I have seen the Haney name on a few 1970 L-78 & LS-6 Chevelles. One in particular stands out among the rest.

I don't know when the dealership name changed but some of the same people are still there today from the Haney Garage days.

Ken is a very good guy. He's been there since the 60'! He was there when my copo car came in. ( They had two copo camaros. A hugger orange car and my daytona yellow car ). He was kind enough to write me a letter on their letterhead about my car and the name of the salesman , etc. People like Ken are generally not around anymore.

This dealer also sold a Lemans blue automatic COPO chevelle which now resides in Oak Harbour Washington.

Randy,
I was not aware of any other copo cars they had sold besides my car and a hugger orange camaro. That's good information. What else do you know about any " super cars " they have been involved with and or are around still ?

Randy K

I was told be the owner that use to own your car that they only sold the 3 copo cars.I was also told that the dealer tried to order some more copos but could not any more. I know of 4 other copos that were sold new in British Columbia, 3 chevelles and 2 camaros which includes the camaro I own. Most of these cars have gone the US.

Randy, Again real good information.

Which prior owner are you refering to ? ( I have personally spoken to the original owner Jack Euwda ).

What's new up there in BC ?

Regards, Steve

Randy K

The owner I am referring to owned both of these copo camaro's at the same time. He sold the yellow car to collector in Alberta and restored the orange car.The orange car has since been sold to the US a few years ago.

My 70 Z-28 was sold new at Mussalem. I think they sold quite a few performance cars there.
When the weather gets nice I'm taking it on its inaugural (sp?) voyage to Mussalem.

Article in local newspaper on Friday announcing that Musselum Motors was going out of business. They probably sold their property for a bucket of money and figured it was more than they would make selling cars over the next few years.

Thanks for the heads up. Yea, I just called up there to thank Ken Wind for all his information etc. and there was no answer. According to some of my documentation " Serving you since 1920 ". Sorry to see them go. Ken Wind had been there as sales manager for about forty years. Incredible and and incredible guy.

Any of you guys from this post still active here ? This car mentioned above belonged to me at one time . I've been trying to track her down off and on for the last 20 years . I always wanted to know what became of it and was pleasantly surprised to see it in Washington , then noticed the dates of this thread lol . I did however do a VIN search lately and it is still reg'd in Washington state , as of March 2015 . Anyone here know who owns it now ? I bought this car ( in 1978 ) when I turned 17 and we had a lot of great times together , great memories and would be happy to see it again ( hopefully , nicely restored ) .

Thanks !!

The car is owned by Steve Ellis in Oak Harbour Washington. It was restored about 15 years ago.

Wow thats pretty cool , glad its still alive and well . Do you know if he ever came back and got the 427 ( its original motor ) for it ?

Here it is in 78 when I owned it
And another from 78

Randy K

When Steve bought the car as a project from the previous owner, the car come with a matching number engine.I don't know if its is the original engine from the car. The original owner told Steve he damaged the original engine in the first year he had the car.

JeffGuy
08-28-2016, 01:44 AM
Yeah , the guy who bought it new from Musselum Garage had an incident with the 427 ( I believe it was an unrecoverable engine seizure ) . I'm glad he found it , last I heard that motor was still sitting in Mission BC , but this car had a LOT of rumors surrounding it , in its early years. Buck Kinney also owned it for 2 years , wonder if Steve knew that ?
When I bought it , it had a 396/350 HP in it , it was quite the engine , I never lost a single street race the entire time I owned it , and some clown previous to my ownership , put the SS396 emblem up front and a SS only one in the back. I guess trying to make it look flashy , I found it on a used car lot in the spring of 78 . It was only 9 years old when I bought it and it was mint , except for a little bad patch of chrome on the front bumper , which always irritated me ha . The last engine I had in the car was pretty healthy 427 , it ended prematurely as well , swallowed a valve due to a broken valve spring retainer . Wasn't pretty .
If you know Steve , I'd really love a couple of pictures of it the way it looks today , it would be greatly appreciated as the car really meant a lot to me , I just wish I'd known what it was back then lol . Sounds like its still having a great life . Appreciate the info , thanks man .

Jeff

ihere's some photos of my Z-28 which was purchased new from the Mussalem Garage, i found it in 1984, did a rotisserie rest on it in 1988, added options such as OEM tinted windows, rosewood wheel and 4:10s from my first Z, used JL-8 system with service package housing and 22 plate posi, GM crossram with '140 cam and real steel crossram hood (1 of 6 or so i'm told) partial exterior chrome trim and endura bumper.
i also added day two items such as MSD ignitionperiod tach and auto-meter gauges, headers, hi-perf clutch and lakewood bell housing, bistein shocks and quickor swaybar with radials give it modern handling. i have all the original pieces such as exhaust manifolds, in storage.

i also found a COPO that came from Dick Irwin chev-olds in North Vancouver, just finished the resto on that last year. it is a rally green, m22, 8 track, rear de fog car. i have added the options tinted windows,
rally wheels , 13'16 sway bar and radials on rally, endura bumper and rosewood wheel. its also day two modified with ceramic headers, MSD ignition, period tach & auto-meter gauges, hi -perf. clutch and lakewood bell housing , i still have all the stock parts to return it to stock including the XT wheels

tried to get docs and photos posted on here but couldn't

trying to get photo bucket to work, bit of a learning curve, forgot to mention a couple of options added to the COPO, a chambered exhaust system i bought NOS over the counter from Dick Irwin before. i also installed a mint untouched set of aluminum "842 heads dated early 69, the motor made 490hp on the dyno with the crane version of the stock 375hp cam.

i'm trying to upload photos but this site is not for photos, blog only i guess because its handicapped by very limited file size, maybe one photo at a time?

i bought it in 1977 from ernie i think ,in parts dept. at Dick irwin, put it on my first Z with headers and the noisy "140 off road cam and got 3 excessive noise tickets in 6 months so they got shelved and i put a transverse system back on it, then went to a set of real GM corvair turbos put on by Midas across the street, best sounding mufflers ever made imho

still can't upload photos from my mac apple type computer, this website looks unchanged from 1999 when i first came upon it, i will post them on my own company website as i can put unlimited numbers of photos on it, I will put the GM canada docs as well, probably tomorrow I also have a 428CJ Cougar Eliminator that sold new down the street from Irwins at Ritchie Lincoln Mercury, c/w Marti report and am currently restoring a 1967 GTX Hemi that has Grovier docs, it sold new in Seattle. my website is www.starlitecrane.com (http://www.starlitecrane.com)

So that explains why COPO sales were slow!
Was the white Chevelle SS396 sedan a Musallem car?

Another question, since Canadians seem to abound here. Did local Pontiac dealers sell both Beaumonts and GTO's together in the 64-69 era? In old pictures it appears they only had the Beaumonts. I recall as a little snotlicker seeing a new GTO Judge at the Victoria dealership but that was after Beaumonts were phased out. I don't recall seeing GTO's before that but I was also even younger.

You could buy a GTO from 64 - 68 in Canada, but they were pretty expensive, so they were few and far between. 69 was the last year for the Beaumont, and the first year for plentiful and affordable GTO's.
