Default Re: Radiator tank codes

SN is a #3015099,used on 1970 MCarlo 400/265HP LF-6 w/Auto.Trans.

1969 L-78 Chevelle w/auto. got a 3 core BR coded radiator, part #3019205.This same radiator was also used in any 1970 & 1971 Chevelle,Monte Carlo or Elcamino w/LS-3,LS-5,LS-6 engines,or optional heavy duty equipped radiator,or Air Conditioned equipped too.

The 1970 L-78 Chevelle w/TH400 got a one year only BJ coded 3 core radiator,part #3017239.
Because of the extremely low production of these,it's one of the hardest radiators & tag to find.
Other then my original,I've only seen one other. The vast majority are M/T.

The reproduction market is NOT manufacturing these tags correctly,to the original design.

Is there a difference between the embossed/stamped code on the tank and the code on the tag affixed to the tank? Where they both used or was it different on different years? I assume the correct code should be what is listed in box #45 on the build sheet (on cars with build sheets)?

Thanks - I am also trying to understand what is correct as well.

would the BR code be IA & XP tanks?

Jake
The Tag listed the tanks used to make that particular radiator..i.e. IA & XP tanks were used to make a BR radiator.
BR is also shown in box #45 of the bsheet.

Donnie
Yes,a 1969 BR used IA & XP tanks. It was the measurement of the various cores that were different amongst specific radiators.
BR used .16 Convolutions, meaning size of the cooling fins.
BJ used .18 Convolutions, meaning size of the cooling fins.

Below is the original off my '70 L-78,along with the original drain tube clip.
Notice the difference between this one & todays repops.
Also, among other noticeable differences, notice the repops do not have the 7 digit part # stamped into the bottom of them, like the originals, nor the last number indicating the month.

Donnie, I have a complete BR radiator in my parts room if you need measurements or photos of any part of it.

To answer a few PM's @ once...
In the Chevrolet family:
BC,BE,BW,BK,BO,BJ,BQ & BR radiators all shared the same Harrison IA driver side tank.

BC,BW,BK,BJ,BR shared the same Harrison XP passenger side tank with an oil cooler,(Auto.Trans.)
The 4 core PD radiator did too.(Auto.Trans.)

BE,BO,BQ, shared the same Harrison XJ passenger side tank w/o an oil cooler.(Man.Trans.)
The 4 core PA radiator did too.(Man.Trans.)

The 4 core PA & PD used IF Harrison driver side tanks.

It was the size of the cores & their cooling fins that were different among them.Other GM vehicles used these same tanks too.

Hey Rick.
What were the break downs of the codes of the small hose bracket like the one you have pictured showing AE,
Mine has an H stamped there.
Any Meaning to these letters?

Thank you Rick!

This is the great kind of information I love about this site.

So as not to hijack the thread I will PM you with another specific question about my car.
