I'm interested in using the 1970 L-34 Open Element air cleaner on my 1970 L-78 Camaro when the Dual Snorkel(enclosed element) correct air cleaner is not being used....I've been told that because of the unique right rear facing direction(NOT straight out to the right) of the air cleaner to valve cover breather TUBE that the 1970 L-34 Air Cleaner is a one year only on Camaros, Chevelles, and Novas.....Do you agree with my assertion, how difficult to find one of these 14" bases (I could use a repop lid), and what might the going price be?????
Thanks, Chuck/CamarosRus

Yes......L-78 1970 Camaro came with enclosed element Dual Snorkel air cleaner which I have. I am wanting to also find and own the L-34 open element air cleaner to use on my L-78 engine.......Chuck

On my original 1969 open element air cleaner, the tube for the crankcase vent is not welded in place. It is pretty tight in the air cleaner base, but you can turn it. So one like I have would be fine for a 70 model. On the repros that I have seen the tube cannot be moved, but I think that you could probably free it up and move it.

I am certainly no expert----but I have real---real personal experience with two L78 Camaros---and both had the non-silenced air cleaner. I can look at one in about a few seconds and it has the original---and it ain't snorkeling.

I have moved several of the tubes over the years--just break the spots loose--move till it fits and reweld.

I believe both the (impossible to find) dual snorkle and the open element air cleaners were used on '70 L-78 Camaros as well as non-cowl induction '70 LS-6 Chevelles.

A 1969 open element Air Cleaner is different then a 1970 open element air cleaner.1969 used a Higher rise Aluminum intake manifold,so the Air cleaner base sits lower.

I am confused----are you saying that the L-78 used a dual snorkel enclosed air cleaner in '70???

I still have the idea that you could make the repro 69 air cleaner base fit by twisting the crankcase vent tube to the rear. In case it helps, this (http://www.sonic.net/bbdon/free/70l78.jpg) is what it should look like.

Wouldn't the 69 (if it in fact has a lower drop base) work for the time being? Hood clearance on the 2nd gens is at a premium so it seems that that would be the way to go both for function and price...

Will this one do the trick?

Here's my latest "opinion" on the 1970 L-34 Air Cleaner......I just talked to my L-78 seller (I'm the new owner) and he states that the 70 L-34 Air Cleaner base is the SAME as earlier ones except for the length and angle of the breather tube.....so if somebody out there had a 69 or older L-34 base for sale I could remove the tube and fabricate a new copy of the 70 style breather tube using my dual snorkel as a sample....or should I just buy a reproduction and modify it, at least it would have a "nice" lid.......are all the misc repops the same or is someones better?????.....ALSO I believe that ALL the 1970 Camaro L-78's (which were only produced after Jan 1, 1970 when new EPA laws mandated that the engine not be as noisy as with open element L-78 engines) came with the Dual Snorkel Air Cleaner......the assy manual only shows the dual snorkel......thanks, Chuck

Hmmmmmm........ I guess that my April '70 L78 Camaro open element AC filter will not work?

Oh, this came from an original one owner Calif. car.

GM used both, and when they didn't have a particular part........they used what they had. Don't think they stopped the production line to do exactly as some people would like to believe they did.
