The Brown Camaro from Wagners showed up today at the Scottsdale Classic and was promoted as a real COPO. The suspect bidding reached about 70K but the asking price was around 90K. There were not more than 20 Bidders present. At Russo and Steele check in was the ever moving White with Blue interior Lamar Walden COPO. Weather was about 73*.

Thanks for the update. When Reggie owned the Brown car, did he promote it as a real COPO or a clone? If he shows up at the auction, you ought to ask him about it. It's about 10 degrees here in NJ right now, I'm just happy my truck started. Hope you didn't forget your sun block! /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Got to Barrett-Jackson yesterday and there isn't much there yet.. We did see the '69 BLUE Yenko Camaro. There were a couple of nice '69 Z-28's also. It is Carroll Shelby's 80th Birthday so there are alot of Shelby's, Mustangs and Cobra's. The big auction days are Friday and Saturday, the Speed Vision Channel will be broadcasting Both days for sure. I will post more later. Like Charley said it is in the low 70's and feels even warmer. Update: Went over to Russo-Steele today and Ole Red Alert is upfront on display (AWESOME CAR) also next to it is an LS-6 with (26 Miles) Red Original. 429 Boss Mustang and a Hemi Cuda, also (2) nice '67 SS Chevelles. We are getting ready to go to the Big GALA at Barrett-Jackson tonight and tomorrow they will start to auction some cars. Stopped at a grocery store and picked up a trader and it had an ad for a '69 ZL-l Camaro (really) all it said was Expensive.. I'll keep posting. Mark /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

Any real JL8 Camaros at the auctions? I need to make sure I wasted all my money on the right car. Think I could pay off my mortgage with the money I have tied up my car at this point. Maybe one of these days I'll learn. /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Guys, Went to the Big GALA last night at Barrett-Jackson and there were several cars on display: Reggie Jackson's ZL-l (white) Claiming Original Engine, the hood was shut and when guys tried to open the hood they would get stopped. Don Johnson's HEMI CUDA (yellow) was also on display and some guy opened the hood and the engine was a 440. An ALL Original L-88 Corvette (blue-original paint) also on display. Saw a Nice Red CROSSRAM Camaro at Barrett-Jackson. Russo-Steele had a YENKO (clone) Camaro red/white air and a 454 Engine. Auctions start today and we'll post some prices later. I met up with Charlie and hope to see somemore guys today. Mark

Does anyone know if there is a live link to BJ action?

COPO
01-16-2003, 04:45 PM
Mark, about a year & 1/2 ago I sold Reggie Jackson what is believed to be the original block to his white ZL-1 camaro. The car was originally owned by Lamar Walden and matches the white COPO that has previously been discussed on the site. The block sat in Lamar's shop all these years. I carefully examined the casting and stampings both partial VIN and assembly date and it looked legit to me. Reggie would not sell me the car, so I ended up selling him the block. I'm not sure whether it was ever installed in the car once I shipped it to Reggie.

Reggie has the block and had it repaired. I don't think it is in it but I think it goes with the car. I am taking some pics but this new Camera is way too smart for me. So it wil take some time to post more pics. Saw a really cool 54 Chevy 3500 pickup with a Factory turbohydramatic 4 speed auto from the factory. Also saw a 72 Chevy pickup with 1200 miles. The Variety of really neat stuff is what always amazes me. Alot of very nice NO RESERVE stuff.

A '71 Black/white Chevelle SS Convertible (clone) went for $18,000 -- a '55 Chevy Convertible went in the $60's. The Big Buck cars will start tomorrow. Mark /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

Belair62 The cars new home is Phoniex AZ. I watched it leave MI with Select Transport. Beautiful car with all matching componets on the Z. The tires wheels and trim rings are all original GM. The engine compartment shows super nice as the crossram intake was perfect. That car pulled very hard with the off road racing cam. I was sad to see it go down the road. Starting another one real soon with JL8's this time.

On the red cross ram Z/28 ,if I remember right this car sold on e-bay about 6 months ago for $34,800 and the new owner wants $54,000 at his dealership in Florida. Also I believe the car is color coded for another color maybe blue? I rember talking to the old owner when it was on e-bay. Jeff H. no matter how much you have in the JL8 car, you can not go wrong. I saw a cross ram R/S Z/28 JL8 car for sale for $75,000 on the TRM website about 2 weeks ago and they said it sold in 2 days.

Yes, those guys have very limited knowledge - they are really making themselves look stupid.

They have no idea what's hot in the musclecar market right now. sad.

I think they need to replace these guys with some Musclecar guys like maybe Tom Shaw of Musclecar Review, or some major restoration guys.

I mean , how hard can it be, they know well in advance what cars are running, do some homework boys, and make a few notes. Goofs.

JoeC

The Speed Channel announcers don't know their butts from their elbows. There is some great American racing history represented by those cars and they don't have a clue.
That 57 Chevy was a factory hot rod that some people call The Black Widow. Chevy even sold a book (1957) printed by the Chevrolet Central Office that showed you how to build your own Stock Car for racing. I have the book. I have read that Smokey Yunick help write it. They tell you how to order the base car with FI 283.
The Speed Channel announcers should do a little research. Just doing a 2 minute search on the net you can find a lot of info. Found this on the FI 57

Dubbed the black widow, this light weight coupe took Buck Backer to the 1957 NASCAR championship. Just 3 races into the season, NASCAR banned the use of fuel injected, factory backed cars, claiming they had an unfair advantage over the independent racers. Baker switched over to a singe 4 barrel carb on his 283 cu. in. small block. He went on to win 17 races, easily clinching the championship.

I can see why Reggie wasn't happy. That car would have gone higher if people knew the history of it. IMO

sixtiesmuscle
01-18-2003, 01:46 PM
No matter how many times they say essentially "if it's in the Reggie collection, it MUST be real", the smart buyers don't fall for it. If that '57 was a "real" Black Widow it would have been at least double, IMO, of course. Maybe the stuff he's shedding from his collection is finally getting the premium it deserves, a negative one.

As far as the dolts announcing. Mute! Wonder what they'll say when the Yenko Chevelle goes through for $125,000 PLUS tonight.

Belair62
01-18-2003, 02:41 PM
Hey did the Chevelle go through ? Not bad money for a 62 409 Impala.. Although I wasn't there to see it I thought the 66 Impala 427-425 horse car went pretty cheap. They kept saying it was really a nothing car except for the big motor.

Reggies car was not a black widow but just a regular F.I. 283-if it was even originally F.I. Reggies car is a 210 model, the black widows came as 150 series "stripper" business coupes (kind with small side "spear" trim and no back seat. Most of the BW I have seen where white and black two tone. Also the BW had the 6 lug special race wheels with no hub caps. Reggies just had the regular 5 lug with small 210 series dish hubcaps.

I liked that 67 Fairlane 'R' code 427 with 225 original miles. I thought it would have gone for more than $70K though. I was at a hockey game and it was in between periods so I went into the little brew pub they have in the arena and had them turn on the auction. Other people watching had no clue what these cars are worth and they were all stunned at the prices the cars were selling for. I'll be watching tonight.

Norm reynolds
01-18-2003, 04:25 PM
Did any body see when an announcer tried to interview Reggie he kept walking away
He looked tired and disgusted Then you see Alice Copper jumping up and down and happy to be there Reggies cars last night were nice cars but not original all modified
but nice Joe is right about the black widow as bein a 150 series some where I have a write up on it As for the English announcer and Brock Yates give me a break a 66 big block impala not worth much and a 409 is nothing more that a truck motor and that a car
With a 283 is worth more ?? /ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

You are right Dave. That 57 Chevy is not a black widow race car. It is a street car that looks like a black widow race car. That's why I thought it would sell for a high price. Maybe it's not a real FI car but it looked like Reggie thought it would go higher.

I walked through most of the cars today out in the field below the auction tent. The '67 Yenko Camaro has a no reserve sign on it. Future Classics has a White Chevelle L-78 that will be going across. Most of the LS-6 Chevelles that I saw were going through on Sunday. I do have some pictures that I will try to post tomorrow. I have a pic of the L-78 Chevelles build sheet. A nice unrestored Lemans Blue Z-28 went for $32 or so. I was surprised at the two GT-40s that went across and neither one broke $400K. If anyone is interested in the pics before I get them posted, send me an e-mail, and I will forward them on.

Reggie News--His '70 YENKO NOVA went for either $47,000 or $48,000 (the paint was bad and it had bucket seats). When he got BOO'D because of the ZL-1 reserve of $330,000 he said it didn't bother him because he's been boo'd before!! Gary Holub went up to him and asked him what his reserve was and when he said $330,000 Gary just walked away. Reggie was NOT too happy and he just didn't seem to care. More news the Boss 429 (The LAWMAN) would NOT START!!! It went for $120,000. Over at Russo-Steele Auction -- Ole RED ALERT was a No Sale-the bidding got up to either $80,000 or $90,000--when they drove it into the auction area poeple started Clapping it sounded great!! The (26 MILE) LS-6 was up to $245,000 and the owner Did Not Sale. Also at the end of Barrett-Jackson the '68 YENKO Camaro (blue) was RUSHED thru and the Auctioneer brought the hammer down at $98,000 and some people were still bidding on it and the Owner was Mad...Sorry can't remember some of the exact figures on a couple of the cars. Had a Great Time, now have to go back home to tempertures in the single degits--COLD!!! Mark /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

Mark, What was the reserve on that 26 mile LS6 chevelle? Just wondering because I got an unrestored black 69 RS/Z28 with very low miles!

Did the red 69 crossram Z28 @ Russo & Steele auction sell?

Another question for Mark if he has time /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

You mentioned on an earlier thread about a 69 Chevelle SS, Blue, 325 HP sold for $50K on Friday. Man, that is big money. Did you by any chance get a look at that car?

I just finished reading the list of 1969 camaros that have sold at the auction and what they sold for. I just saw a yellow crossram 4-wheel disc brake Z/28 sell for $32,000 a green COPO for $49,000 and some other Z/28s in the low to mid 20s. When you factor in the fees paid to sell these cars at this auction, does it look like the prices are leveling off?

Figures mean nothing if you don't see the cars or the paperwork. The prices you stated would indicate non documented cars that are most likely not "real", IMO, of course. Hopefully the folks that saw the cars will report.

Anyone have a chance to look at the gold 69 L-78 Rag that was there #755.It was supposed to be a unrestored car, black top and interior that sold for 97 and change. This was a local car in Cleveland that was sold last year or two for approx 39k.What a jump!Anybody else know the car?I find this hard to believe....From the photos I see from BJ,it has been touched up and detailed under the hood since I saw it last.......97,200 /ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif

92646..I think you were looking at old results, not this years. I think Reggies Deuce was mostly orig. paint that was presentable. There was a very nice Blue 68Z, not sure of the price. 67 Z looked decent, somebody probably got a deal. Reggies white Yenko Chevelle is a nice car. It is a older Tinnell resto with the white Cad plated bolts that Dwiggins always insisted on. The Olympic gold 69 L78 convert was a neat car that every time the current owner touched it he screwed something up. He bolted on a spoiler, he painted the subframe, he painted the rockers, looks like he clear coated the hood. Close examination of the orig. blacked out tail panel seems to confirm Gloss Black versus Semi. Red 69 Crossram Z28 at Russo and Steele sold for about 60K. The body seems to have been prepped wrong and the paint is cracking, shrinking etc. Pro Touring Dodge Charger with the Viper engine brought 105K. Boyds Aluma Truck only brought 80K, he must be very sick. There had to be a forune in that truck. My old Blue 68 Yenko brought 98K. I heard the Lamar Walden COPO sold for good money but I don't remember how much. There was something for everybody there. People paid stupid money and People got great deals.

Jeff,

The 67 Z is a nice driver and probably sold for what it was worth IMHO. Wagner's had the car 2 years ago and I was offered it for $30K - I thought it was worth about $28K at the time. They took it to BJ and got $35K for it. The new owner emailed me and wanted $45K about 6 months later! I guess he didn't get $45K, eh?

The car has no docs, 10 foot paint with metalic clumping here and there, replaced quarters, some roof/door dents. Great car to hit the cruise nights with.

Just returned home!! Too much fun! Great to see a bunch of you guys there. Flew home seated next to a German journalist who is doing a story for the German issue of Playboy on the auction, very interesting to get her perception. The truck I bought is really nice. He had it for 12 years, and completed it with all new chrome and stainless, 3" stainless Borla exhaust, new paint and interior, 383 stroker motor, factory air and tach. The fuel tank was replaced with a Blazer 30 gal tank under the bed. I figured that the $20k I paid would just about cover the resto costs if you had a free truck to start with!! It should arrive tomorrow. The white COPO at Russo Steele sold for $89k. The biggest surprise to me was the red '69 crossram Z that sold for $67k plus 8% buyers commission!! Also got a kick out of the guy that bought the Tony Stewart Winstoncup car for $89k!! So as I have stated in earlier posts "just because it is a REGGIE car is it really worth 25%+ more?" /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif Jim

Wow! Sounds like the russo and steele auction had some big money buyers in the audiance. Good job on that little 69 red crossram Z car bringing $67,000.00. I wasn't just talking about the cracks in the 1/4. There was shrinkage and activity in the paint just about everywhere on the car. I guess you could cut and rub it but it will still keep coming back.

OK I'm a dweeb. Everyone is right I was looking at old dates. I could not take the Speedvision show anymore so I went to web site instead. I got so excited by the prices that I did not look at all the details. But it could have been worse, I was going to the bank Monday to secure a credit line so I could go buy a supercar that I thought I could afford now.Its amazing I just missed the red crossram car when it sold on e-bay for $34,800 six months ago and now it sells for $67,000. At this rate I will never afford a neat car. To everybody sorry for the mistake.

Another very good time. Saw a lot of old friends, and some friends I'd only known online until now. I hung out with my family Saturday afternoon, and went back to the auction Saturday night. I saw the gold '69 Camaro L78 convertible go across for 90K and the white '70 Chevelle L78 convertible go for just under 100K. There was a bit of a frenzy going on, for even though the crowd had thinned, the bidding was hot and heavy. I watched in disbelief as a Plum Crazy '70 Coronet R/T Hemi/4sp w/18K orig went across the block for--$155K--and it was a hardtop, not a convertible!

My take on some of the cars:
'69 L78 Convert-Charley is dead on-a nice car that has been kind of buggered by a well intentioned but clueless owner.
'67 Z28 - Seemed like a deal, but when you look at it close, the C-pillars are both showing evidence of the 1/4 panel grafts, and there are some other paint hiccups if you look. Seemed like a good deal, but if you're picky, you're going to paint it again. No documentation displayed.
Nicer '69 Pace Car Convert- Looked like an exceptionally done car, but the COLUMN SHIFTER/NO CONSOLE deal sort of limited its appeal to me, and some bidders, I'm sure. I bet a 396/4sp car in this shape would have done HUGE money.
Orange '69 Z28- Black stripes but no vinyl top? Stripes painted under the spoiler, and I don't think it had any cowl induction guts. This was JUST A CAR, $40K was too much. $25K should have been the number.

Friday's Russo and Steele started with a whisper, but the bidding grew as the night progressed. In some ways impressive, but obviously still in need of development. The haphazard parking, and small tent were limiting. If I had a killer high-end car, I think BJ is still the ticket for maximum return.

I brought the family this year, and balanced car stuff with family outings. Scottsdale has some great zoos and awesome, huge family parks. As a result, I didn't get burned out on auction stuff, and probably had my best time since I started going almost 10 years ago.

Some things you can count on - Jim (NWYENKO) went to Arizona and came back with a new car/(truck). He's 3 for 3 now, I think.......(Good to see you and LaDonna, Jim, as always /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif )

I did a freeze frame on the engine on the Yenko Chevelle. It could use some underhood detail work. The hood hinges and PB booster look bright silver in color, alt fan looks black and neg bat cable was bolted to alt bracket which I think is incorrect for this car. These are minor fixes but that big ole cowl induction setup may take some work to remove. The cowl induction requires a big slot or big holes cut in the firewall. The firewall would need welding/painting maybe need to remove heater box, fender, wheelwell to do the job right. The white black color combo with Yenko stripe looked nice on TV.

Rob, Towards the end of the Auction they were RUSHING the cars thru--the NOVA was auctioned off during the commercial, I was almost going to bid on it at the end but by the time I paid the fees and transport and Full tax plus paint and stripes well I passed. After the TV coverage there were still alot more cars to be auctioned off. The '68 YENKO Camaro was rushed thru and the Seller was upset as people were still bidding on it and there was no reserve and it went for only $98,000. Phil and I talked to him after the auction and he was Not happy about it. Reggie was MAD after the ZL-1 and he didn't seem to care about the Yenko Chevelle, he probably should have talked alittle more about the YENKO as he does talk them up good.. As for the Allan the English Announcer he FAVORED anything Foreign and during the commercials he acted as if he was bored and he evened yawned. I think they should have a seperate announcer for the Amercian Cars.. The hit of the show was Don Johnson, he was very friendly and funny.. Also they would cut away to commercials due to the fact that a couple of times there were fighting on the stage over mistakes on price and in one case an owner bought his car back at the last minute as he felt his car was going too cheap... I'll be back next year again as it is an experience to be there. Mark /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

I was working Friday night in Tacoma, WA loading the CSX (SeaLand) Anchorage bound for Alaska.(almost everything shipped to Alaska goes through Tacoma).....anyway amongst the many new cars that I always see there was a car open rack container with two of the Barrett-Jackson cars. One was a 64 Chevelle Dk Blue convertable and the other a "pro-street" (kinda) 72 Red Camaro no reserve car that evidently sold for 13K http://www.barrett-jackson.com/auctionresults/common/cardetail.asp?id=172421
Some of thise non reserve cars dont seem too highly priced , BUT what is the buyers premium on them????

NWYENKO
02-01-2003, 01:20 PM
Chuck, the buyers premium is 8%. Don't forget the shipping costs of almost always at least a grand! Last year Russo Steele shipped for free but I didn't hear mention of that this year. Oh by the way Barrett jackson refunds your $300 bidder fee if you buy a car. That helped me justify the purchase to LaDonna!! /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif Jim

Chris396
02-01-2003, 09:20 PM
I think the no reserve % fee should be 5% instead of 8%. A 2% savings for no reserve isn't that much. If the price to sellers was halved I think it would encourage more no reserve sellers.

03-12-2003, 11:33 PM
Guys I might have missed this in this long thread. I am reading Automobile Magazine April 2003 issue and they have a "On the Block" section that has a couple of Barrett Jackson highlights. They feature a 1969 COPO. Here is the article verbatim.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro. S/N 124379N640481, engine 10423MN. Hugger Orange over black vinal. Central Office Production Order (COPO) installed 427-cubic-inch, 425 horse power V8 four speed. Dog-dish hubcaps, Z28 dual exhaust, 140-mph speedometer, cowl induction hood. Numbers matching, fully documented. restored to a very high standard.

Sold at $56,100. At the height of muscle-car madness, COPO Camaros were just about the baddest boys on the block. Only 1,000 were made but since they are so easy to fake, there are probably twice that many replica COPO's running around today. The value with this car was the combination of it's documented heritage and it's high quality restoration. Another $5,000 wouldn't have been suprising.

Guys doesn't that sound awfully cheap? I would think that in today's market that a COPO Camaro in that color if in fact it was "restored to a very high standard" and is "documented" would have brought more money. Does anybody have any info on this car? Did any of you see this car at the auction?

NWYENKO
03-12-2003, 11:49 PM
Frank, I think that is from the Barrett Jackson Auction last year. If you search this site around the end of Jan last year I think there is discussion about this car. Reggie had an orange COPO there last year but I thought it brought a little more money than that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gifJim

03-12-2003, 11:55 PM
Jim I would be suprised if the car was from last year. Why would they feature a Jan 2002 auction in April of 2003 when they just had a auction at Barret Jackson in Jan 2003? In that article the Nash Bridges Cuda was featured along with the Elanor Mustang that they said sold for $194,000 when I saw it roll through at I think $167,000? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Frank,

I just looked at my April Hemmings, and they show a Hugger Orange COPO that sold for $56,100 at the January R-M auction in Phoenix. They say it had once been owned by Boyd Coddington. Being at the R-M auction would explain why no one saw it at B-J! With all the auctions they hold down there in the span of a couple weeks, it gets confusing.
