Stampings seem to be some type of ink as originals are always translucent looking and many restored NOR cars with heavy painted ptb stamps just do not look correct. I tried many types of products before coming up with one that gave the look and it was cheap. It's a hobby water based paint that is thin and purchased at Wallmart. Practice on a piece of sheetmetal to obtain the look your after as practice is beneficial. I found after applying the product (color) to the stamp to stamp it first on a piece of sheetmetal once and then apply to cowl so the stamping has that translucent look. That's why the practice pays off.
Here is the product used and color is pretty good compared to originals also.
