big block chevy

Looking at crankshaft engine dampers and some say internal or external balance. What big blocks were internal balance, and what was external balance?

Lee Stewart 03-18-2017 08:13 PM

AFAIK 396s and 427s were internally balanced while the 454s was externally balanced

Concur....

You can tell as the externally balanced harmonic balancer has a counterweight cast into the back.

does anyone have some comparison pics to see the difference?

The one on the left is the 454 while the one on the right is the 427

Just to add concerning those pics. The crank on the left appears to be from a late model -- note the one-piece rear main seal. Earlier 454 CAN look just like the crank on the right ... markings and stroke must be verified ... TAZ

thanks guys.....

Not to question the pics but are you sure that is a 454 crank and not a newer LS crank with a reluctor ring? Maybe you posted the wrong image by accident.?...
