Default 1969 Daytona Yellow RS Z/28 - The Travlin Z

I am the second owner of this car having purchased it from the original owner in October of 2001. After 12 years of proud ownership the time has come to let it go.

In July of 1968 a young man named Jerry walked into the firm of Lendrum & Hartman LTD located at 15 Flood Street in London, England and placed an order for a new 1969 Z/28 with the Rally Sport option in Daytona Yellow. Being a young married man with a limited budget Jerry knew this was something he would not be able to do again for a long time so he made sure it was equipped just the way he wanted it. His option list included deluxe interior, tinted glass, am radio, rear speaker, special instrumentation (tach/gauges), console, N34 wood grained wheel, rear window defogger, positraction rear, and one more option that caught his eye while reading through magazines, the JL8 front and rear disc brakes. All of these options are clearly indicated on the original order forms that I have. Of course this car was too early to get the JL8 option so it arrived in London with front disc only.

Jerry was an employee for the US Federal Governmnet and was working at the embassy in London when he ordered the car. During Jerry's career he was assigned to various embassies around the world and his beloved Z always went with him. The car has been to England, Turkey, Africa, Mexico City and Canada. I have pictures and documents that trace the incredible history of the car.

In addition to the ordering, shipping and travel documents I also have a very detailed maintenance log book that Jerry kept throughout his ownership. The car has 94K original miles and was disassembled in 1986 for restoration. I have all of the receipts for the tons of new GM parts Jerry bought for the car. His goal was to make his Camaro brand new again. He did not want a speck of Bondo so if a panel had so much as a ding it was called out for replacement. This car has never had rust and no panels were replaced due to rust.

About the only mechanical thing not original to the car is the short block. Jerry changed it in July of 1972 when he found out he was going to Africa and he was told there was no gas there with an octane rating high enough for his car to run. When I completed the restoration of the car I located a perfectly dated original DZ block from a Los Angeles built car (vin # by the oil filter) and I had the vin # stamped on the pad which is correct for a Norwood car. I did not disturb the vin # by the oil pad. The maintenance book clearly documents the change of the short block. Every other piece to the engine is original. All 5 AD coded wheels are original to the car. Every brake component other than pads and shoes are original.

The deluxe interior is original with the exception of the carpet (reproduction), package tray (NOS), glove box liner (NOS), AM radio (NOS), shift ball (reproduction) and window cranks (NOS). The original early production Walnut wheel is mint.

I thought code 40 was butternut yellow. Isn't daytona yellow a special paint with a code 76 on the firewall? For the record that car is beautiful an I love the story.

Thanks for the nice comments.

I figured there might be a comment on the firewall number. I have read in various places the number marked on the firewall was the paint code and I have read in other places that number had nothing to do with paint. The picture of the engine compartment below was taken in 1969 soon after the original owner took delivery. When I was putting the car back together I had the photo blown up as much as the quality of the picture would allow. The number 57 was the best I could make out. The remainder of the engine compartment was restored using the photograph including the yellow paint spilling over the edge of the cowl.

The number 76 is the correct code for Daytona Yellow and I don't believe it was a special order color.

what does the trim tag say this car left the factory as? looks like the lighter color yellow in your original picture but may have faded some from the years. Is this also a non X code car?

The car is Daytona Yellow. Code 7676. Early Norwood car so no X code.

Here are some pics of the original as-delivered invoice. Clearly delivered with Code 7676 paint. I am not sure if Jerry wanted Butternut Yellow as he never mentioned an issue about the paint color. He did mention his disappointment when it showed up without JL8. I also suspect that is what held up his order which was placed in July of 1968.

His order says 40 yellow, butternut yellow. But i don't think 40 was a full year color. Maybe it was not available when he ordered the car.
