160 entries, WOW...

A couple of cars I am anxious to see are Grumpy's '70 Prostock Camaro(owned by a sYc member)and Jungle Jim's Vega, which I believe is out of Big Daddy's museum.

I know Larsen and Jacono are going to a nearby track on Sunday for a match race, would be wicked to see several more of these cars make an appearance.

Here's a shot of Caleb Arone's bad as$ 69 COPO "Day 2" Byrne Bros. car...(it sounds as vicious as it looks btw) Shor's 69 Yenko Chevelle can be seen in the background, I accidenly deleted the close up pic of it when trying to zoom in on the photo... he brought along an awesome DVD copy of over 30 minutes of drag racing footage of the car (as well as a Yenko Vega!) shot by the previous owner's wife... I think i stood and watched the whole thing at least 3 times... very cool. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I should have went to York instead of Goodguys in Columbus. Would have been worth it to see Grumpy's toy and the straight axle Nova alone.
GG used to be about a 50/50 mix of street rods and musclecars-in cOlumbus anyway. Now it is about 95% street rods.
Mike's Camaro looks great.

Curious if the 70 Grumpys Toy is the "real deal" restored race car........or a tribute car made to look authentic
If the actual real car, how may I learn the story on the history of ownership and restoration occured????

I too would like to know more about this car. Check out the July Editions of SS&DI and Hot Rod. When did the RS/no spoiler come into play? The car was on e-bay right? What motor is in the car? An original "race day" unit? How many second generation Camaros did Grump have? Thanks.

Grumpy only had one 70 1/2...the pics are of the original car completely restored to the era when Grumpy owned and built it...I have looked at a zillion pictures from lot of magazines...the RS style front is correct...it was sold to Grumpy as a "body in white"..the gold leaf work on the sides of that car is incredible...I was fortunate to see the car in person and hear it run before it went out to York....quite a piece of history....hey Brian and Mike....since you went to York you can't come to SCR now.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I really think Grumpy's Toy should be down there on display...

I'll also never forget Ed Hedrick's story about how he'd set up the chassis on his DY Yenko Super Stocker with the help of Grump Jenkins, by doing 6,000 RPM launches while Grump watched how the tires, springs, and pinion would react. Sounds like a logical enough practice, except that the 6 grand launches were made in a 30ft garage while Grump would lay alongside the car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Ed has always said the Grump would do "whatever it takes" to win, and that he probably had more speed secrets up his sleeve than Smokey Yunick. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif to them all. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

The Grump looked the car over carefully at York. He was asked if he thought it was his old one and he said "maybe, or it could be Zul's"

Belair62
07-13-2005, 07:05 PM
It was Zuls too !The ownership history went from Grumpy thru 71...then it was leased to Bruce Larson for Pro Stock...then sold to Rich Zul...When new it had a steel straight bumper front end and as you can see it had RS bumperettes which was changed to an A&A glass RS front end. This car went thru a lot of different looks...I looked at mountains of photo history and it seems every one was a little different !

I have known about this car for some time, and was anxious to see it. Simply awesome. It was neat to be standing next to MG when Grumpy first saw it. In fact, the picture I posted of MG and Grumpy with the car was moments after Grumpy had viewed the car for the first time since being restored.

As per the car being at SCR8, Mike and I have visited aboutt his and hopefully he will bring it along with his Yenko Chevelle. Even not set up to race, it would be neat to have it at the track, maybe at the tree next to another '70 pro-stocker.

I'm curious about the appearance of the R/S "Urathane" Nose. As the Original Pieces are quite heavy to be used on a race car.....and the "nose" on the white car appears other than Original, could someone comment on what is being used for the nose piece on Grumpy's Toy resto...........

I think the front was glass as you see pics of the spoiler molded to the front. The RS nose was cast into front end also and appears smaller than the real nose. Those things are really heavy. There is a picture of Strickler,at Indy '70 cutting the front spoiler off the car with a hacksaw because Grump told him "Remove that Damn field plow and the car will go a tenth quicker." The picture is in Larry Davis' new book "Quarter Mile Muscle" which is really excellent. One question I always had about Grump's '69 is: Were the louvers on the quarters filled? If you look at pics of the car the Lakewood decal is placed over where the louvers should be with no outline of louvers showing. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Hey guys...Am i reading the same thread as you? I think Belair explained all these questions in his above post... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif the car had a non RS front end originally, and was replaced with lightweight 'glass nose, not a heavy urethane one. It went through many changes, looks and drivers over the years, as documented in photos, ads, etc...but the first driver (and coolest one) was the Grump.

ZUL also ran the Motion Ribbon car prior to it getting shipped to some island http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Grump might have been thinking of that car, which I can tell you Mike G's car IS NOT THE MOTION car!!!!!

I thought the ribbon car was driven by Dennis Ferrra and later turned into the 74 body style?
Paint scheme went ribbon, yellow then red white and blue?
I have a CC that shows Ferra still runing the car in 1975 in comp eliminator or some similar "lower" class.

JChlupsa
07-14-2005, 01:15 AM
I stand corrected It was Dennis not ZUL. Im thinking of another car here that was one of ZUL's.

The Ribbon car went Ribbon to Yellow and then to White (how it was shipped to Hawaii) before it was painted Blue and put on the street to match a twin to it. I have not seen any of the Red/White and Blue scheme for this car but have seen Bruce Larsons car painted that way.

Found this on another site.

<font color="red">
By 1970, Grumpy's very successful 1968 Camaro had seen over two years of heavy racing and was pretty much used up and no longer competitive. Chevrolet had just came out with the restyled Camaro for 1970, so 'Da Grump built one.

The big-block Camaro looked fantastic but was as inconsistent and troublesome as the Hemi Mopars were fierce. After two years, Jenkins retired the car to build his tube-framed small-block Vega. Eventually Jenkins leased the car to Bruce Larson while Bruce's Vega Pro Stocker was being build. After Larson was done with the car, Bill sold the '70 Camaro to New York racer Richie Zul.

In 2002 or 2003 the car was for sale on eBay of all places, ending the rumor that it had been stolen and dumped in the Hudson River back in the '70s. The last known incarnation of the car it had been painted all white and was used as a street racer. One thing is for sure, by now, it must be one beat up hulk of a car.

I Talked to the guy that owned the car for several years. I think his name Richard Green. About 10 years ago I was looking for a ZL-1 block had ads in ICC and other places. I got a phone call from this Green asking if I had found a block?? He was also looking for one. He tolded me he had Jenkins old 70 Pro Stock and was going to restore it. When it came for sale on E-Bay I called him it was the same guy. He told me the first time I talked to him he had paperwork from Jenkins. I tried to buy it asked him what his reserve was and it was out of my ball park.

Let's also not forget this is a born racecar. It was likely modified every weekend of it's early years.
