THE STORY BEGINS IN THE SUMMER OF 1969 WHEN DRAG RACER BOB HAMILTON HAD A PROBLEM. AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN RUNNING 1 OF THE 11 427 "CAMMER" A FX HOLMAN &amp; MOODY MUSTANGS, ALL OF THE FACTORY SUPPORT EXPERIMENTAL CLASSES HAD DRIED UP, BOB NOW FACED A DELEMA. SINCE HE NO LONGER ENJOYED THE FACTORY SUPORT HE HAD FOR SO LONG, WHAT WOULD BE HIS NEXT AUTOMOTIVE PURCHASE?

THRU BOB'S CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE RACING INDUSTRY, HE DISCOVERED THAT CHEVROLET WAS ABOUT TO RELEASE A MONSTER. 1970 WAS THE DEBUT YEAR FOR THE INFAMOUS LS6 OPTION. THE 1970 CHEVELLE WOULD PROVE TO BE THE MOST POWERFUL PRODUCTION CAR EVER BUILT.

AFTER MUCH DELIBERATION BOB ORDERED A BRIGHT RED 1970 CHEVELLE LS6 454, 450HP CAR, AND LOADED IT UP WITH ALL THE OPTIONS. IN EARLY FEBRUARY, THE CHEVELLE ARRIVED AND WAS GIVEN TO BOB'S WIFE DOROTHY AS A VALENTINE'S PRESENT. IT EVEN STATED BOB'S FEELINGS ON THE NEW JERSEY LICENSE PLATE. ILY-384 STOOD FOR "I LOVE YOU."

A SHORT YEAR LATER DOROTHY RELUCTANTLY TURNED THE CHEVELLE OVER TO BOB, SR AND BOB, JR FOR WHAT WOULD TURN INTO ONE OF THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS RACING CAREERS OF ANY CAR OF THE ERA.

THEY HAD DECIDED TO MAKE THE FAMILY GROCERY GETTER INTO A ROMPIN, STOMPIN' ALL OUT SUPER STOCK IN THE HIGHLY COMPETITIVE NHRA D-AUTOMATIC CLASS, AND BECAUSE OF THE ON GOING COLD WAR WITH THE SOVIET UNION, IT WAS DECIDED TO NAME THEIR NEW RACER "RED ALERT."

THE SUPERSTOCK RULES AT THE TIME ONLY ALLOWED FOR THE INTAKE MANIFOLD (EDELBROCK TARANTULA) AND CAM TO BE CHANGED. TO ALLOW FOR LEAKS TO BE EASILY DETECTED, BOB PAINTED THE ENGINE YELLOW. BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE TIRE SPIN DURING THE LAUNCH, WENT WITH 32/141/2 REAR SLICKS., WHICH WERE MOUNTED ON MOTORWHEEL SPYDERS, WHILE THE FRONTS WERE MOTORWHEEL FLYS. MOTORWHEEL WAS ONE OF BOB’S SPONSORS.

IN THE FRONT PASSENGER FLORRBOARD BOB ADDED TWO VACUUM PUMPS FOR THE BRAKES.

THE STRIPES WERE PAINTED BY MR. HAMMERLY FROM ALLENTOWN, PA, WHO ALSO CAME UP WITH THE SAYING FOR THE REAR OF THE CAR “THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT”, TAKEN FROM FLIP WILSON’S HIT TV SHOW.

IN 1972 THE AMERICAN MODEL TOY COMPANY (AMT) OF TROY, MICHIGAN TOOK NOTICE OF RED ALERTS SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE AND HOT GRAPHICS AND SOON RED ALERT WAS AN AMT MODEL. AMT QUICKLY HAD A SALES BONANZA AS RED ALERT ECLIPSED RACER BOBBY ALLISON'S MONTE CARLO AND WENT ON TO BECOME AMT'S ALL TIME SALES LEADER, UNTIL FINALLY SURPASSED BY THE "DUKES OF HAZARD”. SALES WERE SO GOOD THAT IN 1976 AMT RE-RELEASED RED ALERT, AND IN 1983 AMT USED RED ALERT AS THEIR 25TH ANNIVERSARY MODEL KIT, WHICH ALSO INCLUDED A VAN AND TRAILER. WHAT A DEAL. THE ORIGINAL PLASTIC MODELS ARE NOW PRIZED ADDITIONS IN MANY COLLECTIONS THE WORLD OVER. SALES OF RED ALERT SURPASSED THE 0NE MILLION MARK.

SINCE THEN THE AMT LOGO HAS BEEN ON THE FLANKS OF THE 1970 CHEVELLE DRAG RACER "RED ALERT" AND NO SPONSOR OR NAME OTHER THAN BOB HAMILTON (THE ORIGINAL OWNER) HAS ADORNED THE CAR FOR ANYWHERE NEAR THAT LENGTH OF TIME.

BOB MOVED TO FLORIDA IN 1974, WHERE HE CONTINUED TO RACE RED ALERT. RETIREMENT FOR THE RED ALERT CAME IN 1975 AFTER A LONG AND EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL CAREER. IN IT'S LAST SEASON ALONE, RED ALERT TOOK TOP STOCK ELIMINATOR 14 OUT OF 16 TIMES. THE LAST TIME BOB RAN RED ALERT HE TOOK TOP ELIMINATOR HONORS AT DESOTO MEMORIAL DRAG STRIP IN BRADENTON, FL.

AFTER A 14 YEAR REST THE MOST FAMOUS CHEVELLE IN THE WORLD REAPPEARED IN 1990 WITH A VENGENCE. THE FRONT PLATE SAYS IN ALL EVIL, WICKED, MEAN &amp; NASTY. DRIVEN BY BILL STEPHENSON ELAPSED TIMES DIPPED INTO THE LOW 10 SECOND RANGE AT OVER 130 MPHs, AS THE FRONT END REACHES FOR THE SKY ON EVERY LAUNCH.

IN 1999 THE ERTL MODEL COMPANY MADE A LIMITED PRODUCTION RUN OF 2500, AND AGAIN A FEW YEARS LATER.

OTHER THAN THE GRAPHICS THAT WERE ADDED IN 1971 THE CAR RETAINS AROUND 60% OF ITS ORIGINAL PAINT AND MOST OF ITS ORIGINAL INTERIOR. PAPERWORK INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL PROTECTO PLATE WITH BOB HAMILTON'S NAME ON IT, OWNERS MANUAL, BILL OF SALE AND ORIGINAL PICTURES.

Yep, and I believe one of our younger members has a pretty neat car from Byrne Brothers.
