There is currently a licence plate frame on ebay.
Although acknowledged as a reproduction it looks nothing like the ones I have seen.
Does anyone know if it approximates any of the real ones and which year ???
Hope the link worked if not please check the auction under Dana Chevrolet. I think this is only the 2nd item for Dana I have seen on ebay in many years,

Someone posted an Authentic picture of a Real Dana Chevrolet license plate frame not to long ago.It was either from a Road test article in a magazine,or from someones actual car...I believe it was from an actual car found now that I think about it.I remember it was similar to that one on Ebay with ~DANA~ cast into the bottom, and SOUTHGATE on top.The Lettering was in White. Both with a Red Background. The Chrome frame was the same used one in that auction now,as they are still available today. They are General frames cast by a few different manufacturers:Robert W. Brown Co.,& Auto License Frames, both in California. That one on Ebay has the lettering lazer cut into Plastic Laminate.

So what's the story on the car with the original Dana frames and black CA plates?

GMH454
03-28-2004, 06:41 AM
Thanks for that. Not only is the seller, selling less than close repros but has decided to turn Dick Guldstrand into a "engine builder" as well. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Guess the distance from the Traco shop must have been too far for Dana to travel.
Might as well stuff Chevy racing history while making a buck. (Bondurant was Peyton Cramer's shoe of choice until he flipped his Can Am car )
I love ebay.

Someone paid $89.88 for this One reproduction Frame.
I Suspect we will Start seeing More Famous Dealership names being offered because of this.

GMH454

Yeah saw it myself, even if it was a correct Repo that's not cheap. Very careful description. He uses the word "detail" but not in relation to the plate. Never says it's a accurate reproduction, just that it is essential to complete the resto of your true Dana.

Wonder if there will now be people running round telling others that this is a "true " repo plate frame.
Next it will be this is a "true" plate frame (forget the repro)
I think the hobby is getting harder. It used to be a challenge to find the information, now the biggest challenge is to sort the facts from the garbage, with the garbage growing all the time.

I am new to the discussion board, but contacted Rob four years ago about my car. I have a sunfire yellow 67 435 horse Corvette coupe Dana apparently kept for their personal use and sold as a "new" used car in 1970. I also have a 67 GT500 and recently found out that Dana was also an authorized Shelby dealership; a friend of mine has a 66 GT 350 that is an original Dana car!

The Corvette's invoice shows it was delivered to Guardian Chevrolet Brea CA. Dana (Mr. G. W. Pickens) issued the Protect-O-Plate in April of 67. The owner listed on the Protect-O-Plate explained he actually purchased the car in 1970, which coincided with the handwritten date on the back cover.

The Sting Ray is equipped with California smog, close ratio four speed, 370 rear gear, N11 exhaust, F41 suspension, redline tires, power disk brakes, am/fm, power windows and tinted glass (See Pix). It is a well documented 435 horse car with a complete owner history and its original window sticker, tank sheet, owners manual and Protect-O-Plate. The first owner also told me he replaced the original 427 with an L88!

The car still has its original transmission and differential, and I went to great pains to assemble a part number/date code tri power 427 to look like it was never out of the car. The Corvette has been re-painted, but the undercarriage is unrestored and the interior is original except for the carpet.

Very nice Vette. interesting the note on Dana, selling Shelbys, as Peyton Cramer, one of the principals was part of Shelbys Calif team, as was Bob Bundurant (one of Danas drivers at Le Mans.)

Another interesting piece of Dana/Shelby trivia is the lug wrench used on the 67 GT 500 with the optional Magstar rims. The Mustang wrench for the standard Ford 13/16" lugs wouldn't work with the 3/4" nuts used with the Kelsey Hayes rims, so what do you think ol' Shelby used? You guessed it; he just called his buddy Peyton and ordered a bunch of Corvette lug wrenches! LOL, I've seen the Shelby guys pay $200 for one of these and I think you can still get them from GM for less than twenty bucks!

Been meaning to post the Dana frame I had made up for my Corvette. I had a couple extras done to help cover the special run cost and will be running them on ebay. IMHO, much nicer than the ones that are currently available through other sources. Sorry about the high opening bid but the short run and artwork cost me a fortune https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://members.cox.net/detailshop/pictures/reproDANAframe.jpg

I was at the NCRS regional in Wildwood, NJ this weekend and met a guy from Canada with a blue 65 396 Corvette coupe that was sold from Don Yenko Chevrolet!

It would have set me back around a grand to have them made up that way and I didn't think I could even come close to covering my costs, so I went with the vinyl style that is very common on dealer plates today.

Joe,

Your Corvette was at the NCRS NJ Regonial this past weekend. I took detailed pictures of your car, including a picture of the license plate frame. I will send you some pictures.

There were more Corvettes with License plate frame from hi-po dealerships then I have ever seen. It is certainly a new trend.

As a little of additonal info from a Crammer interview. When he left Shelby, he wrote to Ford to get approval for a Ford dealership originally. From Shelby he took (purchased) a group of six 66 Shelbys (three carry over 66 cars and one of each of the colored cars - green, red and blue - the blue beign an automatic car) Well Ford turned him down and all of the Shelbys were returned into the system (High Performacne Motors - the Shelby processing company) With this allot of odd paper work was created - Shelbys sold to Dana - Dana selling back "used" Shelbys to HPM, then the same Shelbys being resold through other dealerships.

Can't find any record of Peyton selling a single Shelby or Cobra (haven't seen any paperwork indicating he ever got Cobras)

Just though I would add a little to the story, been following for about 20yrs..... we own the Blue 66 Shelby

Does anybody else think this looks like a re-chrome? The plating to me looks much more polished than any of my NOS or original plate frames, and the lettering has a rounded off look where the edges of original characters are usually very crisp..

Steve- your notion crossed my mind too. ("It looks like jewelry") The original owner of my Chevelle took the frame off his car shortly after buying it and stored it in his house. Attached is how it looks 40 yrs later. I don't think it is nearly as brilliant even after clean up ....

This DANA license plate frame was introduced and only offered for a short period of time at DANA Chevrolet. This frame was introduced in the late 1969/early 1970 time frame. I am aware of one other that is in a collection.

This topic came up during one of my discussions with Dale. Although he left the dealership in late Dec 68, he did recall a chrome version style frame. It appeared in late 69 or the early part of 70 at DANA Chevrolet not at the Hi-Performance Center as it was already dissolved. Could not say for sure if all vehicles received this frame or if it was promotional. This plate has the Robert W. Brown insignia stamped on the back and has the casting flaws and inclusions as the earlier frames. There has been some discussion about a reproduction frame some time ago. I believe that particular frame is chrome as well but is noticeably different in appearance. I was contacted by an individual awhile back who owns such a frame. I will look for the contact information and see if I can get a picture.

One of my back burner projects has been making a repro of my original Dana frame so I have a one for the front/rear of my Corvette. I picked up another Robert W Brown frame, had a friend machine off the artwork and finally got around to (read 10 years later) making a mold with silicone mold putty and an Epoxy resin casting of the artwork.

The putty did an ok job of capturing the textured background and the Chevrolet text in the bowtie, and a little Nitro-Stan took care of the pin holes. From arm's length it's pretty hard to tell the frames apart (Original is on the bottom in the pix). “Alot of tape and a little patience make all the difference.” :)

Will update the post after I highlight the lettering in white...

Thanks for the kudos. I'm still working on the highlighting. Testors model paint dries too quickly so I ordered a pint of 1-Shot sign painter's enamel.

Joe, if you decide to make any extras (or have a prototype that didn’t quite work out), I would pay a fair price for one of those. That looks fantastic!

Thanks for bumping this thread. I completely forgot to post an update when I redid the lettering with One Shot.

The original frame is on the top in the picture. The sign painter's paint was definitely the way to go. It takes so long to dry I had a lot of problems with the paint wicking and it took a couple tries to get it right (I ended up applying the white very lightly with a foam brush).

I still need to do a little touch up work to my clone frame because of the wicking and the molding compound didn't capture all the detail of the Chevrolet lettering in the bowtie. I'm pretty happy at this point. No one is going to look this close when the frames are back on the car.

I appreciate the kudos L78M22Rag. I still have the silicone molds. Send me a PM if you'd like to work something out a couple castings.

I sent you a PM Joe. You’ve put a lot of effort into this, and it shows.
