This is a car that I've taken with me from San Francisco to Dayton to Austin over the last 20 years, and probably next year back to San Francisco when our son goes off to college. It truly is part of the family.

I bought it from the fourth owner in Ripon, CA in the late 80's. He also had a '65 425 hp Corvette with less than 20,000 miles, but the Chevelle had about 12,000 miles, and when I saw it I had to have it The car was meticulously cared for by all it's owners.

It was built late in the model year at the Fremont plant and sold new in Roseville, CA. It still has 3 of the 4 original tires in the trunk, plus the spare that's never been used, as well as the original black CA plates with the dealership license plate holder.

The car was delivered with Aztec Bronze Metallic paint, red line tires with mag style wheel covers, and Aztec Bronze bucket seat interior. Other factory options included L78, M21, 3.55 rear, gauges, am radio, rear speaker and tinted windshield (see picture of window sticker copy). The engine, transmission, and rear end are numbers matching, born with the car components.

The only changes from new are a partial repaint by the 3rd owner, hood insulation, hoses, belts, plugs, battery, exhaust and minor engine compartment detailing. The idler pulley still show factory orange over spray, and the interior and trunk look like it was just driven off the show room floor. Although the chassis has been cleaned a little, it shows a large dose of 40 year old patina.

The original owner in Roseville was an older guy who occasionally drove the car to Reno for a little poker action. When he'd get home he would turn on his lawn sprinkler and pull it under the car to make sure there was no dirt or dust on the undercarriage. Most of the miles were put on by the first owner.

The second owner in Woodland, CA was just out of high school when he bought it in 1970, and put less than 500 miles on the car, mainly cruising and car shows. Luckily he was a waxer, not a street racer. The third owner, also in Woodland convinced the young man to sell after a few years. He also admired it as a very unique car, but did some minor damage to the left side which required some paint work.
Around 1980 he sold the car to the 4th owner in Ripon, CA, and it truly became a trailer queen with occasional car shows and short drives. I bought the car in the late 80's, and drive it just enough to keep the juices flowing (the cars and mine ).

Mike or Paul, I don't see positraction on the window sticker. Normally, I'd just assume it's a peg leg but didn't know if the L-78 was different. Is it?

I think the original owner just didn't check the box for a posi rear end. It doesn't appear on the Window Sticker or Build Sheet and there's no sticker on the trunk lid. The code stamped on the axle housing is KJ 0209 B which I believe is for an open 3.55.

Question Paul? Do you know if anyone, yourself included, ever had the Rear Bumper Guards off the car? I ask, only b/c they are not mounted corerctly... The guard on the passenger side should be attached/mounted directly below the "SS" emblem. Just curious what you may know about that.

Lots to learn here.. the blueprints to guys like me... No Spark plug heat shields, Yes, French Locks, No SMOG, , Grill filler panel painted Argent Silver on top.. and the not often seen "Picture Frame" Style Shifter boot ( I have one too!! )

Mike,
I think if they slept together it would be a bit dangerous.....two studs in the same corral!

I've never removed the rear bumper guards, but it's possible that one of the previous owners fiddled with them. The car was a late build, 07A, if that means anything. For example, I've heard that the late cars had .940 inch front sway bars.

I think all L78's and L72's were excempt from smog in California in 1966 only. I also have a '66 Impala SS L72 with no smog....also, that one has spark plug shields.

Thanks for the observations.... any other originality "catches" would be appreciated.

Back in April of 66, one of my friends bought a L78 Chevelle from Nickey.......It was Marina Blue, Black Vinyl Top, Black Interior w/ Bench Seat, 4 Speed,Posi Car.......He added Headers, Crane Cam, and slicks.......Car ran 12.20's all day long.........You could tell the cars that had in car cam changes back then as they would notch out part of the Grill to allow for the cam swap.......
I had just gotten my L-79 Nova at the same time, when both of our cars were stock, they were perfectly matched as he couldn't pull me and vice versa....Dead Even

------Paul, if I missed the birthday of your car, I apologize but somewhere I heard that 66 L78s and L72s got smog after January 1,1966 in California. Government rules were year specific, not model-year specific??? Im not sure though. Maybe some of the other left-coasties know the answer???.......Bill S

Good Rag Tag picture! Paul has the exhaust been replaced? I am curious if it has the LONG style or more common Short style exiting behind wheels? and what the Gas tank looks like.. signs of black out vs. bare steel? I would not have thought your car would have SMOG, no surprise there, it also has the appropriate SHROUD for the radiator and not a FINGER GUARD ( as most 66 and 67 SS's should have finger Guard ) Yours having the heavy duty radiator option, got the Shroud

Here's a pic of the exhaust exit and a better view of the gas tank. I believe it's just unpainted steel with 40 years of patina.

Yes, the exhaust has been replaced with stainless steel pipes and mufflers. I understand that L78 Chevelles as well as L72 big cars did not have rear resonators, and therefore the exhaust exited right behind the rear wheels. Although I may have missunderstood your point on long vs. short exits, I assume mine is and was the "short" exit. I know on big cars a way to help determine whether it was an original L72 is the unique location of exhaust pipe hanger mounting holes in the frame. I assume that's the case with Chevelles and L78 also. Is that correct?

Paul

The short vs long style exhaust/tail pipe on 66 SS Chevelles had nothing to do with the engine size.. L-34, L35, L-78.. but did have to do with time the car was built.. The LONG VERSION had the tail pipes exiting at the Left and Rear Bumper Corners. This was the standard on 66 SS until FEB. 1, 1966 when a shorter version was authorized. This shorter version had the Tailpipes exiting behind the rear tires below the quarter panels.. and this short version was maintained and continued into the 67 Model year where all 67 Chevelles had their tail pipes exiting. (The tail pipes also had a very unique cut at the end, I like to call it a Fancy Cucumber cut) This is not to say one could not find a late 66 with Long style pipes.. as several examples have been documented beyond February 1966, but likely that was just plants using up their supplies. My DEC. 1965 66 SS has the long style. No resonators on any 66/67 SS Chevelle exhaust systems, no matter what the hp rating.

Hey Bill, thanks for the nice comments. I notice you're from North Aurora....I lived in Aurora from 1966 though 1972, my first job out of school working for IBM.

I have very fond memories of the area in that I bought my first new car, a '66 Impala SS (396 with THM), and in 1970 I walking into Ed Fanning Chevrolet and bought a new Z28 off the showroom floor.

In their indoor showroom Ed Fanning had a about a dozen LS6's, including at least one convertible and 8 or 10 Z28's. Quite a sight, still etched in my memory. Also, down the street the Dodge dealer had a red Hemi Daytona that took about 18 months to sell. That car sat outside right though the winter!

Your memory is excellent, Paul http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif Yes, I remember those dealerships well. Ed Fanning Chevy had a lot of hi-performance Chevys back in those days. They had a Citrus green 70 Z28 on the showroom floor that I wanted with a passion....payment was gonna be $140/mo. and I was convinced I couldn't swing it. Bought a new Hugger Orange 307 Nova instead, payment was $77/mo. .....and I wound up making double payments on it every month http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Both the Dodge dealer down the street and the Chrysler-Plymouth dealer across the street from Ed Fanning had winged cars sitting around for many many months. Couldn't get rid of em to save their souls. I remember the Dodge dealer also had a new 69 Hemi Super Bee still on the lot in the fall of 70 when the new 71's were out http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif It was the ugliest shade of tan you'd ever want to see http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif which I'm sure didn't help its chances of selling.

Congrats again on maintaining that bronze Chevelle in such superb condition http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

A few weeks ago I tripped over another interesting story on the Chevelle. While attending the Chicago Vettfest a member of this forum who know the car back in the early days gave me a tip on who might have fixed the minor damage on the drivers rocker panel. I've been trying to research this for some time.

Turns out the guy moved his hot rod/body shop business from California to Oregon many years ago. So I call the guy in Oregon and he remembers the car very well, and starts telling me some war stories about the car. Apparently, at a party, the third owner was doing "test runs" up and down the street demonstrating the cars power, and had a slight altercation with the ditch! Well, he fixed the damage right up and said he was very careful not to paint any more than necessary because of the original paint.

You've got to love it when neat history and folklore is uncovered on these great cars!

I agree history and folklore are really cool on these old performance cars. I really enjoy doing the research and getting to know former owners and others who knew the cars. I am planning a late winter trek back east to Chicago, Canton, OH, & Roanoke VA to visit with original owners.

Also...I don't know why you can't see the pics Scott??? They come up fine on my computer...and no, you don't have to be a paying member to see them?

Maybe it's a setting on your computer? Can you see any of the other pics on the site???

I can see all the pics on the site except the ones posted in the forums. Likely a setting on my computer. #@Q$*$# government computers!!!

Sam - most of my cars are projects - all run and drive, but not all are ready for prime time. Chevelle is in that category. Nicest car I have is my '67 Fairlane - if you have the Feb '07 issue of Car Craft, it's in the reader's rides section.
Thanks,
Scott

Scott,,,,While I am posative that Paul would be happy to show you his fine collection, you will have to go see another collection in Ft.Worth area to see the Chevelle. I can get you an invite there as easy as "apple pie" and you wont be disappointed. Your group of cars sounds great for what I think must be a relatively (to me anyway) young guy.......Bill S

Bill - Not sure I'm a "young" guy, but understand it's a relative term. I'm 38; grew up wrenching on Chevys then got away from the hobby for many years. Was a 67-69 Camaro fan growing up; had several. Had a few midyear Vettes (including a 66 425 horse 427 4 sp coupe), too. Actually picked up all of my current cars (except for my Fairlane hardtop) in the space of about 6 months while I was living in Charlottesville, VA last year. I'm not independently wealthy but ran across a few good deals that I couldn't pass up. Sold a few that I wasn't going to keep so I could afford to buy more keepers.

Paul - Thanks for the offer. Will definitely take you up on that! Would love to see that SD Catalina, too!

Bruce - thanks for sending the pics; my e mail is giving me problems now, but I should be able to open it soon.

Chris - Appreciate the pics.

BTW - you don't have to thank me for doing my job, but you're welcome!

Scott

As many of you know, Paul sold this low mile L78 Chevelle to another collector/forum member in Dallas. Paul had lost the original paperwork in the tragic Oakland fire in the early 90's that destroyed about 2,500 homes. He had copies of the window sticker and build sheet, but no original paperwork went with the car. The Chevelle was spared because it was in a warehouse away from the fire. Chris P. didn't hesitate to buy the Chevelle even though the car came with photocopies of the original paperwork, the car was so amazing that it could stand on its own. Last week during cleanup of the car, the new owner discovered another original build sheet under the front carpet and the interior trim paperwork under the rear seat. Both buyer and seller were glad that original paperwork was discovered, what a neat find. This should remind us to keep looking for that elusive paperwork, it may still exist.

Great story, Thanks Tim. As you say, the car stood on its own, but always nice to have that 'icing on the cake' http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
