COPO 9567

"As soon as the dealers realized the price of the COPO 9560 (ZL1), they began complaining. GM realized it would have a problem selling more 9560s, which were no-option race cars with a healthy price tag. The COPO 9567 proposal was dreamed up as a response. Vince Piggins and his GM design staff hand-built 2 of these prototypes. COPO 9567 was not an attempt to build a cheaper ZL-1 car, as the proposed price of this model was well beyond the price of a 9560, at $8581.60 for an M21 4-speed car and $8676.60 for a HD M40 equipped car. The 9567 was intended to be a more streetable car, running 11:1 CR as opposed to 12:1. Both 9567 prototypes were Tuxedo Black Rally Sports with special gold striping. While most of the 9560s were plain-jane cars, the 9567s had options like RS, gauges, spoilers, special steering wheel, racing mirrors, gold-lettered tires, etc. The location of either prototype is not known. Unfortunately for posterity, this COPO never made it to production."

Anyone recall a post here about 15 years ago when a board member (Motown) claimed to have located one of the black and gold cars in storage in Detroit?

The COPO 9567 Camaro was shown at 1970 Chevy press previews and road test events in late 1969.

Maybe since the 1970 Camaro and Corvette was running late, Chevy brought out some 1969 Camaro and Corvette hot rods they had been working on.

There was a road course and drag strip set up with clocks and the press was allowed to run the cars.

There was a ZL1 powered TH400 Corvette running 10 sec on slicks and the 9567 running on the road course and a LT1 Nova which may have been a Yenko Deuce prototype.

It is interesting that even though the press was there , there is not a lot of info and pictures of these amazing events. I talked with a guy who attended some of those events and he said all the manufactures did them and with all the different makes and new models that it was hard to recall any specifics but he said he did remember drag testing and road testing the cars.

Some coverage of the events can be found with pictures and info on the orange ZL1 Corvette drag car and the 9567 and the LT1 Nova and another ZL1 TH400 Camaro that may have been set up as a drag car.

One writer commented that he was quicker on the road course in the LT1 Nova then in the 9567 Camaro because the Camaro had excessive wheel spin exiting every corner.

I believe that Bill Mitchell had a second generation Camaro with a ZL1 engine in it. It may have been displayed at Road America June Sprints when I was there in the mid 70's.
