Superior performance "The 500" steering wheel

anybody ever sucessfully taken the wood rim off of one of these steering wheels, rechromed the the wheel and then succesfully riveted the wood back on?

Wesleys White Wall Tire Cleaner removes paint and will not touch plastic. I have cleaned many a model car body with this stuff and it lifts the paint and leaves the plastic untouched.
