Frank and Barb Payne's Mac's Chev-Olds COPO Camaro:

"Our Camaro was ordered from Mac's Chev-Olds in Crete, NE by a gentleman named Phil Durst of nearby Lincoln, NE. Phil ordered the Camaro with performance in mind, checking the L72 427 engine and M40 Turbo 400. He also ordered the U69 AM radio, U57 under dash 8 track, N34 rosewood wheel and Z23 special interior group as well as specifying the Tuxedo Black exterior and standard black interior. Mac's was well know in the Eastern Nebraska area as one of the premier performance dealers. The owner, Al MacNamara, was heavily into drag racing and sponsored several cars including racing a '70 W30 442 himself. The dealership was rumored to have ordered 8 COPO's including the #22 ZL1. Not bad for a burg of 3,000 souls. When the car came in Phil was unable to take delivery because Uncle Sam had other plans for him. A friend of Phil's, Vic Keller, a parts man at another dealer, DuTeau Chevrolet, learned of the COPOs availability and stepped up to buy it. Vic had big plans for the car. Pulling the original engine he installed a NHRA legal Super Stock engine and went racing. The car held the SS/DA mph record for part of 1970. Thankfully the car was not cut up and when Vic sold the car it was returned to stock by reinstalling the original engine. After a succession of owners we were lucky enough to purchase the car in 1991 from Dave Milota who had been collecting NOS parts for the car since he bought it in 1981. Dave also had some luck when his nephew literally stumbled across the original engine which had long been separated from the car in a local machine shop waiting to be freshened to go back in a stock car. Dave at the time had the black COPO, a '71 Phase III Baldwin Motion Camaro now owned by Kevin Suydam and the #22 ZL1 from Mac's which he still owns. The restoration began in 1992 and Barb and I took the car to SCR 3 for it's debut. We made some great friends like Don and Paulette Clark and Andrew Hinckley at SCR 3 who we continue to talk to frequently. We love owning our COPO as nothing gets respect at a show like a Chevy Supercar!"

As the article above mentioned, it has been to a couple SCR's in the past, and this thing is indeed SWEET! Black is sooo sinister...and with no spoilers, and the black steelies, can you imagine, late at night, that thing rolling up to the local street race meeting back in the day? Yahtzee!!!! Now, if we could just talk Frank into a return trip to the SCR...http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Doing a 50-foot burnout.

Isn't anyone going to start a rant about the cowl tag rivets?

(Just kidding.)

Redlines look great on black, dog-dish capped cars.

Started my spring cleaning today. Attached is a local car, sold new at Jack Maxton Chevrolet. Won Best Of Show at the 1995 Len Immke Classic here in Columbus. Has been in the owners garage unseen since about '98. This car has been through about 7 owners, and back in the day was known on the streets as "King Kong". Automatic with column shifter, spoiler was added by the original owner after he bought the car. Almost as nice as the feature of the month. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Andy this is not the COPO that your son won from the comic book sweepstakes is it?

ANDY M

No, mine was sold by Berger, was originally LeMans blue, and no way in he$$ would win best of show, unless it was the only car entered.

Frank,

-----I dont know how many guys can say they had one of those Doodlebugs back in the day but I did! My dad had a red Cushman "Eagle and he got me a red Doodlebug. I dont think it was new and I have absolutely no idea what happened to it. We must have looked goofier than hell riding around together. Yours is the nicest I have ever seen by far. Where could a guy find one of those bad-boys? I think Id like to find another one..............Bill S

Bob,

It's a '47 Hiawatha "Doodle Bug". Built by Beam Manufacturing in Webster City, IA. They made them in standard and super models with Briggs or Clinton 1.5 hp engines. This one is a standard with a Briggs. I brought it home in a box full of rusty junk, it was OK though 'cause I told Barb it was her Valentines present. I guess that means its hers. The coolest thing is on the standard, the throttle and brake are on one lever. Squeeze for brake and let it go for full throttle. OSHA and lawyers love it. They bring $3 to 5 grand restored.

Bobby, The wood is the shipping pallet I made to take it to shows. The tires and tubes are NOS and they leak so bad that if I set it on the kick stand it tips over, hence the wood stand. Hers another pic of "wierd stuff". http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Yep, the kart is a '65 Bug Sprint with a MC75 engine about 1964.

I had a cart and engine just like that in about 1967. Mine had "scrub" brakes and was a chore to stop. Lucky I'm still alive, I'd run it up and down the streets of Chicago, many times with the men in blue after me.
