View Full Version : SCR7 thank you

I would like to thank everyone who had a hand in helping the sYc make Supercar history. Rather showing/racing a car, helping with show duties, lending a hand to fellow drivers, whatever, WE did it. All previous records have been broken. Thursday's "meet and greet" was by far the largest gathering, in both cars and people. Friday at the track we had 45 or so cars racing, with several more on display, and nice a turnout of fans to cheer us all on. Saturday evening the banquet room was filled with over 200 folks enjoying the fine meal and the outstanding speakers. And Saturday, what can I say? Over 70 cars on display indoors with the Gateway Camaro club's outside cruise-in drawing about the same number of cars.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif to everyone. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.

Was a GREAT weekend... We're still on our way home, but already looking forward to next year... Was great to finally have a car of my own there after attending every year without one. Nice to meet so many new people and finally NO RAIN for the drags on friday. I'd definitely rate it as the best SCR yet. Thanks Tom and Rob for putting together a super Show. -Joe Barr

It really was something special again this year!
If there was anything better then the cars themselves,it was all the People around them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
As one of the race spectators,I'd like to give a HUGE Thank You to BKH-Joe Swezey-Camarojoe-Supercarkid & Rob Clary, among others, for organizing and scrambling to get Frank (Hvychev) a new working water pump installed (And painted http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ) in record time,on his Deuce in time to make the Drag race Match happen.
I wouldn't object to a 3 day long Reunion in the Future... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I want to give a big "thank you" to the Clary family for opening SCR7 to everyone that wanted to bring their cars to the track Friday. I could only stay for the one day, but next year I'll make plans to be there for the whole program. It was great. Thanks........ http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

What a great time it gets bigger and better every year. Thanks to Clary's for putting it all together. What a great group of people without them and their cars this couldn't of happened.. I met a lot of people this year I have never met before and really enjoyed it.
The best part was watching everybody race weather you turn 17's or 11's it didn't matter it was just to cool to see the cars doing what they were built to do. Thanks again see you next year.

I had fun myself so I have to give a big thanks for this eventto Tom and Rob, and all the rest of the crew that were involved in putting it on.

Dee has never been to anything like this so it was a real learning experience and she loved it. I had never shown a car at a event like this and just wish it had lasted one more day. I could have talked and met more people for at least one more day. Ed (55chev) stayed up till 3am doing just that. How many beers was that ED??

I am so excited that someone had the one thing that I was needing to go back on the white Motion car of mine, and that was a pair of the original Motion valvecovers with emblems. Now next year it will look like it did way back when it was new.

Charlie Lillard wants me to leave the paint just the way it is and just get it running with the LS-7 motor again, but I want to see it looking like new all over too. Sorry Charlie !!!. I know he had fun because he had a smile on his face everytime I saw him.

Getting to meet Franks dad, Frank sr. almost made me cry. You don't know how neat it is when I get to see a father & son enjoy something like that together. I was only 15 for a month when my father died. So big Frank, you make me proud to see you with your boy and having such a great time. I realize that there were more there also and please don't let me leave you out of the list.

To those that missed the show. Tisk Tisk!!! You just don't kow what you missed.

Wait till you see some of the pic' and you will be sorry.

We arrived home safe and sound. What a great event. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to all the people that help set this show apart from all the others. There were so many neat moments that they would be hard to list. Nick Morroco and his family getting into his old Chevelle with new owner and few friend Chris Short. The Thursday night kickoff party was IMO the best one ever. More cars and people than ever before. The Thursday Nighter is starting to become legendary. Meeting people from all points of the globe, jetting into Collinsville is just amazing. Once again Tom, Rob, Mo and their crew did a great job with an event which has no equal and will only continue to get better. New ideas will be kicked around and next year will be even better. The dinner and speakers were great Friday. I just want to say once again thanks to this special group of owners and enthusiasts. It really is like a family reunion. I heard many people tell me that their special cars will be done for next year and they cannot wait. SCR8 will no doubt be fantastic as well...BKH http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Just got the 2 trucks and 2 trailers home with the cars "SAFE & Sound" about 2 hours ago. AGAIN, it was Great to see ALL the cars and Friends, made a New Friend all the way from Sweden!! The Best was being there with "MY SON" and to see him Race down the track and had a 509 light with the SS Truck. When he raced the NOVA and at the end of the truck when we saw the Cloud of smoke I almost had a "heart attack", nothing turned out to be wrong so it maybe was just carbon?? Oh yea really lucked out by having my "Friend" Sheriff Officer when I got stopped going 85 mph on the way to the Drag Strip and only got a Friendly Warning!! Great time and Great NOVA turn out and ALL the Nova guys were really friendly and I think they have accepted me into their group. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif THANK-YOU All.

I really do think that we can call the Thursday night meet and greet an official day of the show.

When Tom and I pulled into the parking lot I told him then that this was going to be the best show ever. bkhpah and crew had things well in hand for the 1st night of the show.
There was already a very impressive display of cars lining both sides of the parking lot. And lots of happy smiling faces.

Then day 2...and wow what can you say. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif We had burnouts that could satisify even the biggest dragrace junky. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif Mix that with 110 octane fuel, big blocks on poly-glass tires, small blocks without rev limiters, friends helping friends and new faces taking some very beautiful cars down the track and it doesn't get much better than that.

And last but not least day 3. The best and easiest move in we have had so far. I don't know the head count of people in the convention center for saturday but I know it was a record. With special guests and car owners answering questions all day long it was great. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

I personally want to say that any time I needed help with anything there was always someone willing to help or offer thanks for the things being done. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

I was thinking something may have come up like that. We almost didn't make it as my mother had a stroke one week before the Reunion. We did not get there until Friday afternoon, but boy am I ever glad we came! Bill and I had a GREAT time! It was well worth the 12 hour drive http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif and every penny we spent!

THANK YOU so much Tom, Rob and all of you guys who helped them make this such an AWESOME event! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif After helping my husband run a GTO show for 11 years, I know how much work it is to put on something like this! I have attended many events over the years with hundreds (and even thousands) of cars, so this was one of the smaller events that I have been to, but it was, without a doubt, the BEST! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif (just goes to show, size does NOT matter! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

BTW...The first time I saw all the "Supercars" was when they were lined up to get into the Gateway Center Friday. Firstly, I'd like to thank all of our members and sponsors! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif Without them, NONE of this would have been possible...yeah, that's a cliche, but it's the TRUTH! You guys all continue to out-do yourselves every year, and it shows! From Imagine hauling cars & helping with the goody bags, to Berger for the CHP handouts & banner, MK Insurance for helping some of the owners at the show out on their insurance, to all the members pitching in at the drop of a hat...and so much more.

I've also gotta thank the gang from Alton that helped with the work load...Mo, Johnny, Kevin, Jared, Jon, Travis, & Otis. Dad and I owe you guys BIG TIME. From helping load/unload our cars (& others!), to working at the track, working at the Gateway Center, and lots of other chores that get unnoticed.

Also those members who pitched in at the show...BKH & the SCW gang helping get the cars in their places, Biele and Andrew for getting everyone lined out at the registration booth Friday night, Andrew for working the mic at Gateway, Jeff and Annie for taking over 1,000 pictures of the event, all of you behind the scenes guys, the Gateway Camaro Club for throwing a pretty sweet little show of their own, our guest speakers Bob McClurg, Ed Hedrick, and Warren Dernoshek, all the folks at GIR, and the list goes on and on and on.

I'm sure there are some folks I'm forgetting, it's totally unintentional and I apologize...but thanks again to EVERYONE for their help in making this THE biggest/best Supercar show on the PLANET!

The 'Pennsylvania Posse' is ALWAYS welcome in Illinois, and that includes a little Red Deuce from Pittsgrove, NJ too! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Good to see you all again. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

And a big 'Thank You' to Brian for introducing me to Jim Schild. We had a nice chat and hopefully, some good shots of the car!

Overall, a GREAT WEEK-END, as we all expected. Hell, even Belair was on his best behavior! (Or maybe just taking pity on me???) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Annie and I had a conversation last week about some of the responses and replies she has received lately. I told her there are still a few Good Guys around; some who are in this hobby truly for the sheer enjoyment of the cars, and not their own personal gains. Tom Clary, Brian Henderson, Marlin Spotts and the team they've pulled together deserve a tremendous amount of credit for furnishing a home for the best in the nation. I'm not talking cars; I mean the people. It was apparent these past few days. I hope everyone enjoyed the gathering as much as I. Hats off to the sYc and those who keep it running!!!

My sincere thanks to all who stopped by and introduced themselves. I made it to the race track this year; maybe next year I'll actually hit the starting line! All those 34 year old parts are showing their age! (Don't say it Frank; BelAir beat you to it!) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Did any of you guys see this run, when Hassett ran the Orange Nova. You got to hand it to Mark and his son, they really no how to do it. I mean, how many guys do you know that take a "6 figure", "body-off" "Super Car" and run the snot out of it. Here Mark is with a full, frame off "trailor queen", and he's out there banging through the gears. TOTALLY AWESOME!!! That could be one of the highlights of the event. None of the prior owners would dream of doing that, but that's Marks style. ***(Remember last year when he was bang shifting the L/88 Motion???)*** Even though there was some smoke puffing out, the car certainaly needed it. That run was a great photo opportunity as well. MARK, KEEP ON DRIVING THEM LIKE YOU STOLE THEM- THAT'S WHAT THEY WERE MADE TO DO!!! Who cares if it was a 15 second run, the other Nova's were in the mid 14's, certainaly not bad for the first time!!!!! By the way the Hurst Mags looked "BAD A$$" going down the track.

Appropriate credit to Mark and his Son, I was surprised to see the new addition pulling up to the starting line! However, did you happen to notice all of the other high dollar Supercars making runs? These cars were made to do this, if they break, SCW will fix 'em http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hats off to everyone who drove their cars down the track, even if they didn't initially plan on it. It's easy to get the bug once you are standing there watching everyone else do it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif It doesn't matter about your reaction time, 60', ET, or MPH. All that matters is that you have big sh1t eatin grin on your face when you pick up your timeslip.

If you want to go a little faster, there is always a friend in the pits who will show you how to pick up a tenth or two - my thanks to COPO Pete, Casey Marks, and Terry Pennington who gave me a few pointers.

The Thursday parking lot show, the drag racing, the banquet with those great speakers, and the awesome show at the convention center. Not to mention the Gateway camaro show outside, did you see that bigblock Corvette race car?

And it was cool to meet so many of the prominent members of this board. What a great event, truly one for my memory books with 360 pictures to browse through.

Thanks Tom and Rob, and everyone else who helped!

I just wanted to say thanks for all the hospitality showed to me on Friday. Being a non-bow tie, it was good to see all of the clean and neat cars making their way down the track. To the Clary clan: http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif I know that the event does not just put itself on and I must say that from what I saw, it was a tight ship run that day! My car managed to run the best time ever (yes, even in that heat!) and I managed to get some serious tuning done for the Pure Stock Drags. Rob, look forward to seeing you in about a week! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Well said, I agree. How about a "Day 2" look for your car? Lets "gitt-er" down in the mid to high 13's for next year. Headers, Cragers etc. That would rock! Sweet ride Marlin and way to run it!!!

You don't need headers and cragers to do that! 13.80's should be easy with a little work. i have gone 13.22 on E70-14's through the manifolds with single crossover. Don't give up so easy guys! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

You are right about giving up Pete, you shouldn't,but your cars are far from stock even though they look stock. Maybe the tires hurt the most. Stock for the classification maybe...but stock GM http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif Don't get me confused with the stock appearing gents. My Nova for instance has never been restored. It has been painted but that is it. Original springs on all corners, original body mounts etc etc. Stock cam from GM, stock unported heads from GM, TRW pistons, stock rods etc etc. Years of tuning, and real seat of the pants driving. My Camaro may have a few suspension mods, but we certified the motor. Stock GM cam, TRW pistons, stock rods and so on! Still a stock Deuce should be able to go mid to high 13's in it's sleep! I run the same tires as anyone else.
The pure stock guys are a unuaual breed and the only folks that have really tried to get the most out of a stock combination. The world was brainwashed right from the late 60's on from Hot Rod magazines that had to push advertisers products to sell there mags. They never ever really supertuned a car. They would make one pathetic blast down a track and then add headers, then after that set the timing and curve, then change jets etc etc, instead of sticking with it to see what it could do.
Again.... Don't give up so easy guys!

So true...but, I have found exactly 1 instance where they tinkered with a virtually stock car to see what she would/could do. It was done by SS&DI, Nov '68, and was the start of their "Project Camaro" series. Here's the run down...

Test: '68 Z/28, ordered with 4.30 posi, spoilers, M22, power disc brakes, and floor mats. Total cost: $3,686.55

- Heater assembly & AIR pump removed, due to the car being in an accident just prior to starting the project. Everything else was rebuilt as it was from the factory.
- It was given a general tune-up (points/valves checked, etc), rev box (set at 7600), set of Stewart Warner guages, and a 340hp Corvette distributor. Stock Wide Track GT Goodyears and stock exhaust manifolds are still in place...car is basically as it arrived from Chevrolet.
- car weighed 3165 with 12 gallons of fuel aboard.
- Very first run was a [email protected], which proved to be the worst ET and MPH for the car that day.
- Valves run, new set of AC43s, car cooled down..it then runs a 13.99 @106.50, then a [email protected]
- Dropped air pressure in tires to 22psi, installed Champion J6J plugs, and timing reset to 40 degrees. Made 3 more passes, best of which was a [email protected].
- Rejetted to 72/70-76 and new J63 plugs, and the car goes [email protected].
- Installed Champion HO3 plugs, replaced air cleaner, let the car cool off, then went a best of [email protected].

So, in a matter of a few hours, they managed to knock off 6 tenth just by fiddling with the car. And that's mid 13s with a pretty strong MPH, on the skinnies, and through the stock exhaust manifolds. Unfortunately, most people spend the few hours they *should be* tuning instead installing a set of headers or a bigger carb or...

I agree with the hot rod part Pete. That is the way National Dragster is set up now it seems. It really is about selling products. Computers, throttle stops, computer shifters and so on. Anything new if you need it or not.

Thats why the Pure Stock Drags are so good! Take what you have, make it "stocker", then tune and thrash. Change one thing at a time, give it a few trys. If it makes your car go faster, keep it. If not, go the other way till it does run faster. Keep on doing that till people think you're cheatin'. Pete, Rob, Rusty, see you guys at Stanton...... Rest of you out there, if you havent been there, you're missing a really good time.

I agree with you guys about thrashing your cars. But today, I think most of these guys are doing Day-2 just basically for the look not the performance. It is just a nostalgic look back at the old days, not really to enhance the performance. JMO Sam

No Day 2 for me, I'm a stocker - remember, I just took the Comp cam out and installed the GM one for racing at SCR7! So, I'm making mine even more stock, especially after watching the certified cars run the best numbers and mph of the show.
