Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Thank you. If possible, my plans are at least a pair of M/T valve covers, and maybe Purple Hornies.

Better replace the snubber on the RH traction bar ...

Thank you for pointing that out. Never noticed it was broken.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Cleaned up the Chevelle yesterday. This one is more fun. It's a 396/325/Powerglide car that was originally Granada Gold with a Gold interior. It was built in Atlanta. Now it's got a Edelbrock Performer 2-0 intake, a Holley 750 (vaccum secondaries), L78 heads, 10.5:1 compression, headers leading to Thrush mufflers, a TH400 with an 1800 stall converter, and has 4.56 gears in the rear. Naturally, it's insanely fun. Last summer my birthday gift to myself was to be up all night in the garage waxing it (boy did it need it).

Very nice!

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
The Chevelle was leaking gas ( I pushed it out before) but we now replaced the fuel line. It runs nicely.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Oh geez, do I see the coolant overflow can on the ground or was that one of the 'tools' you needed to do the fuel line repair ?
There is another thread going on about the youth of America not keen on these cars...... You go guy and get your friends involved too..... Youth is a enduring factor ! |

Where is this that thread, by the way?

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Small update. Because I'm spoiled,I get money for my birthday every year. Usually about $100. If I can talk my grandfather into it, said money this year will go towards a pair of Purple Hornies for the Camaro. I love the Flowmasters, but I want something a little more Day 2.

Also really crave M/T valve covers.

I believe they are talking about this thread. You have to read down a ways to get to the conversations about the younger crowd. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbt...aint-black-ls6 Kurt |
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
It's late and I'm bored, so I figured I'll let you all in on a little project Pappaw and I are going to do this summer. For Christmas in 2013, I got a Logitech Racing wheel for my Playstation. I love it and it's really fun, but I don't have a stand. I'd wanted to buy a seat/ mount setup, but Pappaw had a great idea. He has 2 66 Chevelle bucket seats in his shed (was going to put them in his 67 to replace the bench seat, but never got around to it. I like the bench seat anyway), so we're going to make our own. Imagine this with a 66 Chevelle seat. BONUS: Already replaced the plastic shifter knob the wheel came with with an old B&M T-handle Pappaw found in his garage.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-120-102/overview/ Will this fit under the SS hood on the Camaro with a 1 inch carb spacer?
|
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Crawled underneath the Camaro to look for casting numbers. Couldn't see anything thanks to being too nervous to actually get under it.
As for looking from the top, you can't see anything. |
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Time to learn how to get under it, the right way. My first lesson I can vividly remember . Had to jack up the car, get it on stands and make sure it was safe and stable. Start at the front on a creeper and head to the rear, turn around and come back to where you started. Head back to the tranny and stay ther for 5 min...this was a actual lesson at our vocational school. I did it under a 72 Camaro that was donated by GM Norwood after the strike. I was surprised by how many couldn't do it. I could have went to sleep under there...

I'll make you a deal. ..for a set of M/T s... I need a set of BBC covers for a stored engine.... Aftermarket anything...tall ones in decent shape . Trade even if you cover the shipping ..... These had breathers, you'll have to pick up another pair of breathers to coved the holes. Summit has cheapies...... |
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Have to tell Pappaw about this.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Having done a bit of research on the C427X intake (already knew it was a 70's piece, not to mention Motion used them), most people seem to run them with a 780 (or larger) carb. Is a 750 not enough for these? I have heard they flow extremely well.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Nice...but it idles WAY too smooth IMO...I'd be itching to swap out the cam!
|
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Nah, it's a high duration cam. Trust me, it lopes enough, and doesn't bog down at all.
|
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Great looking Camaro. Looks like the Hot Wheels car!

If you're looking for the "Day 2" look....the C427X in a good candidate. If you're fine with the stock look, the factory "163" intake actually works better than the C427X. I believe it was someone on here that did a comparison back in the day and the Edelbrock didn't perform as well as the factory intake. Kurt |
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
I plan on keeping the C427X purely for the Day 2 look.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
By the way, what's the best way to clean it without pulling it off the car? The grime and cruddyness ruins it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...69-lubhkbm.jpg

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
I spray carb cleaner. Maybe try Simple Green or Purple Power first and see if that will work. Just be sure to wash it off thoroughly and cover up the carburetor and anything electrical.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
I've asked my grandfather about the car's hatred of running right (loads up like there's no tomorrow, and good Lord, this thing just falls flat on its face under acceleration) for the umpteenth time, and he suggested something quite plausible: Carbon buildup. The motor doesn't look like it was ever taken apart. I know seafoam is supposed to clean it up. Wondering if I should try it.
|
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
I'd look more in the direction of tune up type stuff, ignition, and carb. I'm not sure what type of carb it is but falling on its face could well be a faulty accelerator pump from sitting.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Not that. Carb has been replaced, spark plugs replaced, cap and rotor.Still does it.
|
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Listen to Jason. Most carbs need work right out of the box. Look into it.
|
Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.
Wasn't right out of the box actually. It works brilliantly on the Chevelle. It's gotta be something else.
