Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
Hi guys ! I have an engine with the number 395558 2 on the originally goldpainted block. When I google the number I see that it should be a 350 built 1968-70. But when I found the pad with the partial VIN on, it read 34E172286. 3 for Olds, 4 for 1964 or 1974 and E for Linden New Jersey. That #4 doesn´t make sense, so what is wrong here ? The numbers on the intake reads: Y 411990 B2 BM with 99 (or 66) for date. What do you think, what year is it from ? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...222304_001.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...130_191538.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...129_222350.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...130_185522.jpg |

Yea, I know it looks terrible painted like that ! Moderators, feel free to move this to the Olds-forum. Did not think of it. |
Re: Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
74, no vin on block pre 68, 64 would be a330. Intake is 73 and up smogger, see EGR boss.

Re: Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
The block should be good for any 68-70 SBO project.
What letter and or number is on the heads. (The prominent cast number at the front corner) 68-69 are #5 70 are #6 Then they get lower compression etc. |
Re: Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
Thank´s guys,
The heads got a big #8 on them and casting looks like 411 929. Could they be the original heads for a 1974 engine ? |
Re: Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
From 442.com 8 '73 - '76 350 79 411929 Smog heads. Have huge bb-sized 79cc chambers yielding poor compression ratios without extremes of compensation. Looks like I will need other heads with smaller combustion chambers to get this thing running good. |
Re: Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
For what it's worth, 442.com has a lot of mistakes, although I don't know if this is one of them.

Re: Olds 350 engine, what is it ?
Agree 442.com is not 100%.
Small block Olds castings/cores are low cost, so #5 heads would be easiest (books say 64cc's, actual 68-70cc's) and generally only cost a couple hundred bucks.... then upgrade to W31 valves:-) Ryan |
