I bought a 69 Chevelle SS396 Post in May and I am trying to find out any history on the car. It was built in Canada and Sold new at Berger around May of 69. I was told it was special ordered Garnett Red. It was sold in the Grand Rapids area. Maybe someone out there remembers the car?

Nice 300 Chevelle SS Sedan! When you say it was "special ordered Garnet Red", are you referring to the color being a special order? Code 52 (Garnet Red) was a standard color for the '69 Chevelles. Which motor and trans does she have? Very cool. Wonder if anyone else around here likes these '69 post cars http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif .

Sam,

You`ll have to exuse my "Special friend" Jeff.... in a way every car Jeff has owned has been very Special. That`s where he came up with "Special Ordered" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Call George Zapora in Oshawa at 1-905-644-5843. If your car was built in Oshawa he can send all the shipping list information on the car for about $50. No guess work here. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Chevelle came with a 325 hp , 396 and a MC1 Muncie 3 speed. Keith , I got the info from George, very unique car. Chamfered exhaust and a 3:31 Posi. Is it true you couldnt get a 375 hp motor from Oshawa Keith?

I've never seen an L78 or LS6 out of Oshawa. Pretty sure that none were built there. Our COPO and L78 cars both came out of Baltimore. Unfortunately, I was in the old Oshawa north plant working on dies at the time. Sure would have liked to have been working in the car plant back then. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
In '69 one of the guys I worked with bought a 300 Deluxe SS396 like yours. His was blue. Good looking cars with the bright work on the pillars. Did you notice that the Canadian built Chevelles didn't have the padded front pillar pieces. Both of our Chevelles and our el Camino are US built and have the padded pieces. These 300 series cars have a lot of little oddball things about them. SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon have the basket weave material to repair the seats if they need it.

VERY Chttp://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gifhttp://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gifL...Post cars rock!!!

To clarify, the Canadian docs show Berger as the dealer the car was shipped to after Oshawa Canada production?.

I take it the original L35 and 3 Spd trans are gone...do you think or know if it's still the original rear?.

What's the deal with the special lamps option?

9566 BA
09-17-2007, 07:44 PM
Marlin
the rear tailights on a 300 deluxe are different, much thinner around the outside of the bezel, than a super sport whick are thicker and have a black inlay in them. Maybe thats tha RPO used when adding super sport options to a basic car.

Postsedan
09-17-2007, 08:01 PM
Marlin,

Jeff....is correct....the base lines 300`s got the very hard to find smaller bezels....once the SS option was ordered you got the lager thicker SS tail light bezels.

See photo....

The car on the left is a Glacier Blue 300 Deluxe Coupe....and on the right is a Dusk Blue SS Coupe.

Just a little thing but the tire pressure sticker code should be ZK8 not ZKQ. They don't show the ZL3 code either. Little mistakes creep into just about everything.

I believe those holes were for El Camino's and wagons only. Chevelles didn't get cushions on the rear crossmember.

I will have to repectfully disagree with you on the cushions missing. I asked George @GS resto who has done 5 chevelles for me and several A body buicks and they were all on there. Whats interesting on my chevelle is that they put the cushions in the body mount right past the door opening on this frame where there is normally bolts. Who knows it may have been friday and they said WTF these will work aint my car. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bill Rose
12-16-2009, 12:36 AM
I've dismantled/restored several Chevelles myself, and one 69 El Camino and none of the Chevelles had the cushions on the cross member. The El Camino did have the cross member mounts. They were used to support a load that could be put in the back of the ElCamino/Wagons. I guess it's possible that some Chevelles got them as they were heading down the line, but they weren't suppose to according to the factory assembly manual.
Here's a scan of the body mount page showing the rear cross member mounts as Wagon & Pick-up (ElCamino) only.

Thanks for the picture Bill. My Chevelle is done exactly as the assy manual says it should be without the cushions on the crossmember, and that explains why there wasnt a bolt in position #3. Thanks for the info.

69L78Post
12-16-2009, 01:24 AM
My thoughts exactly Jeff. By coincidence I was undoing my body mounts today, and was wondering were the mount bolt was for the #3 position. I evntually realized that there was none for that spot, and then - bang- this picture is posted by Bill.
By the way, I'm also doing a Garnet Red 300 deluxe post.

Wow a Berger car and made in Canada so you get all the documentation to boot.

What a beauty.

PS an earlier post mentioned no 1969 L78 cars made in Canada, I have seen records showing 201 L78 Chevelles imported and sold in Canada, both the ones I have seen were built in Baltimore.

I had assumed they were built in Canada before writing this reply but thought I should check my facts and read the GM of Canada documents before sharing BS.

Does anyone reproduce the original shifter boot that had about three folds. They were hard and thick and generally split out at the shift handle during the first winter. At least that's what happened to our cars. Pretty early on GM was replacing them with what you see here. One of those mats are rarer than hens teeth. I've never seen one and the repro we put in our car many years didn't fit the tunnel at all. It was an awful, hard plastic that wouldn't mould into shape. It didn't have the rectangular inlay sections under foot. This is one beautiful car.

9566 BA
05-21-2013, 06:56 PM
I am going to put the by berger on when someone shows me where they put one on a 69 chevelle back then. I am planning on going to the Berger show in August and hoping someone there can tell me . I am also trying to get the original owner to come and maybe he can remember where it went. It would be nice if an original 69 chevelle owner came to the show with his 69 chevelle so I could see how they were put on. I know I am dreaming!

Of the few by Berger car's I've seen, they seem to favor the driverside rear panel, regardless of model.

Thanks for thr picture Rick. I looked up an old post from the site from Dale Berger.

If I remember correctly, the "by berger" was placed on the lower left of the tail panel and the left edge of the "b" was straight up and down. This gave the emblem a slight angle upward on the right end. You have to remember that they were installed by the tech who prepped the car and were subject to some variances. In the early 80's Chevy was concerned that the screws placed through the panels and on some models, trunks, would rust and would spread. Concequently we decided to use a pressure sensitive decal instead of the metal emblems. In retrospect, I don't think our "by berger" screws rusted nearly as bad as did some of the panels!!!! Hope this helps!

I sent Doug Harrison(Original owner), who lives in Kent City MI pictures of the car now and a questionaire of a few questions about the car. I didnt see any evidence of a by Berger emblem on the rear panel and he said there wasnt one on there when he bought it. Maybe back then they asked the buyers if they wanted it on there? Also he said they put a precibed power sticker on the radiator hold down panel and one on the air cleaner. When I see him at the show I will get more answers. I have trouble remembering what happened last week much less 45 years ago but maybe seeing the car will help!

I will have more pics this weekend. Didn't expect to win anything there was a lot of nice cars there. The Camaro club that put on the show was fantastic and was very nice to me. The second owner of the car came walking up and said he had a car like that when he was 16, ever heard that, and come to find out it was his car. The show was just getting over so I let him and his wife drive it! The look on their face was priceless.

Roger Hildebrand and his wife of 39 years. They went on dates together in the Chevelle!

Good call.

Imagine the memories for the owner.

Nicely done.

My Dad was sick a few years ago, (under good control now) so I dropped off my Chevelle for him to drive for the summer, if he felt OK he would drive it to Tim Hortons and such. Boosted his spirits, and the car is a car, it has four tires for a reason. TO DRIVE, and TO HAVE FUN.

Thanks for sharing the pics. of the Berger show. That's great you let the two previous owners drive the car; what a neat experience for everybody. Not too many dealerships left with the history of Berger, where you can go to their show and see so many original dealership cars and their owners.
Beautiful car, I bet they were all excited to see you.

Hey guys sorry have not had a chance to reply. I will dig up some photos. I bought the car off ebay in December 2011 from a gentleman named Dan in Streater Illinois. Car had all new GM panels put on it a long time ago and was left in storage for many years. I have all the documents from GM Canada proving its the real deal. Car was built in Canada and shipped to the states and sold new in the states. I will post the GM doc's and photos. The car was all together when I bought it, I started disassembling the car to restore and then decided to move onto my other 69 SS and am still restoring it. I figured given how rare the post car was I would hang onto it for a while before completing it so I could gather more info and OEM parts for the car. Will keep you "Posted" !
