I've been looking through boxes lately, and discovering old photos from the early 70's. I thought you guys might get a kick out of them.
This first one was taken in 71 or 72, and was a local drag car. I can't remember too much about it and don't know if it was a COPO car or not. But, it might be familiar to someone else on here.

Sorry. I think this is the only one I have of this car, but more are coming. I have to scan with my old computer, and then email them to myself on my new computer so I can upload them. I'll have to set up a network sometime soon. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Anyway, here's another Camaro that raced under the name "Suddenly" in the Vancouver area.

What I find so cool about this picture is the reference on the rear quarter panel to "Ed's Esso Service". I remember growing up that many of the local gas stations had their own "bad ass" car that they'd work on after hours and park put front during the day; brings back memories.

These photos are in no particular order, and I'm posting them because they need to be seen and enjoyed.
This photo is from 1983 at the racetrack in Kelowna B.C. An Anglia panel running against a Vega.

In the mid 70's, myself and some friends rented some shop space in New Westminster B.C. to work on our cars. It worked out well, because we shared large tools and could get help on heavy projects. One of the guys was named Eric, and he had an early knack for building cars that would hook up well at the strip. He was building Pro Street cars before they showed up in the magazines. He built this car for his brother in Northern B.C. It started out as an ex government car, and became this little street terror. As I remember it was a 350/Turbo 350 car with a 9" Ford rearend.

Like I said before, this is going to be a mishmash of photos.
Here is a Challenger that I laid out the graphics on in Quesnel B.C. in the early 80's. It's the only photo I have, as I often never saw the cars finished. I ran a mobile service for car dealers all over the province, striping, polishing, and other services.
This was a typical graphic of the time, so don't mock me too badly. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It wasn't the best strip for traction, but it was close to Vancouver, and was well attended. As an example, my friends Cuda ran mid 12's there, but high 11's at Mission raceway or Seattle International

This Maverick was sponsored by Car Care in North Vancouver. These cars, along with Vegas and Pintos with V8s always looked they had too much motor. Bulging hoods, and headers hanging down gave the impression that they were just crammed with motivation.

This next series of photos is from 1975 on a section of old highway between Osoyoos and Keremeos BC. A bunch of guys got together and made arrangements with local authorities to close it off a few times that summer for drag racing. Word got around and it was pretty well attended. Cars from the southern interior of BC, and a few Okanagan County, Washington cars ran there. No timing equipment at first, but a good time was had by all. I did relief flag starting duties, but mostly took photos. I did run my 4 spd W31 there for the one time it was open in 1976. It shut down after it was determined that the insurance that they had wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.
The local RCMP constable fully supported this as well. You'll see his police car in the background of a couple of the photos. (454 Biscayne http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) Of course there was an ambulance and tow truck there too.
OK, this first photo shows the mayor of Keremeos and his 65 GTO running against the local Super Value owners El Camino.

Well, back then there were no video games or things like that to tie people to sofas. I don't think there was a McDonalds within 100 miles of there either. People were just always doing things, active. I think there were only about 3 TV channels available in Keremeos at that time, just what you could pick up on an antenna.
My camera was a Pentax SP500, and I spent the money for a 200 mm lens which could have bought me a set of wheels at that time. I pretty much could go where I wanted with that camera. People looked at it and just thought, "Hello,.... photographer" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif "Let him go where he wants."
I don't have any shots of my own cars at the strip though. If I was running, I left the camera at home. Less to worry about.

Awesome pictures, thanks for sharing! Was that a public road? Do you have any matchups with Fullsize Chevys?

Yes, it was a public road, but not used a lot. There were a couple of small ranches along there, but there was other access.
I don't have any full sized Chevys in this lot of photos. I haven't gone through everything though.
It sure is bringing back memories though. I can smell that hot sagebrush right now. This place is just a couple of miles from the US/Canada border as the crow flies. North of Wenatchee Wa.

Do they still run that road at all?

StriperSS
03-25-2007, 07:28 AM
No, that ended in 1976. No one would provide insurance for racing on public roads in BC., after that.
Even though they had the support of everyone that mattered in that area.

In the photo of the Duster and the GTO, you can see the RCMP officer sitting on his police car fender. His name was Ron and he was a pretty easy going guy. He wouldn't write a ticket unless you really pushed it with him.
A good guy.

Great photos and quality. That investment in your camera really paid off. Compare the resolution 32 years later. Those wheels you would have bought would be all rusted by now anyway. By the time I got to BC in July 75 all that we had was Boundary Bay on a Saturday night. Most of the hot cars were on used car lots on Kingsway or Broadway (Ritchie,Belmont,Gladstone Etc) $99 down and $99 per month got you a 6 or 7 year old muscle car that was tired. They never told you how many months you had to pay the $99.00.
That 60 Plymouth looks like something out of a B grade movie about "dammed hotrodders".
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Paul, yes I remember Belmont and Gladstone. I learned to never pull my car onto the lot at Belmont. They'd block you in and really put the pressure on. Bunch of shysters. They did have some awesome stuff on their lot in 70 and 71. I remember being there one day and watching them unload a car carrier with used muscle cars from Ontario. There were 3 69 Biscaynes with 427's on one load. 2 blue and a red one. I wonder where they disappeared to.
I think Mission was open till about 1976 or 77, because I did run my W31 there one time in 76. After that it shut down for years, and then reopened at it's present location.

Occasionally I run across interesting photos on Flickr. This guy has some cool old photos. Note the one of a 67 Mustang at a road race course. It's a street car, but has the whole tailight taped up, as was usual back then for road races.
Another interesting shot of Mark Donohues Camaro, and a 63 Dodge drag car.

Awesome pics, John. I also have boxes full of car pictures and had the "pro" camera that allowed me "all access" back in the day. (I had a Konica back then). I have big albums from the Street Machine Nats dating back to the eary 70's that are a real hoot! (especially the pics of me and my "ultra cool" haircut!)

Every once in a while, I find myself digging through some of those boxes and reliving the memories. Guess I'm going to have to do some posting myself!

Uncanny. I printed out your pictures from the previous pages and was holding them in my hand while taking these. For some reason the mountains in the background all look different! There was an older woman jogging past who assured me that is the spot they raced and so did the guys i'd talked to running at the Osoyoos Airport. Behind the starting line the road curves south and downhill...right?

On closer inspection of the picture with the white Camaro and black ElCamino on the previous page i notice the pointed mountain is behind the others and obscured in clouds today. I couldn't find the right angle to make the hills behind the line appear correct.

By the way as a Ford guy and had to wrestle with my conscience to join a "Chevy" site but this is a good forum i've been visiting for a couple years.

The hills are pretty green this year. Normally it's just the sage brush you see, and it looks like there's a power pole where none was before. And it looks like there's a hay field there now too.

Two different cameras with different lenses that have different focal settings. The old camera drew in the background and made it look closer while the new, probably compact digital camera, makes the hills look a little farther away. Definitely the same location, photographed with different cameras/lanses/focal and field-of-view properties, taken 30 years apart. I think it's neat that the road is still there ans still the way it was back in the old days. Perhaps there should be a "reunion" drag event held there today?

There's a hayfield now where it was just sagebrush before, but otherwise unchanged.
The air is full of smoke from fires in Oregon.

TomP
09-25-2008, 06:40 AM
Sure that isn't burnout smoke still lingering? You really have the perfect angle on that first shot. The second shot looks like the photographer was further down the road and zooming in. I kind of assumed the crack in the road was the starting line area.

I think the roads been repaved a few times since then. And I didn't have any photos with me either. I just went for an aimless drive, and ended up going by there.

I went to the races in Cawston when I was 16, it was great to see the old pictures.
Do you remember a blue 427 4 speed first generation Camaro? I think it was from Rutland and he drove hard. I often wonder if that was a "special" Camaro. I know it left a lasting impression on me.
There was a 1970 blue Trans-am from Oliver that was always fast. The owner's name was Rick.
Around 1977 there were races on "Blacksage Road" near Oliver. A group from Salmon Arm called the "Shuswap Quarter Milers"(Valiant Attempt) would come down as well a Plymouth from Vernon called "Canadian Hemi Express". Later I would see these cars race in Spokane at the "AHRA Nationals"
Do you remember or better yet have pictures of these memorable cars?

"This next series of photos is from 1975 on a section of old highway between Osoyoos and Keremeos BC.
(454 Biscayne ) Of course there was an ambulance and tow truck there too."

Pete , I have a 69 Beaumont 2 Dr Post car that I am gonna make a tribute of this car.its not the darker Verdoro green that I think Conroy used in 69 v but Rally Green. I've just had most of the Logo's cut at a vinyl sign shop and hope to have them installed next week. From everything I have found out, it was one of three 1969 Conroy Cheetah cars built , that apparently we're all only 350 ci cars??? Would love more info if anybody had any, especially you BC race guys! My car currently has the 350 in it, but man oh man am I dying to, and may do it anyway,....... of dropping a 427 in it or maybe an L78 into it.
Car is in great shape, has a beautiful original stock green interior ,
The other thing I need to do is install a 68 grill or paint the front grill black like the 1968 Beaumonts had as shown in this picture. I believe they did just use a 68 grill and it also looks like the same Beaumont Script as the 68 vs the 69's
I don't have the small 350 V8 symbol for the lower qtrs or what appears to be the Chrome trim on the lower portion of the car,but other than that , I feel it's gonna be a pretty nice representation of what Conroy was doing "back in the day"...
Anyhow it's been a fun project over the summer,...and if anybody has any info whatsoever on this photo that Pete posted,...please give me a call or drop me an email

Sounds great Bob and looking forward to updates of your '69 Post car!
Do you have any pics you can share or any more shots of 68/69 Conroy Cheetahs?

What is the story on this car?
I have some info on a Quebec COPO, which I was interested in years ago.
If I believe that this is the same car, I am willing to share details via PM.

Others know more but Denis Pepin was a Hi-Performance dealer in Quebec that delivered at least one 9561 car.
Here's another pic of the car below, note the 'Iron Rat' on the hood also there's some info in this old thread...

Found a couple more photos.
This car was sold new at Edmonton Motors, and was raced for a few years. It's no longer with the original owner, but it is still in Edmonton. 69 SS427 Impala, 390 hp TH400.

I don't think Olster's car was an original copo, it has SS emblems on front fender and black rear tail panel. Probably was a BB SS car like Grump's 69 was. I got to talk to Al a few years ago before he passed and he said the car was an original copo so ?? He was part of Grump's Group assault on the upper super stock classes along with Strickler and Hedrick's Camaros. Al told me a neat story about punching a Chrysler engineer when his car was on the scales and the engineer was ranting the car had to be illegal to run that fast. The guy started opening the doors and hood. Al said I told him not to touch it, when he kept going Al said he punched him in the mouth. Super stock was serious business and the Chrysler guys were prepared to do what was necessary for upper class wins and records.

I'm not sure what it takes to "rebuild this thread", but please do! I miss the pictures!
Here is a funny little story about Super Stockers. Many of you know I own Bill Izykowski's '69 Camaro "Super Paranoia" that ran in SS/H as a brand new car. Bill's previous cars, (which won class at the Winternationals as well as many others) were 427 powered. I asked him why he didn't buy a COPO so he could run another 427 powered machine. His answer was quick, frank and totally without thought...."To stay away from Jenkins!"
Now these guys were all friends and in fact Bill studied Jenkins' '69 Camaro while race-prepping his (mine).

From the TV show Emergency.Notice the gigantic dent near the front emblem and the hockey stick stripe extends all the way down into the front valance extension panel.

That's the 1st design D90 stripe. Done that way through the end of October, 1968; possibly a bit longer.

The famous L89/auto PHR road test car L507834 [final-assembled on or about Nov 11] had the 2nd design; terminated at the fender extension. The AIM is vague on where the stripe terminates [no dimension] but the drawing depicts the 1st design.

You've reminded me there used to be a hill climb in Empire, Michigan (which after a long hiatus is once again gaining traction).

Our friend Fred Meissinger used to run an early Z with a crossram. Fred was a GM executive and was plant manager of the Adrian Manufacturing plant when he retired. Fred passed away about 10 years ago.

Fred Meissinger and car, at Empire, Michigan:

(Me - about to put a super tune on Fred's car; Dad is coming over the fence to prevent me from putting a super tune on Fred's car):

Fred's friend Denny Hall was always right behind him:

Denny was director of GM's Advanced Manufacturing Engineering when he retired. He is still living up by Houghton Lake last I knew.

I took these with one of those old Brownie box cameras.

Thank you; that is awesome. I wish my dad was still around to hear that.

Applegate is still in business and still selling Chevrolets, in the same location for 91 years.

Here's a 67 GTO that I believe this guy still owns. Check out that patterned vinyl top. I remember seeing a few cars with tops like that, but I'm guessing it was a dealer add-on, by a restyler.

Looks like all the photos are back on this thread.
As a side note, I started a new career last year in pest control, and this is my area of operation. On Friday I went to a call in Keremeos, and it turned out to be one of the racers from back then. He is now in a care home with advancing Alzhiemers. He has his memories of racing and cars though, and I promised his wife I'd send her the photos of his car in action, which I did yesterday. He still has the car, and I didn't ask what they were doing with it.
Anyway, it's the El Camino pictured.
