1970 Chevelle SS-454
This vehicle was purchased three years ago next month from a local car guy who was going through a divorce. He didn’t want to sell it but we all know how that goes…

Original Cranberry Red w/Black stripe car, an original 454 car but currently a NOM car. Has the correct ’70 block in it with a huge hydraulic cam installed by the previous owner. Great torque monster which can boil the hides with the best of them, at least with the little 14” stockers…these Z-rated tires are hard to smoke. It has an M-22 tranny.

Future plans are for a little more motivation (Bill Mitchell 509 Merlin?), further suspension mods and a new, fresh dash which I have. Could completely re-paint the car if I wanted to be fanatical but it is very presentable as it sits, trust me.

Still, this car is a blast to drive and gets your attention (and the attention of everyone else ) every time I drive it. Have wanted a Red SS-454 for as long as I can remember and this one’s not leaving the stable anytime soon

Thanks,

John Lipori

That's what I thought, too! There's just something about a red SS454 Chevelle...WAY too cool.

Hey...wait until you see John's "other" car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey guys,

Thanks for the nice comments.
This car has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember...I have always wanted to own a Cranberry Red '70 SS454 so to have this one almost fall into my lap was almost unbelievable...and a local car to boot.I have tracked down two of the former owners and am trying to gather as much history on the car as I can.

The car is featured on the cover of the 2005 Muscle Cars calendar by Ron Kimball...when it was owned by the previous owner.A buddy called me last December when he got his copy and said I better check it out and sure enough...there was my car on the cover. It was a big deal for me at the time. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

To answer the question about the 3" lugs, they were custom machined from bar stock locally by a machinist we know. The first set was expensive because of the set-up and these are the 2nd set that he made. They are stainless steel and I believe they run around $300-400/set.PM me anyone needs additional info and I will try to assist.I bought these wheels/tires from a buddy who bought them for his '69 Z/28 but they wouldn't fit due to the backspace. They work well on the Chevelle though and the guys over at www.chevelle.com (http://www.chevelle.com) have been very enthusiastic about the look.I have two sets of 14' rallys (the original ones that came with the car and a new set I purchased) and while I love the look of the original wheels,my car looks like everyone else's Red SS454 when I take it to shows. For example,I showed it twice at the PG Ralley (the last 2 years) which is a support event during the Pebble Beach weekend here on the Monterey Peninsula. The first year I showed it with the rallys I didn't get much attention. The next year I showed it with the new wheels and people were all over it.It took "outstanding muscle car" out of 300+ entries so I would like to think the wheels had something to do with that. These wheels really give it a racy look and follows my vintage Trans-Am look that all my other cars have.Phil Schmidt at PSE (310 534-4477) also does period-correct race wheels and he features the longer 3" lugs as well, but not in stainless steel. To me,this car has killer stance and photographs well.

Thank you Bruce for the great writeup. He's got my '70 Z/28 coming up next and then as soon as I get my new motor installed in the '69 (550 hp/383 stroker being built as we speak),I'll send along some pictures...you guys are in for a treat because I don't think you've seen another 1969 Z/28 quite like this one.

I'll just leave that for your imagination... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Thanks again guys and happy holidays,

John

This should be a poster car for these wheels...the ride height and stance are perfect...I haven't seen a better set-up...

I've been known to have my eye caught by a '70 velle. Great looking automobile. Nice blend of modern/old school. So, what kind of HP/Trq are you looking for in your upgrade? What gears do you have in the rearend? Don't you just love the Rockcrusher whine?! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Now THAT is music!!!!!!!!

Thank you Belair62...I couldn't agree more...although I am slightly biased http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif.To me these qualities are SOOO important and I'm proud to say that all of my cars have the "correct" ride height and stance...it pains me to see cars up in the air, especially in the front and especially upon accelaration.
This car sits so perfectly,I don't want to do anything to it to upset the combination.

mockingbird812,

Currently,it has the stock 4:11 gears and yes...I love the whine of the M-22 gearbox!
Those Bill Mitchell World BB's with about 560 hp should do the trick nicely i would think http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif.
I am having Chad Golen (www.golenengineservice.com) build me a 550hp/383 stroker for my '69 Z currently so I may have him built my next motor as well.
More power and alloy heads should really wake this thing up...as if I need more power! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

John, I was referring to those great looking wheels and stance - "wheels" - "Shoes"
