and got there before Ronnie Sox! Sure did like them days! So hats of to Bobby DeArmond for a great run! Ron

Under 10 sec is quick for a Super Stocker 427 Camaro. What were they running in 1969?low 11's if I remmember correctly. Grumpy ran under 10 sec in the first ever Pro Stock race in 1970 in his 68 Camaro but the Pro Stock rules had few limitations. They were running ZL1s, Hemis, SOHC 427 Fords, Boss 429s, and L88s with two big 4B Holleys. Some people say Grumpy ran a 430 CanAm block in that race but I have not been able to confirm that.

Joe,
The 9.997 second run was in NHRA's "Stock Eliminator" class. I have a video interview with "The Grump" and in the interview he said that he used a Can Am Block.

Andrew:

I'm just now responding to this thread, but it didn't go unnoticed by me when it was originally posted. I don't guess it really sunk in what Bobby and his Camaro had accomplished until last night, while I was over at the SuperStock Forums (http://superstockforum.com/) chatting with some guys.

Anyway, I was asking them about what class they felt the Deuces would have fallen in, when they asked if I was a racer. I told them I do occasionally, and after I told them I mostly race in a COPO Camaro, then they brought up Bobby and his ET. They said that the 427 Camaro is a pretty good combo, which means a LOT coming from hardcore racers. They did say that a 427 F**D and a 426 Mope ran "corrected" 9s not long before that, but they said that most racers feel that it's only a 9 if it's on the time slip. There some good reading on those forums, but it's pretty hardcore stuff, and gets pretty heated sometimes.

I meant to post this over a month ago, but ANOTHER A/SA car went into the 9's, and it was a 427/425hp Camaro! Congrats to Joey Sorensen!

......under the "FOUR DAYS IN MAY" heading you can see a video of Bobby DeArmand making his 9.99 run and just below that, where it says F word warning, is a cool video of a street legal 56/7 Corvette running a 7.34 !!!

My Dick Arons 1969 SS/E 427 Camaro ran a best of 10.74 in the high 120's mph, Dick said. I have a few articles from 1969 when they won with the Camaro and they were running in the low 11's and high 10's, but the articles said that most guys were sandbagging and if there was a red light, then they would shut down and not show what they really were capable of running. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
