I recently bought this racer (See Attachment) from a gentilemen in Nebraska who drove the car in 1969 through 1974 for a Nebraska Chevy Dealer. This Dealer was Mac's Chevrolet / Pontiac in Crete and Al MacNamara. The car was bought new off the show-room floor in 1969 just in time to go NHRA racing. He campaigned it with great success. He raced with a 4 speed and a turbo 400. He also made a clutch driven turbo 400 and raced that configuration also. He then sold the car after 1974 season to the next owner. This owner raced the car on and off, but mostly drove it on the street, he worked for H & H Chevy. He grenaded the engine in a flywheel incident that pushed up off the crank and sliced threw the block. The 4 speed bell housing was blow-proof and feet were saved. A iron short block L-88 was installed next. Some time in the '80's the original owner bought the car back stipped off all the stickers and cared for the paint. This paint cost around $1500.00 in 1969. He also removed the L-88 and installed a LS-6 short block with the orginal iron 840 heads and aluminum intake and one of the orginal B&M turbo 400 with a brake.

The history is deep with this racer and I plan on preserving the best I can.

By the way this car came with lot of engines, engine parts, transmissions, heads, carbs and other vintage go fast parts.

Rich, welcome to the site and a very neat day two car to say the least. Leave it as it is. That brought back memories. /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

Rich, like <font color="red">SS427 </font color> says, that brings back some good memories. Leave the car the way it is as those "Day 2" cars are what a lot of people like to see. <font color="blue">Whitetop </font color> if you are out there this car is almost as wild as the "Stang" you have. /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif ..........RatPack...........................

Yes, you all are right and I thank you for all the comments and hospitality.

On the trip back from picking the car up, we had my son with us and of course we had to stop at every rest stop on the road. We actually turned the reactions of others into a road side game, with all of the thumbs-up, comments and touches to the car. Believe me there were a lot of touches to the paint, wild.

I am still doing a lot of research on the car, everyone so far that owned this camaro has a history with it. There is talk that this car was a COPO and some say it was a 396/375 and one even said aluminum block. All I know right now that it was a big block car with a four speed. I know it was not a ZL-1 car but it may of been a transplant. I am waiting to hear back from someone who knows.

Somewhere near an old defunct race track, (Huskers?), there is a resturant that has a wall of fame with a picture(s) of this car in 1970 wearing all out race garb.

Now I noticed if you look at the car under flouresent lights you can see where all of the original stickers were, and it you listen real harder you can hear the tires bark from the 3 - 4 shift as it launched down the track.

Was this Camaro Featured in one of the CarCraft/HotRod mags back in the late 70's early 80's?
I was at a swap not to long ago,and could swear I saw this in one of those.I just don't remember the issue???

Welcome to the site. It's a cool looking paint job
What is the build date on the trim tag? Some of the racers like Bill Jenkins who bought early cars got 375hp cars then converted them to ZL1 or L72.

I don't know the answer to that, I have to ask more questions. I want to give the guys I have been talking to break for the holiday. I do know it was campaigned in So. Cal for a while with NHRA. I sent you an email if you could keep me posted.

JoeC
The build date is 02D;

Cowl tag:

12347 NOR 266515
711 57 57
02D X66

Current engine is a 1970 LS-6 450 hp
T0127CRV with a partial vin of a Chevelle

Trans is an automatic TH400 with a brake, original clutch pedal is still hanging and wired up. original carpet and floor is cut out in the spot for a four speed.

It has a 6K/7K tach with a 120 MPH speedo, bb heater core and cover.

I was told that the 840 heads and 163 intake are original and are date casted on heads #1 K118 and #2 K208 and the intake was 1.2.69. The carb is a 850 Holley non-original.

The radiator is a 4 row curved neck, has weld plate on drivers rear frame rail, what is left of a single line fuel line, front power disk brakes with rear pressure valve under booster, BE0214G2 E with welded spring perches.

The rear tail panel has to the left of the bow-tie two tiny holes drilled with inserts for a metal dealer emblem (yenko?)

I have the L-88 short block, a set of aluminum heads plus the clutch driven t-400.

New Pics just arrived. The first was taken in 1969 in texas and is showing the Mac's logo. While the second was taken in 1970 with the Shaker logo.

I am still trying to locate and contact the original painter who was Dell Star, from I believe Star Auto Body, Mason City, Iowa.

If any one has any info please PM me.

Thanks

That's a really neat car.... I think this is really what they were meant to be. I notice there's a bowtie in a black grille and an X66 car. Possibly a copo car? I know some Yenkos were X66. Were their grilles black like the SS or silver like the copo's?

Cool car. The old pictures show the cowl hood, no SS396 emblems, has a BE rear dated perfectly for it, sure looks like it could have COPO potential. But it looks a little late for one of the early Yenko X66 COPO's which were 01A and 01B. Is this car possibly a Canadian car?

I have not check with GM Canada yet. I am waiting to hear back from the original owner and driver Charlie Jacobs. Now I did speak with the Sponser and owner of the dealership Mac's Chevrolet and he says this car was a COPO. But that is not confirmed. He also told me that he may still have the original paper work on this vehicle in storage. I'm hoping. In looking around the car recently I notice that the ZL-2 selonoid is still on the hood, but no wiring left or flapper, the spoilers were added and no build sheet to be found.

I was wondering would of the fenders be pierced for ss 396 badging? I will look at that next.

Check the fuse block under the dash for the wiring that goes to the hood that connects to the fuse block. I think there is a known X66 Canadian COPO but I don't know for sure all the details. Maybe someone else that knows will chime in. I still think it's a great example of period race car that was bought strictly for that purpose.

Jeff,
There are no "officially" confirmed or verified X66 COPOs other than Yenkos, but now is a good time to correct me if my statements are incorrect. /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

That's why I was asking. I saw comments about an X66 Canadian COPO so I thought someone might know for sure. Rich, if you don't mind posting your VIN, maybe someone here can help identify if it fits into a build range or possible Yenko.

Jeff,

Yes the wiring is there. The VIN is 124379N601701. The history keeps pouring in. I just received two racing programs from Corn Huskers Raceway that contain accounts of the 1969 and 1970 point race standings and winnings. The driver in 1969 was a Charlie Jacob and in 1970 was a Jim Hayes.

After a few detours and distractions I am finally starting the complete restoration of my Super Stock vintage racer project. The paint will be a B@*ht to duplicate. A few museums in Nebraska have shown some interest in its completion and return to the &quot;West Central Division&quot;

See my link to the first of a series of videos documenting the cars progress. Thanks TJ for all your help with the production and publication of the video it turned out fantastic.

Wow,awsome car. I was watching the video and was about to haul off on you for wanting to repaint it until I saw the passenger side. the outstanding condition of the rest of the car makes it all worthwhile though. If you are in New Jersey,I know the perfect place to reproduce that paint job. They were in Jersey City back in the day,and painted a ton of the super high end prostock and modified production cars with all the fish scales and lace paint, they moved to PA a few years ago. Both the father who did the paint work originally and the son handle the work, and if you want a shop that does this kind of work every day and wins awards everywhere they go,you should call them. They are also very reasonably priced, and dont do any bread and butter type work, its only custom one of a kind race cars for them. The shop was formerly known as G&amp;K customs in Jersey City, but now goes by the name of Korek Designs. (thats the K in G&amp;K) If you find a lot of old literature from back in the day you will find that many of the really decked out prostocks and modifieds from this area in the 70's were done by them.

This isnt a plug for a buddy's shop, this is real advice about a shop that did the award winning cars from back in the day who is still doing both modern and retro cars.

Good luck with it,and keep us posted.

Awesome car Rich. I just learned the history of your car while trying to track down the block from my 70 ls6. I live just outside of Omaha, Ne where you purchased the car back in 02. From the history I have, I was told the block to my ls6 went into the R D Shaker back in the 70's. I recently just uncovered this ls6 car about a month ago after it had been stored away for about 25 years. Could you please call Steve at 402-968-3287 with any info. Thanyou very much.

Triple that...awesome car... and what you are planning on for restoration to its glorious racing days heritage. Mac Chevrolet from Crete was known for some COPO and the one and only one ZL1 sold in Nebraska through that dealership. I have collected a few Nebraska raced cars and this is definitely one of the &quot;holy grail&quot; drag cars raced from this area. Can't wait to see the finished pics when your done!

I think this is your car, I have had these photos for quite a few years. The paint is SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT on the front fenders as far as I can tell...

I have no idea how I arrived with them other than the internet...

After finally getting in touch with Rich about a year ago, he led me to the current owners of my LS6 motor. Then after nine months of negotiations I finally went out to Maine and picked the motor up this past April. The motor is back in the engine bay and we are trying to stock pile some parts so we can get ready for the frame off.

My dad was good friends with Al and the service manager at Mac Chevrolet. Ron Taylor In lincoln nebraska could probably give you any imfo you wanted on that car. Your correct that it isnt a ZL1. Mac did order a new ZL1 along with so many other camaros to be able to get one. One of the camaros was my dads 69 z28 on the same transport. I was told when the transport arrived they pushed the ZL1 off and into the shop, pulled the motor, painted it black and put it in mac's camaro. You have a very neat historic car. wish my dad was still around to show him this...

I found this thread researching a car to post on my @6789Camaro Instagram page - more info on this COPO: http://blog.cars-on-line.com/2013/06/20/1969-camaro-super-stock/

What is the current status of this Camaro?

The car was sold to a good friend of mine (J Bridgewater) in about 1970, and Jim Hayes drove it some of the time. (Hays may have become a partner, don't know) I've seen some other pictures of the car in about 1970-71 on other sites, with Bridgewater standing next to the car, with his name on the side (and another name) (Mac's was removed or overwritten on door) They(he) may have only owned it for a year or two. I heard a while back that Bridgewater may live in Colo. now.
Another friend had an L-88 (dealer bought short block &amp; heads (Hulac Chev Omaha) that could have ended up in the Camero, but don't know for sure)
They were all friends of mine from HS. (except Hayes)

X66 car. Too late for an X66 Yenko. 5500 redline tach. Ran SS/E which fits for 396/325 hp I think.

I have an L35 block less than 400 cars from the car posted. Possibly from the same dealer but I have not checked.

Probably not. Common paint scheme back then. Too much orange and not enough white in my opinion.

I was friends with Roland & Ray Griffith for many years.....Roland ordered this
L78 68 Camaro from University Chev in Seattle. For a while Roland drove this
car street and it was also street raced. I remember Aluminum Heads were added
and a different factory cam (L88 ??).....This Camaro was a NHRA Natl Record in
SS/D. Also was raced at NHRA Winternationals and Div 6 Races.....Scott Griffith
(Ray's son) owns this LOW Milage Car Today.
