Christmas 1969. I finally got my slot car set, an Aurora Model Motoring "Golden Gate Bridge" set, and it came with the LeMans Alfa Romeo in blue and the McLaren in green. I went down to my buddy's house for a few hours after breakfast and when I got home my dad had already fully assembled the track and mounted it on a plywood sheet with 12-inch legs so it was up off the floor. He and my sisters were racing the cars and having a great time. Hours of great fun with pop and my sisters and buddies followed over the next few years. Finally sold it, intact and still mounted to the plywood table, to a co-worker in 1985. I kept the 30-ish Model Motoring and A/FX cars though and I still have them. I see the new 1/32 stuff in the hobby shops today and it's all I can do not to drop the bucks on a new setup.

Do IT! Get a 1/32 scale setup. I had AFX as a kid and picked up a Scalextric set a couple of years ago and the kids and I have a blast with it. Still have an AFX setup that I need to get up and running again.

My dad had built a couple 4' x 8' tables out of plywood, and we had an HO Scale train layout (no scenery) and an HO Scale slot car track on the same L-shaped layout. The greatest part was that we had the HO scale train crossing, which allowed the HO cars to cross. We had a little trip switch to make the scale railroad crossing lights flash. We had hours of fun, as my brothers used to race each other on the car layout, using Tyco and AFX cars, and I would control the ol' Burlington Northern, towing about 6 rail cars.

Yep, I thought I was in control driving that train. Big Chief Engineer. I'd slow way down as it passed the crossing, my brothers waiting impatiently with their 2 HO cars until the caboose finally crossed....then they resumed full throttle and their race for a few laps until my train came around again....

The fun ended when they realized a Tyco Pro brass chassis McLaren M20, and a similar Chaparral 2J, traveling at high speeds, could knock over an entire HO train at that crossing.
